Most versatile autumn jacket

If your style is a bit Toast, a bit Scandi architect, a bit cliché Parisien and a teeeeny bit Claudia in the castle, what transitional/autumn jacket do you find most useful??

I have very light shacket that gets a lot of wear but I'm sat here in it bloody freezing!! I have a long cashmere/wool blend wrap coat, and Didriksons for walking etc, but I'm after something casual, I think a fairly boxy and maybe collarless shape, that will keep me warm and work with cords, jeans, barrel legs etc and maybe the odd skirt. I like neutrals and muted darkish soft colours, and would prefer to buy second-hand if poss.

Do you have a jacket that you're glad to get out at this time every year, and if so what the heck is it?!

I have a Cos one from last year in a sort of oatmeal colour that’s a bit like this one. Very versatile.

@Hephebe

completely off topic but TiL "nesh" (had to google) thanks.

Hope you find something cosy 😊

Aghh so many great ideas, thanks all!!

I do like the Cos boiled wool ones, especially the one with the integral scarf, and I LOVE the Roake jacket - I have something very similar from a French market in navy and I love it. It's a tad light but can be layered, although its sleeves are sort of bracelet length so not great for winter.

Also really like the navy cord Poetry one shared above - thanks again to everyone.

What do you all do when it rains? I would like to look chic in boiled wool or tweed but I walk everywhere, and quilted polyester is waterproof or at least resistant! Don't like carrying a brolly.

Lanzaroteorgrotty · 28/09/2025 05:09

Great thread! I fancy that Roake one too. What colour is the blackberry do you think? I can’t see a proper picture of it..

I'm not normally a fan of quilted jackets but I quite like this from Wardrobe 44 (British company). Reversible so could be pretty useful ----

I have a saint james brown wool jacket I picked up in a charity shop, it’s very warm . I do live far South though. How cold is it where you are OP? My other favourite jacket I picked up from Vinted is by Joules , tweed style but it’s cotton. I’d love it more if it was Harris tweed, it’s very traitor’s style.

I have this tweed jacket from Jack Murphy for autumn, don’t know if something this style would work? I wear it with jeans, cords, work trousers. I believe the style is called a field jacket (I picked mine up in a charity shop for the bargain price of £8, so not 100% sure).

Gorgeous. I just had a look at their website. You definitely did well there!

I have a jacket very similar to this one, but in navy blue. I bought it at an M and S outlet for £20 and have worn it so much that cost per wear is pennies. I CBA with umbrellas either and often don't carry a handbag. Having inside pockets and zipped outer pockets as well as it being showerproof has made this such a practical jacket to own.

I didn’t buy the ubiquitous Khaki bomber jacket when it blew up a couple of years ago so I’ve picked up one of those on Vinted for buttons practically and am really happy with it. Looks great with merino knit or equally buttoned up shirt.

I have a Finisterre Skybird raincoat that I wear over the top. I bought oversized partly because it was on Vinted and choice was limited, and partly so that it would fit over my autumn jacket and jumpers.

I also walk most places and detest umbrellas and I find proper wool tweed - eg Harris Tweed - is pretty water resistant in a shower. (It probably helps that I’m not bothered about wet hair.) I don’t know if a wool/synthetic mix would work as well.

In case I’m caught in a downpour, I carry a wax cotton hat that folds up in my bag. Yes it has a bit of a Vera vibe but I reckon everyone’s too busy trying to get out of the rain to notice or care. I’ve also got a large wax cotton headscarf that I like better than the hat but isn’t quite as effective.

The Roake isn’t bracelet length on me, but then I’m wearing it oversized. I’m a 12 now, and the medium is big!

Edited to say I now realise that you are talking about your current jacket, not the Roake one! 😂

It’s a v deep berry colour - if you click to the fabric swatch page on the listing, it’s there. Agree that it’s quite annoying not to see a model wearing it, but then they haven’t actually made any yet!

Floisme · 28/09/2025 08:29

I also wear a knee length leather coat a lot at this time of year.

All good suggestions. I also have a packaway I could carry. I think boiled wool is at least water resistant but a wool synthetic mix is not. Proper Harris tweed is very expensive, I see. Going to hit the charity shops! I don't mind a Vera hat.

My lifestyle is really the enemy of chic. I am in London, walk everywhere or take an often very hot and stuffy Tube where I have to disrobe, as it were. The Tube hates brollies. But all the jackets linked are so gorgeous I must try to give up my Uniqlo ultra light. It is so practical though!

dudsville · 28/09/2025 08:39

Is any jacket so versatile? Unless your style is quite streamlined, for example a person who always wears one kind of outfit and colour can have one jacket, then I think it's handy to have a few, if budget allows. Over the years I've collected a good range of toast jackets and coats from sales and vinted.

Floisme · 28/09/2025 08:42

All my Harris Tweed, except for one jacket, is from charity shops, vintage shops / fairs and weigh n’ pay sales. I’m not a Vinted fan but there are usually options there too.

I carry a very lightweight waterproof which folds up small and fits into pretty much any handbag

Haha. You have just described me. If I can get away with not having to carry stuff - umbrella, handbag I will.

I have a beautiful oxblood leather jacket, but it doesn't look right in summer and it is too cold in winter (and the pockets aren't very big so I need to carry a bag).

DollyBantry · 28/09/2025 10:07

The Free People Aura Liner coat is gorgeous, especially in green, but it is very short - particularly at the back.

I was very brave and ventured into their store to try it on and unfortunately it did not work on my body shape (short legs and curvy)

It looked fabulous on DD (14) 😫

Appreciate all the inspiration here, thank you!

I'm really sorry I can't reply individually/quote usernames but:

  • I'm not expecting to find a jacket that does for every single occasion and yes I do have a few! Just interested to see what people find gets the most wear at this time of year.
  • Re rain - I usually wear hooded coats and jackets as I hate getting my hair wet (curly) but I find there's sometimes a month or two around this time of year when I can get away with a hoodless jacket plus a brolly/good planning, but I also have a foldaway (rather unflattering) rainhat with a wired brim that gets a bit of use.
  • Tweed - I like a bit of herringbone/textured woven, but for some reason I generally shy away from checks.
  • Charity shops near me are not rich pickings but I love Vinted. I could make a trip to more fertile charity shop ground, if I could get myself organised...
