Just seen these photos - Camilla and Kate have both removed their hats but maybe nobody told Melanie the etiquette - it does look a bit ridiculous indoors.

And I’d love to know what William was thinking with that expression…

These photos are hilarious! Melania looking like the Ghost of Christmas Future and the expression on William's face 😆

Maireas · 17/09/2025 15:42

I'd love to look round that room with them at all the cultural stuff they've brought out. They've got some proper treasures tucked away there!

It now makes sense. After the photos were taken indoors, the Trumps were heading to St George's chapel to lay a wreath on the tomb of QEII and listen to a recital. A hat is appropriate for that setting.

But how does one know when to remove the hat because here is one of QEII indoors in her hat! Or had they just stepped inside at that point - they are in a hallway - so it wasn’t yet an indoor event which meant no hats?

Do you think it’s in the briefing notes that they haven’t bothered to read?

I think people are being unkind to Melania here. It is clear from the news feed that they were shown the artefacts before going to the Chapel. Something I saw earlier suggested those two events were going to take place the other way round. So Melania kept her hat on to go to St George's chapel and then there was the change of plan.

deeahgwitch · 17/09/2025 16:07

When Mairí Anna Mc Leod left Lewis off the coast of Scotland in 1929/1930 I bet she never dreant that her son would become the President of the USA and visit Britain and be entertained on a State visit not once, but twice, by the Royal family.

NewAgeNewMe · 17/09/2025 16:07

i seem to remember reading that if you are in your home you remove your hat as your maid is there to fix your hair; but if a visiting guest you leave it on as you don’t have your maid with you.

Or to be fair this could be absolutely made up and I’ve not remembered correctly.

Cassiope · 17/09/2025 15:40

It doesn't and looks silly sillier indoors... Take the hat off Melania

She was off to St George's chapel to show respects to the late Queen straight after looking at the stuff. You would probably be one of the first to criticise had she not worn a hat to that part of the days events.

I agree. I remember an episode of Doenton Abbey when all the ladies were lunching with Granny Violet and they all kept their hats on and at the time I thought it was odd but now it makes sense.

She hides behind her hats and her sunglasses, they are a defence - perhaps, as well, her hair would look a bit unkempt if she took it off?

She was off to church straight afterwards. That explains why she kept it on.

I would have put the hat back on for the chapel

RomainingCalm · 17/09/2025 16:17

I don't think anyone on here was being unkind to Melania @TheAvidQuoter - more bemused by her wearing her hat indoors and the myriad of confusing (and sometimes unwritten) rules that the Royals and their guests are expected to understand and follow.

I hadn't realised that the Trumps were going to St George's chapel - that makes sense - but the photos still look a little incongruous.

I'd have found st George's chapel very moving knowing our queen was laid there.

No. I'm here for the clothes and know very little about royal etiquette. I think hats look daft indoors and since the other women had taken theirs off I assumed there was no etiquette reason for Melania not to do likewise. Not sure why you've jumped on me.

eggandonion · 17/09/2025 16:23

I think timings were changed too because of the weather and the flypast.
I read that the late queen was bemused by the Trump's relationship and thought they had some sort of arrangement . I also read that she had a good chat with Donald about having a Scottish mother and having land in Scotland. I can't imagine Melania has chats.

I don't think it would have been noticeable to the same extent if it had been a smaller hat - but that huge dish shape, where you can't see her eyes sort of cut her off from the group.

illI bet Camilla just wants to dive under a duvet for a couple of hours.. the thought of a tiara with the pain from sinusitis this evening 🙈

HollyhockDays · 17/09/2025 16:29

Melania’s outfit is Dior. She looks fab IMHO. Not keen on Kate’s look.

Ive just seen a picture of her sitting outside for the fly past by the Red Arrows. Camilla looks chilled to the bone. I hope she doesn't end up in hospital after all this.

She looked amazing - so chic.

Kate terribly safe and dull, as usual.

I once read the American designers refused to dress the first lady back in 2016 so she turned to Europe. Whose sorry now I wonder.

I'm sure they can live with their decision.
