I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

Yes, those dresses are awful. Like several PP my summer dresses are years old because they hardly get worn. My favourite maxi came from BHS, which went into administration 9 years ago. I have a couple of Seasalt summer dresses that are a few years old, the Uniqlo airism one that is beloved by a lot of people and a couple of others, and this Fatface one which has garnered a lot of compliments:

Ooh, I do like that Fat Face one!

Applefantea · 01/08/2025 12:42

I agree, most floral dresses look bloody awful and there are some shockers available at the moment. Most prints don't look good full stop. It's often hard to find a plain dress though in a colour other than black or navy, and work dressing during very hot weather doesn't allow for shorts.

R0ckandHardPlace · 01/08/2025 12:51

I get you, OP. I went into London yesterday and saw loads of women who looked like they were going to a fancy dress party as Little Bo-Peep.

The alogorithm sent me these. Bloody awful most of them. The overpriced Rixo leopard meets polka dot dress at the top! My eyes, my eyes!

This is why I am wearing wide leg trousers and a broderie anglaise blouse today, and shorts/ tee tomorrow for a long walk.

The 6 summer dresses we’re buying now and wearing into autumn

Chic, versatile and timeless

My floral dresses don't look bloody awful - to me. I always get compliments when I wear any of my dresses. It's just personal taste.

Admittedly, they are flounce and puffy sleeve free.

They were dressed as shepherdesses?

You were in the wrong part of London - the really cool girls hang out in their vest tops and shorts. I hear Primarni do a lovely range.

Cantonet · 01/08/2025 12:55

Surely print dresses are very British & have been for time immemorial.
The standard high street in any small town will have dresses selling lots of print. Fat Face, Mistral, Hobbs & Sea salt are typical shops left in my local rural town. There's no Mango, Zara and the like left any more in my County. Its hard to be sophisticated if those are the only shops you have.

twilighteaser · 01/08/2025 13:02

RampantIvy · 01/08/2025 09:06

but either way I personally find oversized dresses (and ones that look like they're made out of sacks) really unflattering

I agree. So many of the independent shops round here sell those one size shapeless linen "Italian look" clothes with huge necklines that really only fit if you are a size 16 or 18. I swerve those.

Do Italians really wear shapeless ill fitting linen?

Edited

The 'Made in Italy' shapeless stuff you see in a lot of UK shops is not really sold in Italy and the fact it is 'Made in Italy' is very misleading. It's all made in Italy yes, but by Chinese companies who have opened factories here in Italy using very poor quality materials.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 01/08/2025 13:16

The puffed sleeves scream 'mutton dressed as lamb' to me.

I have a rule never to accept style tips from anyone using that ageist, sexist and misogynistic expression.

This.

There is enough misogyny and ageism in the world without it being seen as a good thing on a largely womens’ site.

I was so happy when pretty summer dresses came back. Prior to that it was really hard to get a nice summer dress, except for the odd shapeless linen type mentioned above. I love wearing dresses. It's just one hit, no co-ordinating or tucking things in. They are also by far the coolest thing to wear in the heat. Seeing everyone in bright summer colours is also a joy.

I love my dresses, l tend to live in dresses. They are cooler than shorts in the summer and for me give a better line. They are also stylish.

No ugly dresses in my wardrobe. And on a recent visit there were lots of dresses in Paris too. UK bon but l used to live there.

I’m the same. I pretty much live in dresses although not maxis as 1)I’m tall and 2)I have great legs so prefer to distract people with my legs in the (vain) hope they don’t notice my slowly appearing wrinkles. 😛

I used to live in East Asia and wore dresses all the time. They’re ideal in the heat/humidity and they look chic. The only time I regretted a dress was when I was commandeered by a (male) friend into climbing ladders to trim his bushes (slight snigger) and put up snake fencing when he’d invited me round for a cup of tea. Dress was appropriate for tea drinking but not ideal wear for snake fencing. 😂Luckily I’m back living in London now so snake fencing isn’t a requirement.

Daffodilsarefading · 01/08/2025 13:52

Coincidently I’m wearing denim shorts and a white t shirt now. I have been gardening though.
Would get changed if I was going out.

Don't tell anyone about that dress! I only bought it a couple of weeks ago and haven't had a chance to wear it yet! First time I have ever had a maxi dress because most of them swamp me and have far too big a pattern. FF finally achieved the impossible and creates one that flatters a petite person.

I like shorts and a vest and walking sandals but not in a city ( although Bermuda shorts could work with a shirt). I also wouldn’t wear flip flops in the city either - however fashionable they’re deemed to be. )
I don’t think women in the U.K. are particularly stylish as a collective but there’s quite a diversity of style and a great deal of freedom to wear what you want. My Swedish friend has commented on how judgemental everyone is about clothing in Sweden which is why they’re all in their neutral uniforms… terrified of being judged. Her friends enjoy people watching in London because of the diversity.
Women in North America are not that stylish either outside of a big city. Maybe somewhere in the US there’s a British woman banging on about their clamdiggers and rhinestone t shirts but I can’t imagine they are - we tend to have better manners.

I always get a mental image of 'clamdiggers' as tight sweaty crotch trousers.

You think people should wear what they like, but judge coloured hair, high waisted jeans and 'chavvy' trainers?

I'm mostly over flowery print dresses but it's good that people hang on to dresses for a long time to counteract all the fast fashion. I've had to replace mine because of weight loss. And dresses suit a lot of people who are different shapes and sizes and are comfortable in warmer weather, plus they are good for many different occasions. Unlike shorts and a "tank".

In a few weeks I'll weary of summer clothes and start to look forward to skirts and boots.

mediumdicketh · 01/08/2025 14:30

id prefer going back to the days were the internet wasnt around so people got on with there own business and life and kept their judgement to themselves instead of slandering every single thing about peoples choices and having a gang of old women or young women and men commenting on peoples one life choices. people should wear what they want wear a rainbow suit let ur rolls hang out janice we all end up in the same gown or urn. and one day when these people are on their deathbeds maybe they will realise how differently their lives, thoughts, feelings, decisions should of been led instead of caring about strangers choice of life, fashion, choices. its stupid and a ridiculous way of wasting precious time. miserable.

Brightyellowspyrograph · 01/08/2025 14:32

Yes yes yes
If you are meaning prairie dresses oh my goodness I totally agree. When they first came out in the US lots of people took the p!ss by posing bare foot or in wellies clutching chickens to their chests ...and then the blokes got in on it. The photos are hilarious.
The maxi dress with no straps was another one and the grecian drape dress calamity.
There are fab flarey trousers and dungarees and flared jeans and dresses that don't look like you should be running down the hills to the.Little House on the prairie theme song.
And then I think about what's happening in the US with women's rights being stripped and I do wonder if this is all part of the plan.....make us look like its 1880s then maybe we will behave like it is.
