I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

I too am confused about the reference to ME+EM - is that the shop you meant to call out OP? It’s hardly somewhere that’s accessible for the whole country to shop - a dress is over £200!

How is describing something as ‘ugly’ funny? Jokes need a punchline.

It reminds me of gaslighting bullies who always reply "I was only joking".

Basically, they are just showing lack of remorse.

@EconomyClassRockstar having spent six weeks in the US, I noticed there was very little imagination regarding daily dressing for women in the summer and most opted for shorts and a vest or t-shirt and often looked very trashy. Seems to be a standard uniform for US women.
I would much prefer to see women in floral dresses of varying style than bog standard shorts and top.

It's quite funny how disparaging. She was about women wearing dresses when she's wearing a vest and shorts and a fake tan and great shoes, she says.

She really think she's shit hot. She's wearing the most unimagitive and trashy clothing possible.

TonTonMacoute · 01/08/2025 11:41

I agree with OP. I get floaty summery dresses, they are cool and comfortable in hot weather.

However, a lot of this season's dresses are incredibly ugly and unflattering. Some of them even look crap on the models, and even worse on 'real' women.

Of these the middle one is just about okay because of the fabric, the other two I wouldn't be seen dead in. The puffed sleeves scream 'mutton dressed as lamb' to me.

I have a very important question to ask about UK style....
NigelPonsonbySmallpiece · 01/08/2025 11:42

I wouldn’t judge anyone for what they wear in the supermarket.

I’ll judge the OP for thinking she’s a purveyor of high fashion while espousing a tank and shorts as a better look over dresses and sneering at the dress wearers. If she’d just started a thread saying she likes to wear a vest and shorts when it’s hot I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid 🤷‍♀️.

There’s nothing wrong with that outfit if that’s what someone likes. But let’s face it it’s hardly an edgy fashion choice is it? I simply don’t get how someone who “boasts” about that ensemble can be Judging others.

edited for a bonkers autocorrect

You shouldn't care what someone thinks if you are happy that's all that matters. People will always have an opinion as long as you feel good ignore the haters.

I don't care. That's what I was saying. I will wear what I want and always have done.

Daffodilsarefading · 01/08/2025 11:47

Foolsgold read what I posted.
It explains my twopenarth.
If it’s fine to criticise women wearing floral dresses then it is equally as fine to criticise women wearing shorts and a vest.

Paganpentacle · 01/08/2025 11:48

EconomyClassRockstar · 01/08/2025 00:15

In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!

We cant all wear short to work.
Appreciate you were here on a holiday but frankly its been extremely hot and we've reached a point whereby we don't actually GAF

I totally get your tone and your post was funny, OP, especially the pitchfork reference! American gothic. I was bemused by the dresses when they appeared in the shops but they have been around at least a year. If you are an avid watcher of the culture wars, as I am, you will recognise this style as "Tradwife" clobber. It is a rejection of the slutty, revealing, clingy dresses lots of young women wear and it is a rejection of the casual, sloppy, comfy sports clothing lots of young people wear. And, far from being designed for fat blobby English roses, as one poster charged you with insinuating, this style is designed for waif-like figures; you are supposed to be drowned in the dresses. It is also not designed for milddle aged or older women, really. You might be carrying a neat pregnancy bump under there, while you shop at the market for additions to the food you grew at home on the farm (or allotment for Brits!) It is an American import, as most fashion is. But I admit to having a couple of the dresses, even though I am middle aged and not at all trad - they suit some occasions. Fashion is a funny business but it is just that - a business. Some of the posters on here seem to think it is a refleection of their self worth. Ignore them.

BurntBroccoli · 01/08/2025 11:53

I’d love to wear shorts out and about but I hate my legs as they have a couple of veins on the back.
I usually wear loose flowy trousers and vest top.
I’m also trying to phase out the floral stuff in my wardrobe as I feel it’s a bit aging on me.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 01/08/2025 11:53

I suppose part of the reason floral dresses have been around a while is that high summer in the UK is so short. Summer clothes last me for years because I only wear them for about 12 weeks of the year.

theemmadilemma · 01/08/2025 11:58

NY City or State?

