Ok, so i fell in love with this dress resisted but then it appeared in the sale really cheap so succumbed. Now i have it i wonder if its a bit dressy and perhaps young ( im 63 but a young 63 not too haggard of face yet) was thinking of wearing it next weekend on a river boat party, what do you think?
im a size 14 / 16

How does it look on you, @AnchorWHAT? (I mean, is it as you imagined it would be?) And have you tried it with all your footwear? Clumpy boots seem the stylish choice, assuming they’re wearable on the boat.

(In case it needs saying, I haven’t bought the CB frock because it still hasn’t reached an acceptable sale price …)

Edited

You can safely bet it wont come down to £15 like mine 😀

The material looks a bit scratchy and sweaty but I really like the style and the colour.

Its actually quite soft, i was worried it would be as you suggest

Comefromaway · 31/07/2025 13:34

I'd dress it down with boots and a biker jacket or dress it up with tan sandals and gold jewellery.

But I agree the material looks sweaty (polyester often is)

Edited

Extra deoderant it is then

I sort of like it in theory but from the front it does remind me of a nightie my mum had in the 70s.

😂 think i had one too

My worry is that it’s quite a droopy dress in a droopy colour iykwim but that might just be my prejudice as I cannot wear that colour.

it’s much fussier than I would wear myself (similar age) but if you like it I think it’s perfect for a boat party. Can I come?

Only if you keep secrets as birthday person has no idea

Quirkswork · 31/07/2025 13:39

I can't tell you how horrific I would look in this (being on the shorter and more rotund size).🤣 And why have they styled it with those shoes. No wonder the model looks pissed off. And it's £480!!

That's the other dress btw. Not yours OP!!!

Piffle11 · 31/07/2025 13:45

I like it, OP. Go for it x

DramaAlpaca · 31/07/2025 13:49

I'm tall, reasonably slim (and 61!) and I like the dress. I sometimes like a bit of a ruffle, and would style it with very unfussy accessories. The only thing that puts me off is that it's polyester, and because of that I wouldn't buy it. I only wear natural fibres these days, otherwise I get very sweaty and that's never a good look.

I really don't like the Cecilie Bahnsen one linked, it's shapeless - and €550!!

DeLaRuiz · 31/07/2025 13:56

I think the Cecile B dress must have been suggested as joke. Surely.

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 31/07/2025 13:02

Surely (speaking from experience) everyone who is 63 looks the way a 63 year old looks?

It seems so odd and … retrograde to write I’m 63 but.

Being 63 doesn’t require apology or excuse or an attempt to separate oneself from other humans of the same age.

The idea of the dress is fine, but that one looks cheap.

I’ve had my eye on this one …

I wouldn't pay nigh on £500 for someone that would make me look like I'm en route to being beheaded.

Oh what a lovely surprise for the birthday person. Have a fab time!

Waterbaby41 · 31/07/2025 14:41

If you like the dress, buy and wear it - whatever your age!! Me - I hate it, would never wear it whatever the price or age I am!!

Rattytouille · 31/07/2025 14:45

OP, it’s lovely and go for it.

I know lots of people who drop £500 on a dress and still look crap, and many who shop in New Look and look fantastic.

Enjoy

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/07/2025 15:59

I'm not a fan, sorry. It's droopy and depressing and 100% polyester. It looks like cos-play for the heroine of a gothic novel running around in her nightie in a 1970s film version.

None of this has anything to do with your age though.

TinderFan · 31/07/2025 16:07

Would you consider it in the blue? I think it’s much nicer in that shade, and a tad nautical! 😊

Charabanc · 31/07/2025 16:16

It's giving Miss Havisham vibes

You’d pay £486 to wear a dreary sack?

Themaghag · 31/07/2025 16:30

Your dress looks very Boho OP - but I think it would be a great buy for anyone who likes the Boho look and suits it. As other posters have said, it could be dressed down with trainers or boots or made more glam with metallic sandals and gold jewellery. And if it's something that you don't expect to wear very often, the quality doesn't really matter very much. And as for polyester - well frankly, I much prefer it to linen, which is the work of the devil because it creases as soon as you look at it and when you get hot, it gets horribly damp, creases even more and loses its shape into the bargain. IMO no one ever looks smart in linen - just twice as large as they actually are!

MyMilchick · 31/07/2025 16:31

It's not overly dressy at all, I like it OP

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 31/07/2025 15:55

Just noticed this dress - which maybe doesn’t have quite the carefree innocence of the one you’ve chosen, @AnchorWHAT, (the fabric seems heavier, but not better) but there may be other things you like on the site:

Albaray dress

I prefer the OPs choice and it's a fraction of the price

SausageRoll2020 · 31/07/2025 16:40

The thoughts which came to mind when I clicked on the link were:

  1. It looks really cheap
  2. It's a bit Miss Havisham
  3. It reminds me of those pillow cases that have a ruffle all around the outside

It might look a bit better on a curvier body as it's very shapeless on the model but I'm not sure if there's any way to hide how cheap the fabric looks.

SoScarletItWas · 31/07/2025 16:41

I wouldn’t put black sandals with a cream frock. I’d put gold or tan. Tan sandals, wooden jewellery would be great.

I agree with PP who described it as ‘droopy’ but it is also feminine and dreamy, so if that’s what you wanted it’s perfect.

I always say age isn’t relevant in general but certainly not for that dress.

Oh, and New Look clothes have come a long way. They wash well, and good value, and great for Tall lengths. I wear loads of NL stuff albeit not the more fashionable things as it’s usually not my style.
