It's just not possible to look slim and elegant with big boobs is it

I saw an article about Kelly Brook, she has a new business venture so is posting a lot on social including a post today of her cycling in a bikini! I think she's facially really beautiful and although she's put on some weight since her lads mag days I wouldnt call her especially large. But because she has big boobs that's all you see and it gives the impression she's bigger than she is.

It's so depressing as a fellow big-boobed person. I am overweight and nowhere near as pretty but I feel even if/when I lose weight I'll never really look slim or stylish.

Is there any way round this? Minimiser bras are awful and normal ones are hideously uncomfortable. I'm tired of either looking tarty or matronly.

I think the most important thing is good fit and some waist definition. I make a lot of my tops and jackets as off the shelf rarely fit. I have narrow shoulders, large bust, short waist and short arms. I add bust darts to everything and it makes a huge difference. Otherwise yes, you are stuck with either gaping at the front or massively oversized. I think a lot of modern clothes, even expensive ones, are very badly cut around the bust. It's a shame Bravissimo stopped doing clothing but it's a difficult market I guess.

40andlovelife · 06/09/2025 11:21

Same with Mariah Carey. As soon as she had her boobs done she started to look bigger. I had my boobs done around 10 years ago. At the time I was super slim (size 6/8) and my larger boobs didn’t make me look bigger. Now I’m a size 8/10 my boobs definitely can make me look larger than I am depending on what I am wearing. So yes I agree with you

NotMeNoNo · 06/09/2025 11:29

Also I have terrible posture from decades of rounding my back to minimise the bust and fit into clothes better. Really hard to remember to correct it all the time.

luckyladygal · 06/09/2025 11:36

As a former huge boobs person I hear you ! I never felt I looked nice in anything and people stared at me a lot but I had a reduction 3 years ago and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself ! I love clothes shopping now and feel I look so much better and slimmer. I wish I had done it years ago but cost was a factor obviously

I know! I've spent a lifetime trying to find clothes that make me look elegant. It's a struggle. I love clothes but gave up on fashion a long time ago as it's designed for a completely different body shape. I tend to look for clothes that elongate, so, long dresses, wide, straight leg trousers that balance out the top half. I hate how pp on here diss waterfall cardigans as they're very flattering on me! I've also had chronic back problems for years. Sometimes I think having v large boobs is a bit like a disability tbh.

One thing I do that works is finding a pretty top or dress that fits my bust and sewing ribbons on to tie at the back which gives a bit of a waist.

With you on the waterfall cardie @Appalonia, perfect for our shape and tragic that they're so derided on MN. I know I shouldn't care, but equally I'm not oblivious to fashion and don't want to be seen as such.

A tunic top and leggings tucked into knee-length boots really suits me too - I call it the Principal Boy look 😄- but I can't think of anything less in fashion!

Evvyjb · 06/09/2025 13:07

Have had massive boobs all my life - 1st bra was a 30E, am currently a 36L/38K - and have the back hump, bra band scarring, the full works

I either look like a sack of potatoes or a Barbara Windsor impersonator. A bad one. Add curly hair and general clumsiness and I've never looked elegant in my life. Striking yes (with a LOT of effort), but will never be "effortless".

They're so uncomfortable. Bras are the bane of my life. Tops are always too short because the bazookas take up too.much fabric. And I'm 5'9 with a long body...

EasySqueezy · 06/09/2025 13:27

I’m five foot two with big boobs. I find I go for either empire line or shift dresses. Both take the emphasis of the bust. Cardigans are the worst. V neck makes me look worse.

I also have to confess that I am "that" woman who "gets her tits out". To look anything other than matronly, I need that low cut top or dress, so unfortunately the cleavage is on show. Sorry about that, but it exists, and I can't hide it away.

Nobodys Child Starlight dresses are fab for that.

I keep looking at the Starlight dresses and almost buying one but I fear that they won't fit (because of the boobage. How do they fit? Will I need to size up to create nork room?

cashmerecardigans · 06/09/2025 18:38

I think height makes a massive difference. I’m big boobed but am 5’9, so the proportions work better. Having said that, I am in the square, scoop or boat neck camp. I can’t do anything crew neck or polo neck, as my boobs look miles away from my head

DameSylvieKrin · 06/09/2025 18:38

(Speaking as a 30H) No, probably slim and elegant won’t ever be the first adjective people would use, but there are plenty of other great adjectives we can aim for. We just have to accept that we can’t really follow fashion or be inspired by what others wear. If you find a cut that suits you, get it in all the colours.
I go for a lot of very demure skirts to balance out the top half. Dresses need to have a very defined waist.

