What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

What heatwave? It has been significantly cooler these last couple of weeks and it has been warm rather than hot. I have been back in jeans this week.

There was a heatwave in the UK, several, in fact- it was drier than usual and average temperatures higher than average for several weeks. May, June and the start of July were very hot, we had temperatures of over 30°c on occasion and it didn't dip below the high 20s for weeks

Cheeseplantandcrackers · 01/08/2025 08:31

I live in dresses, some of them floral. But I get it! The shops are full of nasty cheaply made dresses that wouldn’t flatter even the most beautiful women.
You can get some beautifully made dresses with gorgeous patterns though.
It’s also what you wear with the dress imo.
Although I am partial to that 90’s flowery dress with boots look so I’m a rubbish one to talk.

I couldn’t go to work in shorts and a vest but can in a dress. In the winter I’ll add tights or swap for chinos.

BTW, I’m not offended that you have dissed the national uniform 😉

She sounds really rude and unpleasant.

She's lovely and everyone around her adores her. She's only jealous of my youthful looks. We could be mistaken for sisters and I would be her younger sister she hates that. She has to get over it and face facts.

5128gap · 01/08/2025 08:33

I guess it's because when garments are sufficiently expensive and come from the 'right' shops, and are promoted using beautiful models who make them look aspirational and we see lots of other women wearing them, it can be difficult to know what we genuinely like and what we've been conditioned to think is nice. The same can be said for any fashion. At least the dresses have the practical benefits of being cool and comfortable and allowing women to conceal parts of their bodies society tells them are ugly, so they may feel more confident.

Love a dress. Easiest items to wear.

Baring flesh in e.g. 'shorts and a tank' won't keep you cool in hot weather. Baring flesh in hot weather makes you hot.

A loose, floaty cotton maxi dress, on the other hand, is like having your own personal air conditioning.

I was just going to post exactly the same. You don't stay cooler by baring more flesh.

WTF?!

Jesus Christ, remind me never to attempt a joke on MN again.

A joke is , by definition, funny. If you have to explain it , or apologise for it, or get snippy when your audience doesn't think it's funny then it's definitely not a joke. If you don't like how British women dress then feel free to fly back to the fabulously glamorous place you came from.

I am more offended by you and your language of a child who is much younger than you. You should feel ashamed of yourself at least my DD has a sense of humour where as you are just abusive towards children.

KateMiskin · 01/08/2025 08:37

I would personally like fewer floral dresses and more solids or stripes in the shops. Would also love to see the death of puff sleeves, tiers, frilly yokes and Little House on the prairie styles. So hard to find a simple cotton dress with no tiers for a reasonable price.

My legs are my best feature even in my 50s so I wear shorts a lot, but not to work.

ThatCyanCat · 01/08/2025 08:38

You can’t be French as they all claim to swan about in channel

I know this is just a typo and I'm not being mean, but it's giving me a mental image of English swans all causing havoc across the Channel and pissing off France. "We can do what we want, we're owned by the King!"

Making me laugh, anyway.

But if you’re trying to pass yourself off her younger sister, she can’t be a child can she?

I love dresses, but this flowery prints have been exhausing for a while already. Plainly colored dressesare the best.

CeeJay81 · 01/08/2025 08:38

I love dresses, got the odd floral one. They make me look pretty slim cause they hide my big bum. I wouldn't wear shorts and a tank top or dungarees cause I'd look terrible in them. I don't care wether it's fashionable, I just dress to suit and what feels comfy.

Flowers sell best because they disguise the tummy area. Plain colours don't do that so they're probably less popular with us Brits ( cos obviously we're all fat and wobbly as well as unfashionable)

You don't get it do you. Don't worry about it move on. She's a child don't make excuses for your poor language.

Comfort for me. Currently the thought of wearing shorts or jeans around my waist will just irritate me - 48ish hormonal, either really hot or sweaty and hot. Fake tan against the red face , sweating sticky nope.

The only thing i put any thought in is the material of the dress and no silly sleeves or collars.

I don't think it's "fashionable" to wear shorts and a vest for weeks on end, I suspect that the OP just found it practical and comfortable for herself, travelling etc. it's hardly a style statement.

I know. It has been very hot where I live as well (South Yorkshire), but is has been 18 - 21 degrees the last couple of weeks, which is warm rather than hot.

Back to the thread. I have also had a quick peek in my wardrobe and I own 4 dresses that have some kind of floral pattern on them, and I love them all. None of them have flounces or puff sleeves though.

I like the cliched denim jacket with a dress combo because the pockets mean I don't need to carry a handbag.

Some of my dresses are years old because our summer weather means I don't really get to wear them very often.

Long live dresses.

Beesandhoney123 · 01/08/2025 08:47

I love seeing everyone in pretty dresses, and wear them myself.

I have no intention of wears shorts and a t shirt. Unless gardening. Or a walk along a windy cliff top.

Dontcallmescarface · 01/08/2025 08:47

Bloody floral patterns are everywhere. Seen 1 floral dress/top seen them all, vibes of furniture covers and curtains being "repurposed".

Falseknock · 01/08/2025 08:48

@ddfd21 if you believe it's okay yo abuse strangers online then you should not be on the internet it's a criminal offence to hound a stranger and send abusive messages.
