I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

She's lovely and everyone around her adores her. She's only jealous of my youthful looks. We could be mistaken for sisters and I would be her younger sister she hates that. She has to get over it and face facts.

Yeah! Right!

Remind why I should care what you and your daughter think about my floral dresses.

needtostopnamechanging · 01/08/2025 08:48

I really am not a dress or skirt person at all but as long as the shops have clothes I can wear I can’t imagine starting a thread about people having the audacity to wear dresses as long as they are vaguely decent ( and I amn’t down the big market in a Saturday night where decent is clearly an unreasonable expectation)

Cathandkin · 01/08/2025 08:49

RampantIvy · 01/08/2025 08:47

I know. It has been very hot where I live as well (South Yorkshire), but is has been 18 - 21 degrees the last couple of weeks, which is warm rather than hot.

Back to the thread. I have also had a quick peek in my wardrobe and I own 4 dresses that have some kind of floral pattern on them, and I love them all. None of them have flounces or puff sleeves though.

I like the cliched denim jacket with a dress combo because the pockets mean I don't need to carry a handbag.

Some of my dresses are years old because our summer weather means I don't really get to wear them very often.

Long live dresses.

Right, sorry, you said "what heatwave?" , so I thought maybe you lived elsewhere.
Enjoy your floral dresses! Colour and pattern adds joy to life! Down with greige!

needtostopnamechanging · 01/08/2025 08:49

You do know when people say you look so young you could be sisters they are having a joke right?

muggart · 01/08/2025 08:50

This thread is quite bonkers.

Anyway, I do think that NYC is full of exceptionally style-conscious young women, many of whom go to the gym multiple times a week and spend a fortune on their appearance. So perhaps the average new yorker shows more flesh than the average Brit.

Maybe on the OP’s travels across the UK she’s seen more of a representative cross section of society.

Falseknock · 01/08/2025 08:48

@ddfd21 if you believe it's okay yo abuse strangers online then you should not be on the internet it's a criminal offence to hound a stranger and send abusive messages.

Who sent you an abusive message?

bindin · 01/08/2025 08:51

This thread is quite bonkers.

Defo not your average S&B thread! 😆

Falseknock · 01/08/2025 08:52

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2025 08:45

Totally agree. She sounds nasty and you don't sound much better @Falseknock .

If you believe it's okay to talk to strangers like that online and nothing can ever happen to them then continue you will all be found out. It's not on to be abusive and bully online strangers. I was being playful with my comments you and the other poster are taking it to far and trying to harm someone you don't know.

RealPearlDuck · 01/08/2025 08:52

I live in dresses, but never the flowery ones. Can't stand them.

Christwosheds · 01/08/2025 08:52

I’ve worn Summer dresses my entire life, I was born in the 60s and as a small child I had lovely cotton dresses for Summer days.
I do wear trousers and a shirt when not in a dress. I’ve never worn shorts and a vest . I did occasionally wear my Mum’s old fifties high-waisted shorts with little fitted tops when I was young and thin, but only for really hot days or on the beach.
Dresses are cool and easy, it’s such a simple outfit - bra, knickers, dress, sandals. I wear them all year but more in the Summer.

Aliksa · 01/08/2025 08:53

This thread is vicious! Style is normally so friendly. OP said she meant it as a joke.

I cannot wear dresses as I’m an apple shape with massive shoulders due to a lifetime of rowing and cycling. Plus can’t cycle or show off your legs in big dresses.

Sometimes I see a loud dress and think “gahhhh” but often I just think “wow, gutsy”. Many women wearing dresses that look awful on them, and many carrying it off well. But as long as they are happy… who wants to look like a French woman anyway? I’m happy to be British and I will stand by my unstylish shorts and pretty tops and functional sandals, and let the ladies have their voluminous dresses if they want them so much!

EconomyClassRockstar · 01/08/2025 00:15

In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!

Interesting. I've never seen anyone look good in a tank so I'm glad it's not the norm round here.

I absolutely hate my legs so wouldnt want to wear shorts. Long flowey dress is perfect for me in hot weather (i dont have flowery ones though)

But they all tend to wear the same clothes in NY! When I went in winter 2024 half of this demographic was wearing leggings, boxy coat, ugly New Balance Shoes and alo socks pulled as high as possible so everyone knew where they went for a workout. All leggings were black and coats were grey, navy or camel.

Don't get me wrong they looked nice, but sooo boring.

KateMiskin · 01/08/2025 08:58

Where do people get their non flowery cotton dresses? Cotton is important for me. Or at least viscose.

Falseknock · 01/08/2025 08:59

It was a joke we're always ribbing eachother.

It’s not quite bonkers, it’s totally bonkers.

It’s interesting, having recently returned from France, both Paris (l used to live there, though UK born) and the Marseilles area, it’s usually the visiting Americans that stand out in the crowd.

That sounds very dull to me!

EconomyClassRockstar · 01/08/2025 00:33

WTF?!

Jesus Christ, remind me never to attempt a joke on MN again.

Jokes have to be funny OP. What you said was unkind and has obviously upset people. If you stopped and thought for a moment you’d notice that these dresses are worn primarily by middle aged women of all shapes and sizes who perhaps don’t have the body confidence to be wearing shorts and tanks. Who walked out of the house feeling good about themselves and then read your thread.

thatsgotit · 01/08/2025 09:01

I think I know where you're coming from OP. Tbf I've seen some really pretty dresses around recently, but my God are there some ugly shrouds in the shops as well. I don't get why so many dresses are so baggy at the moment (think Toast), I see so many dresses on sale that look at least a size too big for the wearer. Obviously aesthetics and fashion are subjective, but I have to be honest, I often wonder if some of the baggy/shapeless numbers are designed to make some kind of feminist point, as in 'look at me rejecting the male gaze'. I could be completely wrong, and of course people should dress in a way that makes them happy - that's the whole point of fashion - but either way I personally find oversized dresses (and ones that look like they're made out of sacks) really unflattering. JMO.

bindin · 01/08/2025 09:01

This is bonkers! A tank top is just a top without sleeves, where do you live that noons wears them? Is it an age thing?

thatsgotit · 01/08/2025 09:02

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 01/08/2025 00:49

Nope. I'll take pale and interesting every time over looking like you've applied furniture stain.

Tbf if it looks like that you're applying it wrong.

Cathandkin · 01/08/2025 09:02

I think it's just fashion. Looser cuts at the moment, a rejection of body con. Plus one person's ugly is another person's stylish, so....

I thought it was because tailoring is expensive and everyone wants to cut costs. I agree. All those voluminous dresses are so hard on the Tube.
