@ScottishMouse If the velvet dress makes you feel great (sounds like it does tbh!) and it’s within your budget I would go for that on the basis that there’s something immensely soothing about having such a dress that you know works perfectly for the few occasions each year that you need it. I’m quite tempted to buy it in the sale and know I have Christmas party dressing sorted for the foreseeable. I love dresses because there’s no further thinking required. I have a pair of sparkly ankle boots that I wear to c. 2 Xmas parties per year, I must have had them over 10 years and expect to have them forever, because they always work.

IlovePond · 12/12/2025 17:41

I agree @Saurus72 - I have a pair of sparkly black shoes - horrendously expensive even in the sale - but once or twice a year, at Xmas, out they come and make me happy!

The velvet sounds lovely @ScottishMouse and doesn’t ‘date’ and you could always wear it more often, ‘dressed down’ with a jumper over the top!

It is gorgeous @Saurus72 but now that you have mentioned shoes, I realise I have none suitable. I literally own a pair of Blundstones, a pair of Birkenstocks, and a couple of pairs of trainers. I have a lot of foot issues, and never have to get dressed up, so now this is an issue! I hadn’t even thought about shoes 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

IlovePond · 12/12/2025 17:42

@ScottishMouse - I think wearing it with boots would make a ‘statement’!

OP posts:
ScottishMouse · 12/12/2025 17:43

Manky dirty ten year old Blundstones though @IlovePond ??

IlovePond · 12/12/2025 17:45

Mmm @ScottishMouse - I see your point 😹 I guess you could go for a new pair of boots that you would definitely get some wear out of year round. Or look for a ‘cheap’ but sparkly pair of shoes that you could wear just with this dress for your do?

Shoe shopping is so stressful for me (hence the 10 year old Blundstones!) - I have wide feet with flat arches that require support, plus peripheral neuropathy and surgical nerve damage which causes a lot of pain. I would like to be in just socks all the time if possible. I always forget that one has to finish an outfit with footwear, because I have never been a shoe person, and never get more dressed up than Birkenstocks/Blundstones suit. I know that nobody will even care or notice what I am wearing - why do we let this sort of thing become such a stress? Plus I’d really rather spend my money on the lovely waxed coat instead of having to fork out for things I will wear so occasionally - but of course this is why I have the problem in the first place.

Saurus72 · 12/12/2025 19:03

I hate shoe shopping too - high stakes and very hassley. I wonder if you could wear something like these with the dress? Pretty nondescript but very comfy. I have patent ones from last year and I can walk 20k steps in them. Plenty of room for insoles. I have fussy diabetic feet so there’s lots that don’t work for me. These do.

ScottishMouse · 12/12/2025 19:19

Well this is weird, almost like I caused it to happen by moaning….the event has been postponed, I just got a message this very minute! It won’t happen until Feb now, so I can forget about finding something to wear until sale time…yay! I almost feel like I have saved money…what to spend it on?! 🤣

Primrosespaw · 12/12/2025 21:12

@ScottishMouse due to a bad back and hip, i have to be careful with shoes and also live in Blundstones. I have recently ventured in to Birkenstock Santa Clarita velvet Mary Janes and have bought the olive velvet slippers from Toast, which seem to be actual shoes. Both have a nice dressy vibe without the discomfort.

ScottishMouse · 12/12/2025 21:16

I like those velvet “slippers” @Primrosespaw but reviews and info suggest they run small and narrow, which would never work for me. How do you find the sizing?

Primrosespaw · 12/12/2025 21:19

@ScottishMouse i sized up and they are fine. I have pretty wide feet. They are very pretty. I had to size up with the velvet Birks too and added an insole.

ScottishMouse · 12/12/2025 21:20

Thanks @Primrosespaw they are worth a try if they have them in store next time I am there.

LunaTheCat · 13/12/2025 04:51

ScottishMouse what about treating yourself to some birkies clogs and wearing really fancy sparkly socks ?

triggers34 · 13/12/2025 09:36

I am so tempted by the wax cotton coat , I fear it will sell out . I’ve also discovered love and Squalor based in Glasgow . They had a really reasonable priced oil cloth coat now sold out but I will share a photo . I’m wondering if they’ll make more …

That’s beautiful @triggers34 Imve never heard of Love & Squalor, going to look them up now.

faustina · 13/12/2025 13:37

@ScottishMouse I've never bought from these people but have had them on my instagram since they started. They're based in Edinburgh and have more velvet shoes than you could ever want. Maybe something there for you?

Has anyone tried on the brown solvair loafers? Tempted.

ScottishMouse · 13/12/2025 14:19

Ooh intriguing @faustina , thank you! I am in Edinburgh but have never heard of this company. I will take a look later.

ShanghaiDiva · 13/12/2025 16:16

Long time lurker, but first time posting- will be in Bath tomorrow and then Kilver Court on Monday so lots of time to check out knitwear, accessories and also saw a blouse online that requires further investigation.
love the knitted wool bandanas, but couldn’t really justify £59 so Dd is making me one for Christmas. 🤶

IlovePond · 13/12/2025 16:21

Have fun @ShanghaiDiva - the Bath shop has the permanent swap rail too if you have any Toast items to exchange.

Do post a pic of your DD’s bandana when it’s done - I wish my knitting was better!

Pattern is slightly different and it needs blocking (no idea what that is!). Rather brilliantly she is making me another in navy!

Has anyone got the raglan style coat? .
I have fallen in love with it but at £600, I need reassurance that it is a worthwhile investment. Thank you

Wowserme · 13/12/2025 20:49

This style. 😊
