Wedding dress for 50 year old, second marriage, not keen on fussiness

Not even sure about white/ivory versus a bolder colour.

I know people will say wear whatever you want but I don't know what I want!!!

I don't want to look like mother of the bride but equally don't want to be all trussed up.

In normal life I like tailoring, dark rich colours or pale blue, and nothing fussy or frilly/girly.

Wedding would be very small, during winter and either in a nice small hotel or registry office tbc.

Thoughts and ideas please! Especially about white vs not!

Congratulations!

What's your budget? And what size/shape/height are you?

cupfinalchaos · 03/09/2025 16:20

How about a simple slim-fitting pale blue silk dress (depending on your shape)?

Scrabblingabout · 03/09/2025 16:21

Budget maybe up to £350 for something lovely.
Not including shoes.

I am short and slim (size 6-8) with hips.

Just find the whole bridey look quite cringe somehow despite having done it years ago first time!

Oh and I love an interesting neckline eg cowl, turtle neck. I suit things that are belted at the waist.

Brands I like: Boden, Reiss, Hobbs, Lauren Ralph Lauren (when feeling flush)!

It’s really up to you, would you prefer a dress you typically wouldn’t justify buying but you can wear again?

I opted for “proper” bridal myself because I decided why not, i didn’t have a proper dress first time around

I think something I can wear again.

I guess timing is good as if it's to happen in early Marxh I can look at pre-Christmas occasion wear!

Congratulations! Happy news!

I love jewel colours for winter weddings - I think something like this would be absolutely gorgeous: https://www.cefinn.com/products/ophelia-bias-cut-velvet-maxi-dress-dark-green and you could definitely wear it again, even if it is a little above budget and you could google and might find it for a little less.

First time I got married it was in a red/burgundy strapless. If I ever do it again I am eloping in something metallic!

Ooh a winter wedding- lovely. That widens your options. I would go for something in velvet, maybe a velvet trouser suit in a dark plum colour or dark green. With a silk or satin shirt or blouse.

jonthebatiste · 03/09/2025 16:28

How about a trouser suit? In whatever colour you usually look good in?

If it’s to be a dress, I think Camilla Parker Bowles looked spot on for her second marriage - not white or ivory, beautiful neckline and silhouette flowing from it, tailored but shapely, comfortable, gorgeous fabric, not at all matronly. I think it was the perfect second-marriage/middle aged woman wedding outfit. Maybe a dress in that sort of style?

elastamum · 03/09/2025 16:30

Congratulations! I got married at 60 and bought a lovely pale pink designer dress with sequins from a FB veni infantino mother of the bride page. It had been worn once before but only for a day. Cost me £300 less than half price new. I also didn't feel comfortable with a traditional wedding dress.

Yes and I prefer winter clothes anyway!

Im your age, and I might get married again. Sometimes when I fantasise about it I think either a 3 piece tailored white suit (cos then id wear again), with white doc martens - just cos i think that look looks very cool. OR the metallic vampires wife dress. Both a very cool look that you can wear again. Like you, I don't like fuss. You can get this way cheaper - and Id never pay half that for a dress usually, but for my wedding maybe I would as I could keep wearing it. It would end up getting worn every xmas. Its just so damn pretty.

Yes and I prefer winter clothes anyway!

I’m 50 in November .
If I were to get married , I’d def go for an ivory dress , very simple but elegant style though ..
I’m 5/4 , slim , you sound similar OP ..

Congrats btw ☺️
I hope you have a lovely time & a happy life x

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 03/09/2025 17:13

Don't go for a jumpsuit. 2 glasses of bubbly and you'll need a wee.
Self Portrait are beautiful dresses.

Scrabblingabout · 03/09/2025 17:16

Like some of the ghost ones but not sure about long since I am only 5ft2?

I am thinking ivory could work if tailored/structured OR darker would be ok slinkier/satiny but it needs to be one or the other! Ivory would be tricky unless long though for tights in winter as I'm not keen on natural colour ones and have horrid pale legs! Hmmm Long tan boots??

Yeah I know. I said you can get them cheaper/second hand. You can't buy vampires dresses anymore new as they went out of business. They are bloody gorgeous though, and you can get one for £350.

PrimevalStomp · 03/09/2025 18:03

Congratulations!

If it were me, with that budget I would throw my entire life into finding a

Magda Butrym

dress to rent.

Oh my! They are quite something aren't they.

Now they are going on my wish list along with Vampires Wife, and Nancy Mac.

He hasn't even asked me but a girl (old lady) can dream. :)

PrimevalStomp · 03/09/2025 18:20

(I meant to add - not perhaps from the current collections whose rental prices would probably still be too high, but from past collections.)

Yes, breathtaking!

Rental possibilities:

Scrabblingabout · 03/09/2025 18:38

Just looking around and some of the tailored dresses on the Fold are gorgeous. Maybe a bit too corporate though?! Perhaps with the right accessories/flowers though??

Yes jumpsuit doesn't appeal due to loo issues although they do look great on people.

Do like a trouser suit but doesn't feel right for this.

Off to click on the Magda ones link...

Would you get a very, very light fake tan done in Salon OP ?
