Really enjoying the coat talk :) I don’t have many @ScottishMouse and I remember seeing an account on IG that went viral based on her first post applauding/celebrating herself over just having a single coat. She was partly making a point against the influencers on there who seem to wear a coat (or outfit) once and then never again (like what you referred to). I really think if a single (or very few) coats work for you and your lifestyle (exactly @faustina) then that’s exactly what you should do.

I do enjoy coats that are the outfit, if that makes sense. But mainly because the clothes I wear are quite plain (boring :) ).

CakeAndJazz · 24/11/2025 20:20

@IlovePond I have my eye on a few bits, including the charcoal oversized sweater and knitted trousers that have a bit of cashmere in. I would love to wear it as a co-ord. Also the Hereu loafers and Il Bisonte bag (swoon!), but am doubting any of it would be in the sale so soon. And then quite a few home items, like some bedding and a quilt.

mizu · 24/11/2025 20:22

I’d like the patch pocket denim dress (another denim dress!!) but doubt it’ll go into the sale as it’s quite a staple. I’ve tried on so I know my size!

CakeAndJazz · 24/11/2025 20:46

@mizu do you have the a line denim tunic dress by any chance, or tried it? I don’t have any denim dresses but this style looks really lovely (and very useful).

IlovePond · 25/11/2025 02:13

I like that jumper too @CakeAndJazz

OP posts:
mizu · 25/11/2025 06:27

@CakeAndJazz I’m afraid I don’t and I haven’t tried it either but it looks like a lovely throw on easy to wear dress.

hicat · 25/11/2025 08:03

eek thanks to all these coat conversations I just bought a second hand Viyella camel coat from vinted hah. I bought a jaeger one from a charity shop years ago and loved it but wore it to tatters. To be fair it was only £5 so if it doesn’t fit I can donate! Maybe it’ll spend 3 days in the freezer upon arrival to kill any potential moths… if I can fit it in.

Calling all Toast knitters!

Someone has designed a poncho pattern on Ravelry that is based cough cough on a certain poncho!!
It's free !
Have downloaded and printed pdq before it is spotted ...

I bought knitting needles with the aim to learn. How I wish I had the skills! I’m planning on trying to copy the gorgeous red and white stocking as a wee project. I made a quilted pillow case one year based on a toast one! Obvs not as lovely but fun!

Zeusrules · 25/11/2025 08:22

I too am loving all the coat chat but am not going to count mine! I bought a Lavenham long padded coat in a charity shop yesterday and a green and navy checked Toast coat on Vinted earlier this month. Hoping nothing in the sale catches my eye as I got a pair of the denim culottes with my 20% discount and feel I need to prioritise getting some Christmas presents.

BankfieldForever · 26/11/2025 17:27

I love coats (due to the fact that I only had my sister’s cast off green anorak when I was a child - I was a tiny little girl and she was an adult size 18). It was fine but luxury to me now is coats.

At present I have six Cabbages and Roses coats, one Toast wool cocoon coat in green herringbone, a barbour ‘snorkel’, a flourescent riding jacket, a Harris tweed car coat and a new long black puffa from M&S - but that’s going back because its just not me. I wanted to try it because I wondered what everyone sees in them, they’re completely ubiquitous in my town.

I live on the North coast of Scotland. Its absolutely baltic here atm.

IlovePond · 26/11/2025 21:26

My blue Japanese wristwarmers finally arrived. They are lovely!

OP posts:
BankfieldForever · 26/11/2025 21:33

I love wristwarmers, @IlovePond - enjoy!

Has anyone tried the horrendously expensive cream cotton silk Kantha stitch top?

I haven’t had a toast purchase since the summer sale and I keep thinking about it - I’m asking here as a couple of the reviews mention sizing down due to its stiffness. I’m normally a medium and quite like oversized but I don’t want to look like I’m wearing a cardboard box!

IlovePond · 26/11/2025 21:38

Thanks @BankfieldForever - that’s a nice top. I tried on something similar at a sample sale and that one wasn’t particularly stiff.

Morning all. I am getting into the Xmas spirit by getting my Toast Xmas Day cracker out for display under the tree, plus a furoshiki box. (You may remember I am doling these out on the instalment plan!)

I am looking forward to festooning the Pond tree with a mixture of tasteful Toast, cheesy kitsch and ancient family decs later on today!

