Most versatile autumn jacket

If your style is a bit Toast, a bit Scandi architect, a bit cliché Parisien and a teeeeny bit Claudia in the castle, what transitional/autumn jacket do you find most useful??

I have very light shacket that gets a lot of wear but I'm sat here in it bloody freezing!! I have a long cashmere/wool blend wrap coat, and Didriksons for walking etc, but I'm after something casual, I think a fairly boxy and maybe collarless shape, that will keep me warm and work with cords, jeans, barrel legs etc and maybe the odd skirt. I like neutrals and muted darkish soft colours, and would prefer to buy second-hand if poss.

Do you have a jacket that you're glad to get out at this time every year, and if so what the heck is it?!

@DoubtfulCat , there are cheaper ones around. The price is not expensive for a good quality item, given the materials and time that has gone into making it.

I do agree with you, especially as someone else has vouched for the quality. I’d rather spend money at small businesses like that than at Primark or Cos, for example.

BettyTurpinPies · 29/09/2025 14:56

i don't mind Primark. I buy things there but they are clothes that I don't expect to last long, like tights, leggings, socks and knickers. It's local and it's that or thesupermarket.
If I wanted a one-off jacket to wear for decades, I'd want a good cut, good quality, and a shape and pattern I love.

Fortuntely, I've seen what I look like in a quilted jacket, and anything reversible I've had, I've only worn it one way.

I don't understand the love for Cos.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 29/09/2025 16:56

I have a hip length, cotton jacket from East that I wear on warm autumn and spring days and a warm, navy jacket from Boden with a detachable fur collar that I wear on cold autumn days. I have a Landsend parka that can do minus temperatures for cold winter days. And an assortment of waterproofs.

Wiltingasparagusfern · 30/09/2025 06:23

Brown/tan suede seems to be big at the moment. I think this is gorgeous https://www.sezane.com/en-en/product/will-jacket/camel-suede#size-XXS

Though it feels too warm still. I’m alternating between a Burberry trench and denim shacket/jacket

GarlicPound · 30/09/2025 07:57

Oh, I do like that! I'm waiting for this to arrive, though, and am already over budget 😬

I came here looking for autumnal jacket potato recipes.

I’ll get my coat
🙈

@notnorman , jacket potatoes aren't normally discussed in Style & Beauty. Try Food/recipes.

I saw this on the main list of threads in the app - I don’t look at categories- just at what is ‘trending’

I have ordered the Roake jacket in blackberry, for those interested - apparently they are nearly out of fabric allocation for this batch. Delivery in November..

Me too 🙈

Ohhh @SpiralSister and @DoubtfulCat , I very much look forward to seeing them/hearing your reviews!! What sizes did you go for?!

Love that, but not the price tag!

SpiralSister · 01/10/2025 15:36

I went for the medium again, @Hephebe - they do come up big, but I figured with layering jumpers for autumn/winter, that would give me the most wear.

Hephebe · 01/10/2025 15:56

Thanks @SpiralSister - apologies if I've missed it, but what dress size do you normally wear? I'm a 12-14 but the M looks very wide!

OP posts:
SpiralSister · 01/10/2025 17:08

I’m a 12. It is very wide, but it hangs beautifully. I think it depends on what fit you want? The small would fit you, I’m sure, but wouldn’t be so oversized..

Mine is m too, and I’m a 14 and have been a 16. Still works beautifully.

I have collected velvet, cord and wool jackets over the years. They can look a bit “Miss Marple”, but I discovered that wearing them open over an undone down jacket or gilet gives them a surprisingly modern twist. You can even wear a “Scandi Architect” linen jacket over the thin (but warm) Uniqlo jackets 😉

I have to say I think I'm actually fine channelling Miss Marple 😁 but thank you!

I've remember that I had an excellent Vinted wool biker jacket that I gave away in a fit of generosity - that was pretty versatile and warm. Might have a look for something similar.

Do people think the Blackberry Roake is more of a burgundy than a purple? I’m tempted but it’s hard to see with that teeny sample.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 02/10/2025 08:00

Sorry for the ugly link.

Hmmm I was going to say this but it is quilted and at least partly polyester… I don’t own it but have been eyeing it up

I really like that, I know it's short but I'm only 5ft2" and coats often swamp me so maybe this would suit me.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 02/10/2025 08:46

Oh hang on, you don’t want polyester, do you?

Wool is your best bet if you want warm and somewhat waterproof. Toast do some lovely ones (I got a Toast duffel coat in a charity shop last week, I was so chuffed!) and one of my best ones I bought from Fat Face about six years ago.

I’d go for a three quarter length coat if you feel the cold. Jackets don’t really cut it for us nesh types.
