@oddandelsewhere can you advise what kind of sturdy plastic bags you use for coats in the summer?
Also interested to hear more about the toast padded coat from last year. Why don’t you wear it much? It’s obviously not the same exactly, but I really like this year’s green padded wrap one, and had wondered if that would be a safer bet with the moths.

oddandelsewhere · 01/12/2025 12:50

@ScottishMouse the bags I use are from Lakeland, they come inside sort of fabric-y storage bag/boxes for in your wardrobe, and you can use a vacuum cleaner to compress them but I don't I just close them up because of not wanting too many creases.

The black coat I think has me issues rather than coat issues. It's very thick, and very rigid (but I've never owned a padded coat before, that might be just the way they are) and I feel a bit trapped in it. The sleeves are also very wide, like a kimono, and I find them annoying. I usually wear much softer costs that you can gather about yourself, or a thin soft jacket with a large wrap on top. I keep the black coat in the car, it would be warm as a sort of quilt if I were waiting for the AA or a snowplough or something in the winter!

faustina · 01/12/2025 13:54

@oddandelsewhere - I really like your Oska boiled wool coat. I have one by Eileen Fisher for pretty much the same reasons as you and now she's closed or closing, I think I will hunt down one from Osaka when mine dies

I copied a Guardian tip one year and stored my big puffer coat in a vacuum bag. It was very safe and much reduced in size, but totally horrible when I got it out the following winter. Won't be doing that again in a hurry!

ScottishMouse · 01/12/2025 16:49

Thanks @oddandelsewhere. I just popped to Toast on my lunch break to try three coats - the navy long wool one, the navy short peacoat kind of one, and the green padded one. I have worn a giant black puffer coat for years, but the green padded one felt like just too much coat - thick and heavy and very very warm. The shorter navy one is lovely, but I think the fabric will not wear well, the one on the shop floor was already looking a little scruffy. The long navy coat is beautiful, but I don’t think it was stand out enough for me to justify the cost or the moth stress. It has made me realise that a wool coat is probably not a good investment at this point in my life. I feel a ubiquitous puffer purchase coming on.

Morning all.

I have a question about the Angela Harding advent calendar. I cannot work out where the two small tabs on the fold over cardboard bit at the bottom are supposed to go. It won’t stay up/open properly so I am obviously doing something wrong.

Any ideas before I get the paper clips or blu-tac out?

Thanks

I’ve answered my own question. In the bright sunshine of today I could see a couple of indentations on the side which were supposed to be perforated but weren’t done fully. By dint of poking through the cardboard I have got the tabs in place and it looks SOO much better!

Hi. Is anyone going to the Toast market this weekend? I’ve never been and am wondering if it’s worth the long and arduous trek to get there.

Hi @IlovePond I went to the ones at Coal Drops Yard a few times and being very honest I wouldn't make a special trip. It wasn't that it was awful, just that really it was mostly just a very limited selection of what was online. Mainly accessories and homeware. The only time I can recall there being more is when some of the Makers were there - Emma Aitchison was there with lots more of her jewellery than Toast has ever stocked for example. If there are other places to visit nearby though, then the trip may be worth it. I like Coal Drops Yard so when it's been there, it's been no hardship! Not sure where it is this year?

IlovePond · 03/12/2025 18:59

Ah, thanks @AmethystMoonShine it’s in Shoreditch this year. It looks like some of the makers might be there this year. DSis wants to go - it’s not exactly local for me 🙀🙀🙀but if it’s not raining I may make the two hour trek…

We were at the one in Coal Drops yard in 2023 and it was as @AmethystMoonShine says. Some nice jewellery though.
The one in Shoreditch is handy for Toast Redchurch Street and you could walk over to Columbia Road ( if the market is on on a Sunday) and get some amazing trees/flowers etc. Also within walking distance of Spitalfields market.
Unfortunately we were there this weekend past for I would certainly have gone had it been on.

IlovePond · 03/12/2025 19:28

Thanks @Countmeout

Some lovely if rather expensive newness today.

Yorkshirelass04 · 04/12/2025 19:43

Anyone know when the sale starts? I'm growing impatient!

faustina · 04/12/2025 19:53

Countmeout · 04/12/2025 15:55

Some lovely if rather expensive newness today.

Yes! All the striped jumpers, especially the red one

ScottishMouse · 04/12/2025 20:53

Love the Donegal striped short sleeve jumper in black/oatmeal, lovely shape.

mizu · 04/12/2025 20:59

Oh that stripe Donegal short sleeve jumper is gorgeous.

IlovePond · 04/12/2025 22:45

@Yorkshirelass04 - the sale usually starts as soon as the last post has gone for Xmas. My money is on the sale starting on the evening of Tuesday 23/12.

The new drop; yes!
I find it so much more interesting than the previous two . I still don’t understand this system of drip feeding ,but no doubt it brings in more sales by keeping us in a permanent state of curiosity!

ScottishMouse · 05/12/2025 13:43

I can confirm new drop is gorgeous. Went to buy some gifts this morning, and had to have a little try on too. Love the brown wax coat, thought thankfully the sizing was not quite right for me. The white shirt with the covered buttons and the striped donegal sweater may have come home with me. I would also love the black Kate Sheridan origami tote (although despite the description saying so, it doesn’t have any poppers of way to close it), and the cotton mohair sweater in golden honey, but they might need to wait.

MiracleToast · 05/12/2025 13:58

Please can you share the sizing info @ScottishMouse of the wax cotton coat? It is my dream coat!

faustina · 05/12/2025 14:30

@ScottishMouse - I've been looking at the tote. Is the folding part just for decoration, and it's otherwise like the normal totes she does? It looks more rigid in the pics somehow. Also loved the waxed cotton coat!

ScottishMouse · 05/12/2025 15:45

@MiracleToast it is the same style as the vibrant check raglan wool coat - it’s called Frankie. For me raglan sleeves mean I need to size up to get enough ease on the arms and shoulders, but sadly for me that meant I was between sizes. It’s so beautiful!

ScottishMouse · 05/12/2025 15:46

Yes @faustina, the folding bit is just for declaration. The fabric is more rigid than her other waxed totes, and overall I would say it is a bit smaller - not as long from top to bottom. It looks like a great alternative to the manky free tote bags I seem to always be carrying!

MiracleToast · 05/12/2025 16:14

Okay good to know @ScottishMouse and even better that it is as beautiful in person! Thank you and hope you enjoy your new purchases x

IlovePond · 05/12/2025 17:26

Hi, I went to the Toast market today in Shoreditch. I got recognised on the door by one of the lovely Toast staff members I saw at a few events last year - which was nice. Evie was there too.

It was very pleasant, and a good opportunity to talk to some of the makers. I was tempted by a few things and almost bought a Toast boiled wool green scarf, but restrained myself.

I don’t think I would necessarily trek up there again, but it was interesting to see what was on offer.

I also visited the Toast shop but there was virtually nothing in there and the upstairs area was closed. There was a lot of stock up there the last time I went, so I don’t know if it’s closure is a permanent thing, or just because some staff were at the event round the corner.
