It was Ingrid who gave it and the accompanying parure specifically to Fred in her will, so that the future Crown Princess would have a tiara in Danish colours fit for a future Queen. I wonder if a new tradition will be made of that.

TwerkingRoyalNotWorkingRoyal · 14/07/2025 20:32

I think? Although I could be wrong...vaguely remember another possible route!

Ingrid wore it for her whole life as a Danish Royal as her mother-in-law gave her the parure after she married Crown Prince Frederik - I presume she thought it a very appropriate gift given Ingrid was also a Swedish princess marrying a Danish future King…

Maireas · 14/07/2025 20:37

Thanks, @Serenster , also for the pictures. It's a beautiful parure, I remember seeing Mary wear it. Do we know where Desiree Clary got it from? I'm wondering - a French aristocrat?.

Napoleon apparently gave his Marshalls plenty of money so they and their wives would be suitably splendid for his coronation!

Yes, and like @TwerkingRoyalNotWorkingRoyal says, fortuitously in the Danish colours!

Yes, got totally mixed up. It was Ingrid's favourite; she wore it all throughout her life and then bequeathed it to Fred, so Daisy has never worn it.

Did he? Very Bonaparte. Those Coronation paintings by David just show the grandeur, don't they?

It was made for Napoleon's Coronation, I believe. As @Serenster said, Napoleon liked everyone in the court to be properly bedazzled.

So Daisy never wore it? That's a shame. Daisy would wear it well!

Thanks, both!
Now I need to find out why Max has that stunning Stuart tiara....

I'll post my favourite programme about jewels for anyone who's interested (have linked to it a few times over the years but some newer members might like to watch it). It also explains quite well some of the relationships and familial ties between various Royal Houses of Europe. As well as how the huge Braganza tiara came to Sweden.

That's fascinating, @Lunde . Was this through his connections to Napoleon? Or was he just a clever operator to get adopted by an elderly king?

Bernadotte was one of Napoleon's top Generals - had risen from being the son of a country town lawyer.

After the disastrous War of 1809 where Sweden lost their territories in Finland and Russia the existing RF was exiled and the new monarch had no (legitimate) children and the country was forced into closer ties with Napoleon. An envoy was sent to gain Napoleon's approval for a new heir (a Danish Prince IIRC) however in circumstances that remain murky - he arrived back having offered the role to John Bernadotte.

However if Napoleon thought he was gaining a puppet regent - he was soon proved wrong as Jean proved most independent.

Maireas · 14/07/2025 20:45

Thanks, @TwerkingRoyalNotWorkingRoyal . That would be great. This is fascinating.

Did anyone else see the programme where QE2 talked about the State Crown? She explained all the jewels, the Black Prince's Ruby, Mary Queen of Scots' pearls etc. so interesting

That's a great story, @Lunde . A canny man indeed.

It mostly focuses on the Scandinavian countries, but some interesting tidbits about other royals too and quite a bit of commentary from Margrethe, Mary and Silvia. I like Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark's stories and insights.

Yes, and Granny's chips! Or was that another programme.

Estelle is growing up very fast at 13 - she'll soon be taller than her parents.

I was thinking the same, very tall. I love her blue dress.

Was Granny's chips in that programme? Got to love Mary of Teck, the ultimate magpie.

It might've been a different one. So funny, those huge stonking 'chips'.

Estelle might not grow much more - I pretty much stopped growing at 13, I was the same height as mum by that point (and by no means a shorty at 5'9"). A few girls that were languishing behind me on the height charts had late growth spurts and passed me at 15 which meant for the first time since starting school at 4 I wasn't the tallest girl in the year for the last 18 months.

There is a 1950s romantic drama called Desiree, featuring Jean Simmons as the eponymous heroine and an utterly gorgeous Marlon Brando as Napoleon. It's probably on shaky grounds historically but their acting elevates it. It's occasionally on the BBC on a weekend afternoon.
