Ok, so i fell in love with this dress resisted but then it appeared in the sale really cheap so succumbed. Now i have it i wonder if its a bit dressy and perhaps young ( im 63 but a young 63 not too haggard of face yet) was thinking of wearing it next weekend on a river boat party, what do you think?
im a size 14 / 16

I wouldn't pay nigh on £500 for someone that would make me look like I'm en route to being beheaded.

Brilliant I needed a giggle 😂

Maddy70 · 31/07/2025 17:10

I love it. If it suits you wear it!

I do like a white or cream dress and I think they are actually quite tricky to find. I had my eye on this Boden one. Now in the sale. Different style from yours, OP but maybe a bit more structured.

This one is much nicer than the OP one imo.

I wouldn’t put black sandals with a cream frock. I’d put gold or tan. Tan sandals, wooden jewellery would be great.

I agree with PP who described it as ‘droopy’ but it is also feminine and dreamy, so if that’s what you wanted it’s perfect.

I always say age isn’t relevant in general but certainly not for that dress.

Oh, and New Look clothes have come a long way. They wash well, and good value, and great for Tall lengths. I wear loads of NL stuff albeit not the more fashionable things as it’s usually not my style.

Agree, OP's idea of gold sandals would work better than black. The new way to do black is to use it sparingly as a fine, elegant accent - flat pointy t-bars, small top-handle handbag, black sculptural earrings kind of thing. The chunky-boot-&-biker-jacket ship has long since sailed!

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 31/07/2025 17:36

Its lovely

GoldDuster · 31/07/2025 17:55

If you like it, then there's your answer OP. Have fun.

Would absolutley not want to spend he thick end of £500 on a black tshirt material shroud frillathon.

redriding1976 · 31/07/2025 18:18

Love it !! You're only going to be older tomorrow 🤷‍♀️

Surely (speaking from experience) everyone who is 63 looks the way a 63 year old looks?

It seems so odd and … retrograde to write I’m 63 but.

Being 63 doesn’t require apology or excuse or an attempt to separate oneself from other humans of the same age.

The idea of the dress is fine, but that one looks cheap.

I’ve had my eye on this one …

Cecilie Bahnsen dress

People of the same age haven’t all aged to the same degree. Some people naturally have plumper skin and less wrinkles, and/or less sagging, less grey etc…. Some of us look younger some older and everything in between.

I’ve said all that but there’s no shame in ageing anyway…

Just noticed this dress - which maybe doesn’t have quite the carefree innocence of the one you’ve chosen, @AnchorWHAT, (the fabric seems heavier, but not better) but there may be other things you like on the site:

Albaray dress

Thanks but the
Cheapy is more me and more my budget sadly

It's lovely! I'd definitely go unfeminine with the shoes for contrast. I think looks fun to wear.

I find new look sometimes has clothes which are really well cut (is that the correct term?) but not very well made. I'd love then to do a slightly more expensive line with less polyester.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 31/07/2025 20:51

Britneyfan · 31/07/2025 13:13

I think it looks lovely and isn’t super dressy or overly young in style. I agree at that price point the quality of the fabric and cut may not be ideal, I wouldn’t normally look in that shop myself for clothes, however if that’s your budget, that’s your budget! And I think it looks pretty good for the money but maybe may not wash/wear that well long term sort of thing. I think you should get it and I’d wear it with chunky boots unless it’s too hot for that in which case either the trainers or sandals you mention would be fine. Perfect for a river boat party I think!

Seconded all you said.

ladygindiva · 31/07/2025 20:54

I think it's lovely but id be buying the blue

Beachtastic · 31/07/2025 21:35

Charabanc · 31/07/2025 16:16

It's giving Miss Havisham vibes

That's what I love about it!

Nice choice OP, have lots of fun at the party. I think it's smashing and one of the few dresses shared on MN that I actually like the look of.

Rainydayinlondon · 31/07/2025 23:08

I think it’s lovely and fairly unusual. Can’t go wrong at £15

Id wear brown strappy sandals/delicate fisherman sandals with it

Possibly not the fisherman's sandals? They aren't ever flattering to anyone. (IMHO only of course).

I'm not sure why Miss Havisham vibes is necessarily a bad thing.

Ok , the being stood up on your wedding day wasn't great but aside from that given how many appalling men there are around [see current thread about the scummy boyfriend meeting parents for first time] maybe not necessarily all bad.

And Miss Havisham was rich and had all those people, Pip, Estella, Mr Jaggers, numerous relatives dancing in attendance on her.

Clarinet1 · 01/08/2025 06:57

I think it’s fine for the boat party in terms of the style. Like a PP I would look drowned in it because I’m short and dumpy but if you’re tallish and slim it will look great. I agree with accessories in tan or gold but what about a big, large-brimmed hat, possibly in straw, to keep the sun glare from the water off?

Very flammable, Miss Havisham's dress though. Possibly polyester too.

ZaZathecat · 01/08/2025 09:24

I think you'll look grand

MagnificentBastard · 01/08/2025 09:43

I’d butch it up with clumpy boots and a leather jacket; it could easily veer into Miss Havisham territory otherwise.

Daffodilsarefading · 01/08/2025 10:35

Bargain price, buy it.

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 01/08/2025 13:25

Goodness some of you are hard of understanding. (And so literal!) The OP asked if the dress was too dressy and too ‘young’. I was making the point that I’m a similar age and was considering a similarly ruffled dress. So obviously don’t think the dress she liked was ‘too young’.

I didn’t at any point suggest she should buy the same dress.

Hmm
