Most versatile autumn jacket

If your style is a bit Toast, a bit Scandi architect, a bit cliché Parisien and a teeeeny bit Claudia in the castle, what transitional/autumn jacket do you find most useful??

I have very light shacket that gets a lot of wear but I'm sat here in it bloody freezing!! I have a long cashmere/wool blend wrap coat, and Didriksons for walking etc, but I'm after something casual, I think a fairly boxy and maybe collarless shape, that will keep me warm and work with cords, jeans, barrel legs etc and maybe the odd skirt. I like neutrals and muted darkish soft colours, and would prefer to buy second-hand if poss.

Do you have a jacket that you're glad to get out at this time every year, and if so what the heck is it?!

I know not the point of the thread, but I found my fellow umbrella-haters. I never carry one either. Love a good coat though.

Holluschickie · 28/09/2025 11:48

I have ordered a rainhat.
I realised I have several hoodless coats- all charity shop- which I never wear in the rain.
Vera here I come!

Fanqolfo · 28/09/2025 12:15

Thank you, that's very kind.

What do you all do when it rains? I would like to look chic in boiled wool or tweed but I walk everywhere, and quilted polyester is waterproof or at least resistant! Don't like carrying a brolly.

I was thinking this too! It rains a lot where I am so lots of these suggestions are totally impractical.

My most versatile is my waxed jacket. I have this one https://www.celticandco.com/product/raglan-sleeve-waxed-jacket but it's sold out. This is the most similar on their site but I don't like it as much https://www.celticandco.com/product/waxed-cotton-utility-jacket?cat=2163&colour=59&type=1

Or this

With regards to warmth, layer a jumper under.

I have bought recently from Vinted; blue corduroy jacket, pure wool field jacket, navy thin quilted jacket and wool/cashmere long coat. Very happy with all! I am not usually so excessive but have lost three stone and nothing fits!

HelenHywater · 28/09/2025 15:56

I've bought a short cropped grey jacket from Massimo Dutti that I like. It's similar to this but greyhttps://www.massimodutti.com/gb/short-doublebreasted-wool-blend-coat-l06406957?pelement=51928945&banner=true

Other than that I mainly wear blazers at this time of year - I have a tweed one (from Mango actually which I really like), a black one and a leather one (from Me & Em) that I wear out a lot. I will retrieve from my loft a long double faced (I think that's what they're called) coat from American Vintage similar to https://www.americanvintage-store.com/gb/en/PUF17AH25-FUCH.html and I have a similar one in navy too both of which are a few years old.

I have a Rains coat for dog walking . I probably have a formal rain coat in the loft too somewhere (stored with my winter clothes) but I don't wear it as I ride my bike into work.

I'm considering this one but I fear it may be too cropped for me: https://www.stories.com/en-gb/product/floral-pattern-quilted-jacket-dark-brown-1281831001/

That's nice!

If you knew you’d get a LOT of wear from something, but you were borrowing the money for it from your savings, would you still buy it? If I order tonight I get a 20% discount which is over £30 on this item.

SpiralSister · 28/09/2025 18:48

Well, I would, but I am cheerfully feckless about these things.

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 28/09/2025 18:55

Weird Fish - macaroni jacket.
love it , ideal for autumn

Pliudev · 28/09/2025 20:17

You have described the jacket I bought in the Poetry sale earlier in the year. Boxy shape, hip length, collarless, slate brown, quilted fine cord but not bulky. I got it half price but still top end of my budget and wasn't 100% sure when it arrived but it's perfect for cooler days and I love it. None of which helps you find what you're looking for though OP. Sorry.

yeahwhatev · 28/09/2025 20:40

This is so lovely, but very expensive what it is.

I got this which is not quite as nice but similar material

Sorry here's the link - https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/en-gb/shop/bdg-dylan-corduroy-jacket

DoubtfulCat · 28/09/2025 20:58

Just saw these advertised on instagram. They look really nice- reversible, so 2 for the price of one (though you’d want two for the price!) and each one unique.

No idea of the quality though.

Great thread, although I'm shouting at my phone in frustration because I can't seem to buy anything off the white stuff website..

Holluschickie · 28/09/2025 22:05

I love this. And it has more wool than most. image pending.

I have this jacket from Roake in the blue, and it is so useful - goes with everything. Got my eye on the blackberry colour next..

Roake Studio

Those are lovely - quite kimono-ish. Two lovely ones on eBay right now, though not my colour/size, sadly ... saved a search though!

I know the woman behind this business and can absolutely vouch for the quality.

BettyTurpinPies · 29/09/2025 13:40

@DoubtfulCat , there are cheaper ones around. The price is not expensive for a good quality item, given the materials and time that has gone into making it.