TheBossOfMe · 06/09/2025 18:45

I’m a size 6/8 with massive breasts. My tailor is a godsend. He refits all of my clothes so they fit everywhere properly

I can't do skirts though. It's my stumpy little legs (and I can't wear heels at all, arthritic feet). I did have some success with a ballet cardigan that tied just under my boobs - basically embracing the bust and giving me some shape. The absolute worst for me is long dresses though. The sturdy bra means that it has to be quite 'enclosed' (no strapless or halter backs here) and then the stumpy legs mean that the dress hits the floor. I look like a Dalek in drag.

Appalonia · 06/09/2025 19:09

And losing weight doesn't seem to help much either. A few years ago I went to India for 4 months. I lost 2 stone during that time. My WRISTS had lost more weight than my bloody boobs! I've also heard stories of women who have had a breast reduction and their boobs grew back!😂

Agree. I've pretty much figured out what works for me and I stick to that now. I was delighted when there were suddenly lots of v nice wide legged patterned trousers in the shops and I bought about 6 different pairs. Skinny jeans, short trousers, cigarette pants etc just make me look top heavy. But how long will they stay in fashion? I hate how you find things that suit your body shape and suddenly they're deemed the worst thing ever ( see previous comment about waterfall cardigans... )

Was a 28FF/G, so all breast on a slim back. I hated wearing v-necks, would not dare wear a camisole and never showed my cleavage. Was lucky that given my size, they were still incredibly pert. I had started to worry about my breasts starting to droop/sag and the inevitable matronly bosom/shelf. Clothing, particularly shirts, blouses and some jackets/coats never hung properly on me. I rarely wore necklaces. Even though I have a small waist, I always felt much bigger than I was. And yes, I know this sounds ridiculous. Although stylish, I never felt elegant.

And then I got breast cancer and ended up having to have a double mastectomy. I opted not to have reconstruction, nor do I wear falsies or any kind of padding/breast forms. Am not going to lie, it's fucking fantastic no longer having breasts. Can wear all the things I never dared from shirts open to my navel to backless dress. Skimpy camisoles? Absolutely. I even walk round the house naked now. I do still wear a tiny lacy bralette as having worn a bra for the best part of 35 years, it is weird not wearing one. But now, wearing a bra is a joy, as is the fact that not only do I look slim, but I feel super chic in pretty much everything.

Unfortunately I don't have £9k to spend on a boob reduction!

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 06/09/2025 19:54

i had a boob reduction in my early twenties and the surgeon warned me they would grow back and they kind of have but the shape is better 🤷🏻‍♀️. I have lost a chunk of weight thanks to mj and I am slim with boobs and although I may not be “elegant” my dh finds me sexy as so I’ll take that. I’m a size 10 with biggish boobs and I have to admit I feel good when I go out. I don’t want to be elegant really.

I'm sorry about your breast cancer, I hope you are ok now, but I can totally relate to the feeling of freedom you must feel now. I got big boobs when I was 13. I felt like I couldn't walk down the street without some bloke commenting on my body. I remember being about 15, going to a shop with my boyfriend and the guy who worked there, saying, she's big isn't she? Grown men saying, look at the tits on that! I HATED them. They made me feel ashamed, humiliated and so self conscious. I longed to be flat chested.

I HATED walking down the street and seeing a reflection of myself in the mirror and seeing how much they bounced. I was seriously sexually assaulted at age 13. I actually felt like my own body was a danger to me. I wouldn't go out of the house as a teenager without a jacket or cardigsn, even in hot weather. I could never trust if I met a guy if he liked me or my boobs. It felt so dehumanizing. I guess now at a much older age, I've accepted it, but I hate having to think about what to wear that won't make me look frumpy or tarty. EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Confused19831983 · 06/09/2025 20:04

I am in a similar position and Bravissimo really is very good. I know it’s mainly underwear but they have a clothing range as well.

Madagascary · 06/09/2025 20:34

@Appalonia no, most people don't. My dad died so I spent some money on that. But I found out that lots of people seem to get loans.

Madagascary · 06/09/2025 20:35

After reduction, it's really nice buying clothes without having to think what's gonna happen with my boobs or buying some separate size bigger on top and bottom. Just saying I am size 1012 whatever you are.

curious79 · 07/09/2025 06:11

SoftLass · 06/09/2025 07:13

I agree completely, it's either swamped or boobs on a stick. I'm 5'10" with 34GG boobs and tiny waist. Anything fitted just emphasises the boobs. Wrap dresses or tops don't work at all for massive boobs they just scream cleavage at everyone.
I find boat necks are actually the most flattering for me.
I've recently lost a ton of weight (never off the boobs!!) and am planning a reduction once I've kept it off a year. I'm post-menopausal and just had enough of them now. @curious79 if you want to share your surgeons details, please do!

Professor Kefah Mokbel- he’s superb

with hospital fees though, all in it’ll set you back c£25k
