She hides behind her hats and her sunglasses, they are a defence - perhaps, as well, her hair would look a bit unkempt if she took it off?

Surely all the women would have had this problem?Hats are removable and can be put back on if needed so she could have put it back on before going to the chapel I just think wearing it all the time has the effect of making her look grumpy, especially as it covers so much of her face, which is a shame

Yes, I agree. Because none of her hair was on display, I imagined it all tucked away in Carmen rollers waiting for the big reveal at dinner 😉

for technical accuracy Donald Trump's mother was Mary Anne Macleod as back in the 1920's gaelic names were never or very very rarely on birth certificates so even if she was called Mairi at home it was not her legal name. In Lewis it would have been Macleod no capital L and always Mac not Mc ( this doesn't meant it isn't McLeod elsewhere) but her relatives that still live in the area are all Macleod, The village she lived in would have been mostly gaelic speaking at home but school would have been entirely in English, at that time many gaelic speakers could not read or write gaelic as it wasn't taught in school

Thanks for that interesting info, @Cottagecheeseisnotcheese 👍

Melania needs a spirit level for her hats. I like a big hat better than an oversized fascinator.
I wonder if Donald has any Gaelic words. I had two grandparents who used occasional Irish or Welsh words they inherited from their own parents in childhood.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 17/09/2025 18:13

@Maireas in the distant past I lived within a few miles of there

Poor Mary Macleod Trump was mugged aged 79 in Long Island, for $14, and badly beaten.
Can you imagine? What a vile creature that mugger was.

I don't mind big hats - just not indoors

Is there a way to watch the pre-dinner bit? Or do we just get photos?

TheAvidQuoter · 17/09/2025 18:56

According to The Telegraph, Sophie Edinburgh wont be at the banquet tonight because she has departed for an overseas engagement.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 17/09/2025 19:02

Well played Sophie! I think I read somewhere that she and Edward are heading off on a tour soon, possibly Japan? But if he's there tonight then that can't be it.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 17/09/2025 19:06

Jenny Packham has just released a sneak peek at Kate's outfit for tonight. We all know how much she loves her literal dressing...

Prince Edward is already in Papua New Guinea .That's why he wasn't at the funeral yesterday.

lol! My friend just said ‘I bet Kate turns up in an American flag dress’.

TheAvidQuoter · 17/09/2025 19:16

Can style and beauty extend to table layouts? Footage just released of Charles and Csmilla inspecting the table laid for the banquet tonight. I am impressed and so will Trump.

Sidebeforeself · 17/09/2025 19:20

If Kate wanted to dress literally she should wear a dress in Donald Orange!!

If anyone has images or write-ups (or links) for the floral decorations please post them...

@KiIIingMeDeftly Whilst we're waiting for the banquet action to kick off you might enjoy the American road racing champion in his kit. The guy on the left is in the world champion's rainbow stripes and his teammate on the top step in team kit (the main team sponsor is UAE).
