Is this dress ok for Wimbledon?

I bought this dress a while ago when it was on offer

Would it be ok for Wimbledon and what shoes and bag would you wear with it? I’m thinking cream but I don’t have either!

I have been a few times, wear whatever makes you comfortable. There will be a lot of walking and unless you are lucky enough to get a seat in the shade, you will be in direct sun for hours. Therefore a hat is a must.

Once we got lovely shady tickets to Centre Court but all the other years we seemed to get seats that were always in the direct sun.

Perfect dress. I always wore a nice dress whenever I went. Remember, never lower yourself to other people’s standards. Dress to please yourself.

I’m sorry, what? If everyone dresses to please themselves, they are all dressing to the same “standard”. How on earth is advice for a floaty skirt or a linen shirt on a hot day (like many on here) “lowering” anything?

I like and participate in sport, and to view sport (which is what Wimbledon is, not a fashion catwalk after all) I would often wear casual, comfortable clothes. Clean, most likely ironed, comfortable and suitable for the weather. (No LOW standards there).
I genuinely don’t understand why you’d think advice to wear a dress that is clearly impractical for the occasion, and likely to reduce you to a sweaty mess, while also necessitating shoes that won’t be comfortable for the walking required around the sporting grounds, is “LOWER”. “Different” standards certainly, but your reply comes off as massively judgy if you genuinely believe, as you state, that everyone should dress to please themselves.

Wear what you like, but I think OP has had a lot of sensible answers based on practicability and not some arbitrary high or low scale.

This whole conversation reeks of snobbery, you should definitely be more excited about the tennis than what you look like on the day or whether it’s a “dressy” occasion. Enjoy the TENNIS you are going to watch.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 06/07/2025 10:16

Lots of people dress up OP.

Dress is beautiful and if you have seats, I'd go for it.
Frida Redknapp wore this Alessandar Rich dress on the first day, so you'll be in good company.

Hmm … the dress in question definitely doesn’t ‘necessitate’ uncomfortable shoes. It would be perfectly fine with trainers or flat sandals or whatever seems suitable to the wearer.

Whataday25 · 06/07/2025 11:47

Gorgeous. I think it would be just right. It might be a bit dressy compared to some people but it’s smart and plain so not over the top,

I would dress up for Wimbledon because I would view it as a special occasion. After all, we are not playing the sport we’re watching it.

I think it would look really cool flats or trainers.

And that’s entirely up to you, but my point is there is no rule, requirement or standard to abide by. I see it as a special occasion too but my brain doesn’t make the link between that and “having” to dress a certain way. And I wouldn’t want to spoil my enjoyment of a special occasion day to meet someone else’s idea of that.

Gorgeous dress and very appropriate. Shorts (unless tailored, with a silk shirt or similar) are really not appropriate. Go for it and enjoy!

Sorry why the hell are shorts not appropriate now? Did someone tell the men?
There is no dress code and the temperature has been over 30 degrees. You are just making up baseless rules! (Personally I wouldn’t as there’s a high chance of sticking to a seat - but not because there is any requirement not to based on some random fashion standards.)

Shorts are definitely the norm at Wimbledon. DH and I were watching on Centre Court this week and were in shorts as were many others. It’s watching a tennis match not a dressy day out.

Fine, so I don’t know about fashion 🤷‍♀️ but I repeat, just wear what you want. My point is that dressing practically for the weather is not somehow “lower” than another outfit. (As a direct response to someone stating it was.) No need to lower or raise your “standards” - the standards are largely in people’s own heads and you will never please them all.

TidyPanda · 06/07/2025 13:05

I always wear a dress to Wimbledon. You can wear what you like, there is a real mix of styles with some people being very casual and others dressed up. Anything goes!

However due to the heat this year, I would only wear a sun dress or something more floaty and cool, especially if you have seats in the sun. I hope you have a great day whatever you wear!

TidyPanda · 06/07/2025 13:07

bendmeoverbackwards · 03/07/2025 15:32

We’re not going till 13th July so I’ll see what the weather is like nearer the time.

Just seen this, so you have seated tickets to the mens finals? Wow, how did you manage that? Very jealous!

We’re in court 1, not centre court. Entered the ballot (as I’ve done for years with no success) and managed to get these!

I love that dress!

Navigatinglife100 · 06/07/2025 13:28

Smart Casual usually. I wore a dress though with white sneakers. (New ones so they were white!).

Research your seat location. We went to the 2022 Mens Final and it was blisteringly hot. We were, by pure luck, on the shady side and under the side edge of the new roof. So we were OK with light clothing and water. I dread what it was like sitting on the opposite side of the court in the direct sunshine.

Bailiwitch · 06/07/2025 13:29

Surely there generally are quite a few spectators for the men’s final, @TidyPanda? (I’m reading in excess of 14,000 but don’t actually know beyond the evidence of my eyes.)

You make it sound as if only half a dozen carefully chosen oligarchs could possibly be there! Grin

I see the OP will be watching Court 1. Even that seats over 12,000.

I won my CC Men's Finals in the 2020 public ballot. They were then postponed by COVID but if I didn't use them in 2022 I'd lose them. When I say "win".... you still pay for them, of course.

We had only lost Mum in May 2022 relatively suddenly and I never thought Dad would want to go and I was expecting to return them for refund. But he said, "hell yes", and thank goodness we did. We had a lovely time and he now is very frail and has dementia.

Enter the ballot is my advice! I've had some decent draws in the past 25 years in the ballot. Men's Quarters, Men's Final Day Court One (we watched the final on Henman Hill and then went into Court One for the Doubles and Vet matches), and Men's Final Centre Court in 2022

Not sure of your point?
Tickets are hard to come by and the ballot is always hugely oversubscribed, so it’s lucky if you get in. Not quite worthy of that level of astonishment is it? It can be hard to get tickets for a premiership football match in a 60k capacity stadium (even though quite a lot of people are there).
Oasis concerts/Glastonbury have quite a lot of people at them but that doesn’t make tickets easy to obtain.

OP have a wonderful day and wear whether you feel happy in 😊

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 06/07/2025 14:56

I won mens singles final tickets the first year I entered the ballot. So did a colleague. It happens.

What on earth are you on about? I merely asked the op how she got the tickets, of course I'm aware there "are quite a few" spectators there but I have never come across anyone who has secured them in the public ballot before. That's great to hear and I will continue to enter every year as I have done unsuccessfully for the last 15 years!

Orange3344 · 06/07/2025 17:22

It's lovely, I'd wear it! I used to camp all night and you really can wear whatever you want, so go for this if you want! Just check as the sun can get so hot, you'll want a hat and maybe a t shirt and shorts to change into in case of extreme hot weather!

Zov · 03/07/2025 11:15

You're gonna get hot in that! It's very dark in colour...

This (pic attached) was how I dressed when I went several years ago.

Those jeans have a good cut - would love to know where they were from...

@TidyPanda I have women's finals tickets through the ballot. I do however get an extra entry as an LTA volunteer.