I’m doing our decorations today too. My daughter is beginning her apprenticeship as my helper 😆🎄

Sorry, I instigated the coat discussion last week or so and then vanished. Life has been a bit nuts here.
I still have not invested in a coat. Can’t believe I have made it to December in Scotland without a winter coat. I am eyeing up a functional, but not very exciting, black puffer in Finisterre. But I would really love a great wool coat. I haven’t had one in many years because…MOTHS! We have a bit of an issue, which I am mostly on top of, but cannot be certain there aren’t still some about. I have all my knitwear in sealable bags, but what does one do with a coat - both in winter when wearing it most days and in spring/summer when it needs to be stored away? Those coat/suit garment bags that hang are no good as there is a huge gap for them to get in, but I also don’t want to vacuum bag a good coat. Anyone have tips, or do I need to abandon the dream?

oddandelsewhere · 01/12/2025 09:25

I have name changed but I used to be a regular on here.

I too worry about moths, they were a problem when we first moved here but 10 years in we seem to have got on top of them.

I wear OSKA boiled wool coats and jackets, and I keep them out, on pegs or in wardrobes in the winter when I wear them and when moths don't seem to be a problem, then deep freeze them in bags before I put them away in sturdy plastic bags for the summer. A dry clean in October gets rid of creases and they look like new again. ( I think the oldest one is about 12!)

oddandelsewhere · 01/12/2025 09:26

Just realised I haven't done the name change yet!! I blame Christmas.

PeonyBlush10 · 01/12/2025 09:45

@oddandelsewhere thanks for the moth advice, it’s been really bad in my house this
summer - lots of under the bed activity with big holes in the carpet, after years of no problems - I think due in part to the long hot summer we had in the south. I looked at the OSKA longline boiled wool coats online and was really tempted but I haven’t seen one in real life yet. What do you like about them so much ? Any feedback appreciated.

OftenOrange · 01/12/2025 10:02

@ScottishMouse I think you should get that lovely wool coat of your dreams ,coats are such hard working items in our wardrobes here in uk.
I do hear you re moths ,they are endemic here in London , but with sufficient vigilance you can definitely win the fight for special items.
I follow much the same system as @oddandelsewhere now and haven’t had moth attack in my newer coats yet.

I found a tiny hole in my favourite fine wool tencel top from Toast which I’ve been wearing on repeat recently, in the front of course. I had planned to buy another but now am not sure because the fabric is obviously delicate and snags , or worse is moth caviar!

PeonyBlush10 · 01/12/2025 11:17

@ScottishMouse I agree with @OftenOrange - coats are important in the Uk and a good investment potentially, an item worth splurging on perhaps. I’ve just sold a coat I’ve enjoyed wearing for over a decade, I now need a larger and longer coat so it’s being replaced. The coat I’ve sold still has plenty of wear left but it’s wool blend (low wool content), so perhaps that’s why it’s been unscathed by moths for so long but the downside is it’s not so warm as a coat with a higher % of wool. I love my new wool coat and will have no problem wearing it on repeat just like the last one, it’s long and roomy enough for lots of layers underneath. I just add a scarf and no one can see what I’m wearing, great for the days when I’m lacking clothing inspiration. Hoping it will last me for years and as with my knits I will do my best with moth prevention measures🤞 At the moment the advantages of a wool coat outweigh the potential disadvantages, but I may change my mind if I get a dreaded moth attack.

oddandelsewhere · 01/12/2025 11:28

@PeonyBlush10 I think I love the OSKA boiled wool mostly because it's oversized and has a bit of 'give ' in it, I'm phobic about tight things. I also love their trousers because they all have elastic back waists. They are really expensive though, so you have to be the sort of person who doesn't mind keeping clothes for a long time. They last forever. I suit their slightly casual look better than the Toast wool coats which are more formal and, because I am about 196, they make me look like Miss Marple

The main caveat is that they are warm but not wndproof! If I still had to stand at Edinburgh bus stops I probably wouldn't be so keen, but here at the back of beyond I use the car as a coat on really cold days (Reynauds), and just abandon it outside wherever I want to go. I have the Toast black padded coat with the black gingham lining from last year for emergencies but I don't wear it very much.

PeonyBlush10 · 01/12/2025 11:34

@oddandelsewhere that’s really useful feedback, thank you. I too like slightly oversize, I dislike when the arms are too tight to fit jumpers comfortably. It sounds like a perfect coat for transitional weather and I love that they last forever. I don’t mind wearing clothes that I love on repeat or spending money on an investment that will last, so I will keep this coat on my wish list.

PeonyBlush10 · 01/12/2025 11:40

@ScottishMouse I mentioned earlier that we had a moth problem this summer so you must think that it’s brave I bought a wool
coat. Thankfully, the problem has been confined to under the beds only - I’ve removed the storage boxes and treated the affected areas. So far, no evidence of moths in my wardrobe but I’m not complacent. I open it up regularly, clean dark corners and rotate the clothes and use sprays and other natural moth deterrents, so far so good, but it is a worry.

PeonyBlush10 · 01/12/2025 11:43

I also keep my coats out of the wardrobe and in the light as I gather moths really like dark, undisturbed places. Happy to be corrected if I’m doing the wrong thing.
