Wedding dress for 50 year old, second marriage, not keen on fussiness

Not even sure about white/ivory versus a bolder colour.

I know people will say wear whatever you want but I don't know what I want!!!

I don't want to look like mother of the bride but equally don't want to be all trussed up.

In normal life I like tailoring, dark rich colours or pale blue, and nothing fussy or frilly/girly.

Wedding would be very small, during winter and either in a nice small hotel or registry office tbc.

Thoughts and ideas please! Especially about white vs not!

I really liked Queen Camilla 's wedding outfit!

Re white - it doesn't 'mean' anything - it started when Queen Victoria had a white gown because she could afford it. Nothing to do with purity, virginity bla bla bla.

Also - white doesn't suit everyone. Is it in your colour palette? It makes me look greyish and washed out and doesn't flatter my teeth!

Think instead:

Your colouring

Your figure

Your personal taste

And enjoy!

maybe something like this https://www.monsoon.co.uk/colette-midi-wedding-dress-ivory-20002140016.html

but as it is a winter wedding add a coloured jacket, shoes etc to break up the ivory.

It's a good idea but no I wouldn't to be honest.

I did that before my son's wedding, went to a good salon but it was slightly orange and didn't take all over, ended up going to have a scrub/massage to get back to square one.

Oh no! That would be my fear. Hope it got sorted out!

Just buy Tan Luxe tanning drops and mix a couple with your moisturiser. You can’t go wrong (honestly). It will give a glow. Wash your hands afterwards.

I recently got married for the second time (elopement) and I wore white flowery flared jeans from River Island! A pair of wedges, white blazer and a green vest. Just could not be arsed with wearing something that wasn't me.

Yes, it was OK thanks. I just ended up white which was what I'd been trying to avoid! Fortunately had some nice tights and a simple jacket.

Love this. I do agree about the outfit needing to feel "you"

Pearl grey or deep ivory midi dress , with optional jacket would be my choice

Scrabblingabout · 08/09/2025 16:01

I have decided knee length is more me and I will feel drowned in anything longer. I'm very small and never wear maxi dresses and "midaxi" ones cut my legs off in unflattering ways! This means that many of the otherwise beautiful dresses here are off the list but cuts things down too!

Just to warn you knee length is blooming hard to find at the moment unless looking at deliberately retro (1950s) styles.

Scrabblingabout · 08/09/2025 18:15

Nice!

Coming back to this, I get really cold and have realised being warm is important or I'll be miserable or just keep my coat on over whatever otherwise lovely outfit!

So warm options (winter in Scotland!) will be vital.

Did you choose an outfit yet? We might be able to help if you let us know what you’ve chosen - especially the colour. I know you wanted a short dress - are you wearing any form of nude tights? What about the shoes? Are outdoor photos likely?

I'm thinking a dark colour satin outfit, possibly from the Fold. Brown boots, then the sort of wrap/shrug linked to.

Sounds fab. What colour satin? I think a bridal outfit deserve something fabulous. If you don’t want to splurge out for something that you might wear only once, would you consider hiring something special for the day? It could also serve as you’re something borrowed. I’d highly recommend the By Rotation app which I used to hire my Sophia Webster wedding clutch.

I've never seen the Fold before, beautifully cut, just my sort of clothing. I'll buy something there for my next special occasion I think.

That wine-red 'peacock' cape is very nice!

I was expecting a peacock feather number (green/blue) and have seen some of those somewhere ... but they do have a performatively quirky air to them, whereas this one's confidently chic.

GarlicPint · 17/09/2025 16:31

Or maybe a beautiful coat like this one (you'll wear it afterwards, too) and then build your outfit around it. The Fold does have dresses in this colour, I'm just not sure they'd look right with the coat and for a bride.

Swishy wide-leg trousers or jumpsuit would be good with the coat, or a beautifully structured dress or skirt the same length as the coat. There's quite a bit of cornflower blue around; someone must have done the perfect thing in silk or faux satin.

Preview didn't load: the coat. It's £750.

It's unlikely something I hire would fit properly. I'm not very big so need either a petite range or something tailored to fit better.

Lots drowns me.
