I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

I wear exclusively long dresses in warm weather. Not exclusively floral though, other patterns and even ( gasp) plain are also acceptable. I have pasty legs and easily burnable skin so fake tan looks just that so no point, also once I got past 40 shorts looked shit on whereas dresses look pretty and classy. I usually get compliments on them, although I guess no one says ' too many people are wearing dresses it's really weird ' to your face!

notacooldad · 01/08/2025 11:04

Lol at 'everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂'
I love my ugly dresses!. Well they aren't ugly to me!

Ticktockwatchclock · 01/08/2025 11:06

@EconomyClassRockstar having spent six weeks in the US, I noticed there was very little imagination regarding daily dressing for women in the summer and most opted for shorts and a vest or t-shirt and often looked very trashy. Seems to be a standard uniform for US women.
I would much prefer to see women in floral dresses of varying style than bog standard shorts and top.

In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!

Sounds basic.

Boring, even.

Ugly dress over that, any day.

I must have just read the wrong ones 😬

I tend to find that when the opening post is deliberately nasty (even when the OP pretends to be ‘just joking’ or ‘lighthearted’), the thread tends to follow the OP’s tone.

In my view that’s clearly what has happened here. The OP’s ‘WTF’ response to a similar post directed at her is quite funny, though.

I don't think I've owned a dress for 30 years (except my wedding dress!) - just don't get them at all!

What exactly do you struggle with understanding that a lot of women prefer to wear a dress in warm weather? Confused

Re Japanese style. I am a big fan of Uniqlo and always pop into their shop when I am visiting DD as she is lucky enough to have one where she lives.

However, their colours are so dowdy and there aren't many that suit my jewel winter colouring.

Wow sounds amazing. I bet you were stopped in the street by seriously impressed brits wherever you ventured. I hope they managed to contain themselves.

sparkleghost · 01/08/2025 11:14

I love a flowery dress, especially vintage! I also love other clothes and styles (bright pinnies, jumpsuits, a bold print), as I imagine many of the other women you saw enjoying the sun in a pretty dress do too. I wouldn’t ever wear fake tan, I’m happy as I am. Shorts and a vest are for the garden or holidays. I’ve got a 2 year old so ample opportunity to dress down at home when I’m getting covered in paint, food and god knows what else!

I dress to please myself, whether that’s for comfort or to look good - not for other people. I really recommend you try it OP, it’s quite liberating. You’d spend far less time worrying about what everybody else is wearing.

I live in NY! There are seriously nowhere near the amount of women wearing dresses, except on a Sunday, here as there are there. It blew my mind because everyone was so hot and bothered and complaining they were hot and bothered and I was just like, "So why are you all wearing such long bloody dresses?!!"

I wear dresses all year round because I have a condition that makes wearing trousers very uncomfortable. I dont have the luxury of thinking about fashion most of the time.

Is it that shocking that women wear dresses though? Really?

thatsgotit · 01/08/2025 11:17

Bgasfraudfraud · 01/08/2025 09:49

Depends how old OP is. Shorts and a tank top out and about is not a good look on anyone over 50!

I still wear shorts at home but if I am out and about I wear long dresses, below knee skirts or crop trousers.

Do you live in Benidorm OP? Having so much flesh on display out and about is a Benidorm thing.

I’m 57 and here is a recent pic of my legs in cutoffs - gasp - out and about! 😱 Am I allowed to continue wearing these or must I immediately get a grip and reach for the Chums catalogue?(!)

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 01/08/2025 11:20

I actually agree and I have dressed in dresses only for about 15 years. However to me these dresses are like the dresses my mum used to wear in the 80s to cover the fact she was a larger lady. I think for me these dresses make me look frumpy in the summer. Not so much in the winter as there’s something about a jacket being over them breaks it up, add some boots and you’ve gone from frumpy to funky. I tend to not go with flowery. This year for summer it’s wides leg trousers and best tops.

You look good your legs are better than mine. Although I like my legs they do look a bit chunky in shorts.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2025 11:24

I'm 66 and still have decent legs. My knees, however, are a different thing entirely.

WTF?!

Jesus Christ, remind me never to attempt a joke on MN again.

How is describing something as ‘ugly’ funny? Jokes need a punchline.

The DRESSES were described as ugly! and I agree, having struggled all summer to find one that isn't...

Beachtastic · 01/08/2025 10:57

The "vipers" comment was more about the way OP is being treated...

Nope. The part about MN posters judging what you wear in the supermarket?

Wbeezer · 01/08/2025 11:31

I’m not against floaty floral dresses per se. But I’ve noticed a distinct decline in the quality of the prints used from a design point of view. I think it’s because the software for producing digital patterns and prints is so easy to use that fast fashion companies don’t need to employ proper printed textile designers to design fabrics, every possible hideous colour combo seems to be tried out and the patterns are sometimes weirdly spaced or rotated. It stands out a mile to me. I personally don’t wear patterns ( apart from polka dots or stripes) but I can appreciate the work of Laura Ashley for example.

Ah, OK, I see what you mean. Well, I haven't RTFT and was just feeling a bit intimidated by the vehemence of many posts 😬 I just can't imagine getting so worked up about discussing clothes!

Eh? I know that. The ‘something’ in my post refers to ‘dresses’ from the OP’s post, quite obviously. Did you misread and think I wrote ‘someone’?

My point stands. Describing something as ugly does not a joke make.

dynamiccactus · 01/08/2025 11:33

Totally agree OP - most dresses are awful. You'd have to pay me to wear them!

I don't think it's a new thing though, I don't think most dresses are particularly flattering unless you are super-slim.

However, I wear Hotter sandals so I am a total frump.

I completely misread your post 🤣 as "How does calling SOMEONE ugly..."

Well, that's fine if you haven't read the whole thread, but most people are making the point not to judge if you choose to wear a dress, or if you don't comply with the dress code of the OP, a vest and shorts. She claims floral dresses are ugly.
Also - vipers? Women are entitled to opinions, it's only about clothes. Why are we routinely called names for doing so?

...but your feet aren't wrecked! 😊

dynamiccactus · 01/08/2025 11:37

I don't like vests either. Especially if women have saggy boobs and don't have bras on underneath. I'm not sure how they can even be comfortable.

They are from running ;) but at least I don't add to the problem with my everyday shoes!