If the City then you're used to decent style. Outside of London and any maybe Manchester the level of fashion quickly diminishes into, well, floral dresses and white trainers with denim jackets. Per the standard of the last, ummm, 4 years maybe?

PistachioTiramisu · 01/08/2025 12:02

Foolsgold74 · 01/08/2025 11:03

What exactly don't you 'get'?

Too much flappy material round your legs - too clingy in the main round largish tummies!

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 01/08/2025 12:03

thatsgotit · 01/08/2025 10:56

Genuine question, does it matter if it looks obvious? I mean, people with makeup on aren't supposed to look like they're not wearing any...

It's simply not a look I like. I also think "tanned legs" looks odd when face, arms and neck aren't tanned, but I generally don't find tans attractive.

Sundaymorningbrunch · 01/08/2025 12:04

FfaCoff · 01/08/2025 00:54

Well yeah, if your idea of a joke is to insult an entire group of people but preface it with 'lighthearted' I wouldn't attempt that again..

Interesting that you really didn't like it when it was done to you! Would it have been better received if that poster claimed it was 'lighthearted'?

I Completely agree with you!

Daffodilsarefading · 01/08/2025 12:05

Don’t ever go to Venice op, you will faint at the number of women wearing long, floaty dresses. Most of whom are being filmed for their insta pages.

Anyhow, I agree that if the op had phrased her initial post along the lines of, I’m visiting the uk and was fascinated by the number of women wearing long, floral dresses. Is this a trend in the uk now? Just wondering as where I’m from it tends to be religious women who wear this type of thing, and then only on Sundays.

This is so tedious. According to some posters on MN there seems to be nothing which can safely be worn except by the (largely mythical) tall, slim, 6' , size 6, teenage model.

Yes, that would have been better, then a good style discussion would follow.

Norwegianwood35 · 01/08/2025 12:08

Does it matter if women want to wear floral dresses?

If more people were less judgmental about what people were wearing maybe, just maybe there would be less clothes filling landfills.

OP you do you.

They do look hideous and old fashioned. I wouldn't be caught in a flowery dress. My daughter will go from calling me an old hag to an old granny.

That's the problem I think. A lot of the floral dresses are just so frumpy looking

Fair dos. I agree re some parts of the body tanned and others not (even though I've been known to do it myself 😄).

Okthenguys · 01/08/2025 12:16

I’m not British (or American or European!) but I personally love how British women work floral dresses. There are so many different styles, prints and looks, somehow they manage to put an individual spin on quite a simple basic. I’m not a fan of criticizing people’s personal style - when someone feels comfortable in an outfit they look good. The floral dress/trainer/jacket combo is fine - don’t wear it if you don’t like it 🤷🏾‍♀️

Yes, those dresses are awful. Like several PP my summer dresses are years old because they hardly get worn. My favourite maxi came from BHS, which went into administration 9 years ago. I have a couple of Seasalt summer dresses that are a few years old, the Uniqlo airism one that is beloved by a lot of people and a couple of others, and this Fatface one which has garnered a lot of compliments:

Admittedly, the use of ugly dresses was way funnier in my head....

Ha ha, you all look like SHIT! LOL. Do you look like shit because you're all so stupid you can't think of an alternative or are you all just hideously lacking on style. ROFL.
You can see why your 'light-hearted' thread hasn't quite landed, can't you??

PrissyGalore · 01/08/2025 12:35

I used to wear floral dresses but now I think they look twee and dated. Plain black or chocolate dresses are in my wardrobe now. I keep getting adverts for Nobody’s Child though-the latest is some horrid think with a deep round neckline and elbow sleeves-even the model looks like a German milkmaid. So yes, there are some shockers around, OP-but I’d say the average woman probs looks better in a midi than tank and shorts.
