Drop shoulders, as it's cheaper than doing inset shoulders.
Seams that are not properly double stitched

I actually prefer drop shoulders. My shoulders are quite small for my size so inset shoulders are usually too wide and it really annoys me.

DancingFerret · 03/08/2025 23:53

Detail stitching, sleeves without cuffs (basically unfinished) - and currently, anything from M&S; awful fabrics, sparkly bits in odd places, and trousers with stupidly wide legs ((I know they're fashionable right now, but they don't do short people like me any favours at all.

RabbitFurCoat · 04/08/2025 00:05

Jeans are much less likely to be 100% cotton now. Elastane in bloody everything.

RabbitFurCoat · 04/08/2025 00:09

Oh and that thing they do where they add a reinforced section to the back of a top with interfacing but they don't stitch it down, so it rolls up and out of the top of the neck hole and looks utterly shite. So pointless.

Elasticated waistbands that aren't stitched in properly so the elastic rolls and twists and bunches and looks ugly.

Garments made with pricier fabrics like wool, silk & cotton lined with polyester, why? I buy natural fabrics because I want natural fabrics and I don’t want any polyester.

green washing. Does any really believe companies like Zara give a shit about anything other than their bottom line? Their whole business model is incredibly bad for the planet

‘vegan’ leather. It’s plastic.

Absolutely the polyester lining! So stupid!

Labels and hanging loops. I always have to cut them out and end up with itchy stubs. Now there are long ones across the back of some tops.

Clothes cut in piles so that I buy one that fits and buy the same trousers from the shop a few days later and they don’t fit grrr.

I used to work in clothing manufacturing. I don’t think size differences are due to fabrics been cut in piles. The fabrics are weighted down at either end to stop them moving and they are cut with a vertical knife or laser. Sometimes a vacuum holds the fabric in place.

It’s often because they’re cut in different factories.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/08/2025 19:54

If they gape, doesn't that mean they are too small?

I suppose it's from the days of natural fibres with no stretch. If you put your hands in your pockets, over time the fabric would stretch and gape.

And having your hands on your pockets was frowned upon anyway 😆

Daffodilsarefading · 04/08/2025 07:25

Boxy style tops and jackets.
See through clothing.
Labels sewn into the neck- makes me itch so I have to remove them but they often leave a tiny stub which itches.
Low cut tops, just stop, I don’t want my boobs on display.
Bows on bras-why?
Sports bras that I can’t fasten. I need my straps crossing for support but can’t get the damn thing on without dh’s help.
Also lack of supportive sports bras. Why are most of them designed for women without breasts?
Lack of plain neutral coloured jumpers. It took me ages to find a soft, ivory coloured jumper. Eventually found one from Roman online. When it came it was see through 😡, why?
Why is visually everything covered in inane designs? I don’t want to wear patterns and silly slogans.
Trainers which have a level sole. Very bad for my feet. I need my heel to be raised.

drspouse · 04/08/2025 07:40

If you find cutting out labels leaves a stub, get a seam ripper - only cut the threads for the label itself.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 04/08/2025 07:51

Lack of v neck anything. I just want decent fitted v neck tshirts and jumpers.

Dropped shoulders, they make my huge boobs look bigger.

Pockets in dresses, I hate them, they ruin the shape of some beautiful dresses. I know people love them(please don't shoot me for having an opinion which happens too often on here) but they're not for me.

Caterpillargirl23 · 04/08/2025 07:59

Rather than 'designed to fit a UK size' put in the measurements eg inside leg, waist and bust.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/08/2025 08:12

Tops that are too short.
I am not that tall, but my height is in my torso. Tops used to reach my middle. Some even tucked in. Boden and Gap even did “tall” fittings for their tops. Now I just have to expose my midriff (I am very much not a lean and lithe person who wants to shoe off their middle. I do love high waisted trousers though! ). Now they all seem a good 2” shorter than they used to be.

ItsBouqeeeet · 04/08/2025 08:19

Jumpsuits with a button at the top of the back. You need to be a contortionist to get dressed and practically need to dislocate your shoulder to unbutton, whilst hoping you don't accidentally wee yourself!

Some websites are better at doing that than others. It's one of the reasons I buy from Uniqlo.

Unlike what seems like the majority of mumsnetters I am not hug of boob and find that shirts don't look good on me because they make me look even more flat chested, so I welcome the breast pockets.

I love boxy tops for the same reason and being pear shaped they end at the right place for me (just above the hips). Long tops emphasise my hips, which I don't need.

sueelleker · 04/08/2025 08:55

hattie43 · 03/08/2025 17:41

I’ve bought a phase 8 shirt and the button placement is such that it gapes open at the bust . Really infuriating

I've had lots of tops like that. And I hate skirts with a flounce that starts just below my hips-they're big enough, they don't need exaggerating!

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 04/08/2025 08:57

As a plus-size person finding shorts and trousers that fit properly can be challenging. For some reason the gusset is too low, or the waist is too high, or both. I have to fold the waistband over.

miserableandworried · 04/08/2025 09:00

Tiered maxi dresses. Absolutely awful an no matter the print, make you look like a colonial sheep herder.

I want one piece of material please! Not multiple pieces stitched together like a wedding cake.

CeeJay81 · 04/08/2025 09:23

Very low cut tops/dresses. I'm short with tiny boobs.

Jeans, just Jeans full stop. I haven't warn a pair in over a decade except the odd pair of jeggings. They never properly and look awful.

TealReader · 04/08/2025 09:30

Blouse/shirt gaping
Waist gaps
Poor quality materials
Difficulty finding any shaped/inset shoulders

I’m very hourglass shaped and buying clothes is so difficult, which is frustrating as I love fashion.

BlooodyKids · 04/08/2025 09:35

So called 'petite' trousers that merely offer a shorter leg length without any thought whatsoever to the waist/crotch ratio. Most so-called petite ranges just shorten the inseam and leave it at that, with no thought to how proportions actually work. A fairly proportioned short person won't just have shorter legs than the average person, the body will also be shorter, and jeans waists that almost reach the bra strap are not a good look and they're extremely uncomfortable.

Yes! My poor mum is 5' 0" and even pette trousers usually end up right under her boobs.

Hoods that aren't deep enough to accommodate a pony tail....while where on that matter could we please bring back car head rests with a pony tail hole on please.

Also hoods that make you look like a monk, particularly on rain jackets. Ive got one on mine that actually comes down to my chin.
Now, this goes against the whole "pockets are brilliant" thing and doesn't affect me in the slightest, but I've noticed a trend (yes on the trashy "which wedding dress" reels) for wedding dresses with pockets. OK I see a bit for practicality, but your hardly going to need your card, phone and keys going down the aisle. But then they pose with their hands in pockets! No, take them out! You look like a slob! You spend a fortune on a dress, for one day, at least try and look elegant!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 04/08/2025 09:50

Oh and bought a shirt from m&s years ago and it was no gape. It basically had an extra button and hole hidden under the placket. Was a pita to put on but t worked.

MagpiePi · 04/08/2025 10:06

Memorable · 03/08/2025 21:22

Hoods on coats that fall over your face

Hoods on coats that are too small and keep falling back, and don’t keep the rain off your face.
Rain coats that don’t have flaps over the pockets so you end up with a pocketful of water.

Blouse/ shirt gaping

As someone who has boobs - side zips. Often have to go up two sizes if a dress has a side zip.
