If anyone did care, I'd be pleased to piss them off as I wouldn't want to be friends with such a shallow and ridiculous person. Life's too short

Funny isn’t it, you do what you want and don’t give a shit what others think, their feelings don’t matter, you are the most important person who’s opinion matters. This is the reoccurring issue. It’s the brides day, and you should care what she thinks.

So many on here ‘don’t care’.

So many others do.

I know which side I fall on.

Someone who is shallow enough to think it matters that much what colour dress a wedding guest is wearing, especially someone who is enough of a stirrer to try and wind up the bride by telling her their thoughts on it is unlikely to be someone I'd have much in common with.

So yeah, I would he happy not to care about their opinion.

Genuinely asking, is it a traditional rule in England or UK that guests must never wear anything with white in it to a wedding? I'm from a different culture where there's no issue with wearing white have (save wearing an actual wedding dress of course!) i never know whether it's just people on MN being picky or it's a traditional rule of thumb. What is the rational behind it? I've seen some comments before like 'upstaging the bride', i can't honestly see how anyone in that polka dot dress or any dress that isn't a wedding dress would be mistaken for the bride so it makes no sense to me.

popcornpower2025 · 06/07/2025 18:12

It's literally a white dress 🤣

But with plenty of black "sin spots" to indicate lack of bridal purity 😂

I don't really get that it's not suitable!

suzysnowball · 09/07/2025 19:15

No, the bride will think you're taking the piss

Don't be silly. This comment is the only thing taking the piss.

For those that have commented that’s it’s awful, I actually own the dress and really like it 😂 I wore it on a cruise last week and thought I looked quite nice. I won’t be wearing it to the wedding, I knew it was too white, DH made me doubt my judgement.

It looks lovely on you. My only issue would be for a wedding it's very eye catching with the big black spots against white. Standing beside the bride it's the first thing you would notice. You look as though you could wear anything so I'd be inclined to wear something less domineering.
Enjoy the day 😁

There's not caring what the bride thinks (not OK, obviously) and then there's not caring what other guests think in the absence of any actual dress code having been issued. The two are not the same thing at all. I strongly suspect many of the pps on this thread are coming from a place of not having wanted guests in white at their own weddings and/or being people who would automatically judge others for it regardless whether any dress code had been issued or not, and regardless whether the bride herself actually cared. As far as the latter category goes, I'd be pleased to piss them off too.

MNHQ, can we have an eye roll reaction emoji please?

idrinkandiknowthings · 10/07/2025 18:41

It's a lovely dress and nothing like a bridal gown. Who says the bride will be wearing white anyway? I was expecting a friend of mine to but her gown was champagne.

SqueamishHamish · 10/07/2025 21:21

How on earth does that look anything like a wedding dress. Wear it, it's nice

ChaToilLeam · 10/07/2025 21:32

I like it but not for a wedding. Too much white!

Trishyb10 · 10/07/2025 22:39

Its lovely and you look lovely in it is it black or navy spots? Would team it up with the darker bag and shoes, hold your head up high and ignore/feel sorry for the haters x

It looks great on you. Weddings aside, I really like it.

OneKhakiFish · 11/07/2025 00:40

It looks lovely on you, I think it's fine, you could always send a quick photo to your niece if your still unsure

Silvertulips · 11/07/2025 19:08

regardless whether any dress code had been issued or not, and regardless whether the bride herself actually cared

I doubt many wedding issue a dress code. there is one basic code of other females not wearing white. They can choose anything else.

As for not wanting guests to wear white at my wedding. We eloped, no guests. No issues!! I didn’t wear white either.

But I do extend that curtesy to others wedding days.

That’s your prerogative. But ‘no white at weddings’ is a principle some people choose to enshrine while others, including me when I got married, don’t even give it a moment’s thought (also their prerogative). I’m finding it slightly puzzling that you’re so keen to propound your own approach as the only ‘correct’ one to adopt. It’s all subjective.

MyTidyMoose · 11/07/2025 19:35

I'd say too much white. My MIL once told me it was unlucky to wear black & white to a wedding.

FancyCatSlave · 11/07/2025 22:28

I really life I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t wear a dress with white in it to a wedding. A dress that is in a wedding dress style wouldn’t be ok. But literally no sane person is bothered by an “ordinary” (meant vs bridal) dress. It’s only in mumsnet world or Bridezilla domains.

Trallia · 11/07/2025 23:25

Looks good on you. Think the yellow would suit your colouring. Seems like this would be a good excuse to order the yellow version too?

OldMcDonaldHadABigMac · 12/07/2025 08:52

digiwidgy · 06/07/2025 18:42

I would wear it if already owned. That said, it’s an invite, not a summons to a wedding and I won’t be told what I can and cannot wear. It’s a nice summer dress and nothing like a wedding dress.

But the bride hasn't told her what she can/cannot wear. It's just basic, widely known etiquette not to wear a white dress to a wedding. Regardless of its like a wedding dress or not, it's white. And the invite not a summons thing....how arrogant 😂 I know you're probably just parroting a phrase you've heard on mumsnet that you think sounds good/clever but used in regards to a wedding invite....jesus. Weird take.

DappledThings · 12/07/2025 10:08

Yeah, maybe an entirely white dress. One that happens to have a white background but also a pattern all over it doesn't count

cassie2and2 · 13/07/2025 11:07

From the picture it looks to be elegant without being over the top type dress. Is the bride wearing traditional wedding dress? This dress is nothing like a trad. bridal dress. Unless you're mother or mother-in-law of the bride and in the front with the bride in photographs - perfectly acceptable

ruethewhirl · 13/07/2025 14:26

As far as mother of the bride goes, I was in ivory on my wedding day and so was my mum. Oddly enough, the day wasn’t cursed and no one was struck down by a thunderbolt.

Perhaps, but there is a certain etiquette that should be observed, out of respect.

It’s also good to remember that weddings cost a lot of money pp., so deference to the bride, re not wearing a colour she may be wearing, is just good manners.
