I’m sorry, what? If everyone dresses to please themselves, they are all dressing to the same “standard”. How on earth is advice for a floaty skirt or a linen shirt on a hot day (like many on here) “lowering” anything?
I like and participate in sport, and to view sport (which is what Wimbledon is, not a fashion catwalk after all) I would often wear casual, comfortable clothes. Clean, most likely ironed, comfortable and suitable for the weather. (No LOW standards there).
I genuinely don’t understand why you’d think advice to wear a dress that is clearly impractical for the occasion, and likely to reduce you to a sweaty mess, while also necessitating shoes that won’t be comfortable for the walking required around the sporting grounds, is “LOWER”. “Different” standards certainly, but your reply comes off as massively judgy if you genuinely believe, as you state, that everyone should dress to please themselves.
Wear what you like, but I think OP has had a lot of sensible answers based on practicability and not some arbitrary high or low scale.
This whole conversation reeks of snobbery, you should definitely be more excited about the tennis than what you look like on the day or whether it’s a “dressy” occasion. Enjoy the TENNIS you are going to watch.
