I was surprised about Charlotte wearing nail varnish too. I know most girls her age wear it, and I don’t have an issue with it at all, but most boys George’s age wouldn’t have to wear a suit & tie in 30 degree heat if they went to Wimbledon. They dress the children so formally it was unusual to see the informality of the nails.

You need to read the whole thread to understand. Plus this is S&B, not criticism of the Wales' parenting.

Yes, but most boys going to Wimbledon wouldn’t be sat in the Royal Box..

As PPs have said, George was just wearing what is required by Wimbledon for the Royal Box. From the Wimbledon website:

”Protocol - dress is smart, suits/jacket and tie, etc. “

Exactly. One more time.... George is following the dress code 😁

What's informal about painted nails? Or formal about unpainted nails?

Quite.

I like her green dress, although perhaps not with the additional pink frill at the bottom. Estelle looks nice in blue.

I love that dress! Not a fan of the earrings with it though.

Cassiope · 14/07/2025 17:49

Not an aesthetic I can parse, I just don't know or understand the cultural tradition it comes from. I'm guessing that Mum’s dress is related in some way to Swedish national dress and although Dad just looks a bit schoolteacher to me (functional pockets on the jacket!), I suspect my Swedish counterpart would be even more perplexed by one of those photos of British royals with dad in kilt, sporran etc.

Maireas · 14/07/2025 17:54

@Cassiope it's interesting that you get that vibe from Victoria's dress, I hadn't noticed that. I wonder if there is a nod to national dress? Daniel has definitely gone down the conservative route. I like Silvia's outfit.

I guess it could be very loosely inspired by. Both Victoria and Sofia like this sort of floral, rather bohemian style. Madeleine goes more toward the glam.

Cassiope · 14/07/2025 18:03

My guess is based on vague (very vague) recollections of a frieze with flags and pictures of male and female national costumes and could be completely wrong...

Maireas · 14/07/2025 18:06

Perhaps it's the cut of the dress? It looks a bit folksy. They sometimes do all appear in national dress, don't they? I think we've seen those images on here.

It is reminiscent so it's a good shout.

Not keen on CPV's dress or her earrings, which would have been gorgeous if they were much smaller.
Love her happy smiley face though.

I was converted to cameos by Crown Princess Victoria’s amazing Napoleonic-era wedding tiara. Just stunning - and she was beautifully styled to make the tiara the focal point of her outfit.

For a family with no royal or aristocratic heritage (before Jean Bernadotte was declared heir to the Swedish throne in very murky circumstances in 1810) the Bernadottes managed to snap up some fantastic jewels.

Surely George will already be wearing a shirt and tie daily for his school uniform? And if he’s not wearing a blazer already, he soon will be. This is literally a uniform for him now.

I remember Kate saying once that the clothes that the children wear to formal engagements are completely different to what their wear "off duty"

Maireas · 14/07/2025 20:22

That's fascinating, @Lunde . Was this through his connections to Napoleon? Or was he just a clever operator to get adopted by an elderly king?

Having Desirée Clary (Napoleon’s fiancé before he met Josephine), and Empress Josephine’s granddaughter Josephine Leuchtenberg marry into the Bernadotte line definitely helped! Although Desirée’s ruby tiara ended up with Queen Mary in Denmark…

Yes, we've seen that on birthday pictures, haven't we? Relaxing in Norfolk, usually.

How did it end up there? Was Mary of Denmark like Mary of Teck?

OP posts:
TwerkingRoyalNotWorkingRoyal · 14/07/2025 20:32

It came with Queen Ingrid - Daisy's mum - who was a Swedish Princess by birth.

TwerkingRoyalNotWorkingRoyal · 14/07/2025 20:32

I think? Although I could be wrong...vaguely remember another possible route!

Oh right, the current Mary of Denmark. Right. Sorry, I thought we were still talking about days of yore!

It was gained by the Swedish royal family family when Desiree Clary brought it with her as the wife of Marshal Bernadotte - she had worn the jewels at the coronation of Napoleon and Josephine! It was handed down from Swedish Queen to Swedish Queen until one of them gave it as a wedding gift to her daughter Lovisa, who married the King of Denmark. Rubies and diamonds being a well-suited gift for a new Queen of Denmark. It’s stayed with the Danish Royal family ever since, and was the main tiara worn as Crown Princess by now Queen Mary of Denmark.
