Jo Whiley

Every year Jo Whiley always looks so fabulous and healthy. Every year I vow to get my arse in gear and have a mature makeover but every year after watching Glastonbury I’m still an untoned blob. I love her look but fear you need the height and tone to carry it off. Does anyone have clothing / skincare recommendations to start me on my way? (Drags weights out of the wardrobe)

I think she's great, so cool and brilliant at her job. She had a tough time when she had a primetime show and i have so much respect that she went back to her much cooler, music show acknowledging that it wasn't her.

She looks and sounds amazing. I think she runs and trains a lot and just has a natural glow.

Brownbearwhitebear · 29/06/2025 08:33

I’m fascinated about the tanning! I find JW a bit irritating but can’t deny she looks good and has that effortless style that I’d love whereas Holly Willoughby looks so contrived and out of place.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 29/06/2025 08:34

@SnoopDougyDoug I really like a range called Skin and Tan, used to be Skinny Tan. They do a package called the nervous beginner’s bundle which is great.
I am very aware MN don’t like anyone ‘selling’ stuff so to be clear, I work in a different area now.
I used to test everything (I looked like a patchwork quilt!) and my fave of all time is Fake Bake Coconut Serum. It’s been in and out of the market but I know they’ve just started stocking via Superdrug.
For gradual tan you can’t beat Dove. They have one called ‘Summer Revived’ they do a light option. Just checked it’s on offer at Boots for…. £2.09! I would give that a try. At that price, it’s worth a go, I think.

SnoopDougyDoug · 29/06/2025 08:38

Oh great, thanks @PeggyMitchellsCameo!

mikado1 · 29/06/2025 08:52

I find vita liberata great and really natural. Also organic, if important.

ScupperedbytheSea · 29/06/2025 08:55

I think unfortunately Jo Whiley is a perfect example of good genes.

I could run 10k a day and eat mainly dust, and it would never give me anywhere close to her fabulous legs or cheekbones. Goddammit.

Highsmithery · 29/06/2025 08:57

What is so great about her is that she’s not conventionally pretty, she doesn’t have great hair yet it still all comes together to look fabulous.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 29/06/2025 09:16

I love JW! Just naturally beautiful and cool. Wish I could pull it off!

CanOfMangoTango · 29/06/2025 09:23

We really need that laugh reaction back!

💯 I do run 10k a day, and i am a little chunky monkey.

That dress she wore in 2023 was stunning. I followed the designer on IG and it's given me serious clothes envy. One day I will be rich enough/have a glam event to go to where I can wear such a thing.

AtomicBlondeRose · 29/06/2025 09:26

I think she does weights a lot judging by her figure. Honestly you can’t beat it for giving you a good body tone and giving you an all over healthy glow/vibe.

Having worked in that world, they will tan a celebrity for a big event, usually a one-off.
But it is known for them to go to the celeb a few days later to top it up.
For tours, for example, tanning brands will have recommended tanning therapists around the UK. If it is a bigger brand, they will have recommended ones in other countries, too.
The biggest tanners, like Jimmy Coco in the U.S., get flown all over the world. He tans the Kardashians regularly.
The Strictly ‘mob’ usually get done on the Friday night. Dancing on Ice crew on a Saturday. That is the toughest gig of all. When they go on tour, they will get tanned by recommended tanners. There is usually a brand attached, although Strictly use NDA’s so it’s not made public.
Claudia Winkleman… does her own, and is proud of it! You can usually see streaks on her hands, and that’s fine. It’s part of her charm.
Lots of celebs also have their tans ‘done’ and don’t discuss it. Again, which is fine.
It is quite the art. Lots of hair removal, and exfoliation, in order to get it right.
Most obnoxious person to tan? Peter Andre.
A-listers should be hard work but generally aren’t…
And yes, I am genuine worked in the industry for many, many years and to be fair it was great fun. The BRITs was brilliant, Harry Styles was fabulous, although a good friend had to tan Boris Johnson’s dad… not so fun!
Lots of celebs have a really light finish to even out skin tone before an event or shoot.
And in all of that, I can’t be arsed with it. I am like a milk bottle!
It is a big industry and worth a lot of money. In the UK it really started with St Tropez, which Victoria Beckham really was the poster child for.
The trend for that really overdone tan is really gone now, thank goodness.
The one question never answered? Who did Kate Middleton’s tan for her wedding day!

FASCINATING!

So what is the best brand on the market these days??

I had a tan recently for the first time in years and the lady used Sienna X

TaffetaPhrases · 29/06/2025 09:32

My husband and I were actually wondering if she’d had a facelift because she was so young looking, she looked incredible!

Fabulous range. The Body Blur is iconic.

Sienna X is a great brand and its professional products are really, really good.
There is so much variety now it is hard to keep up, even I feel swamped and I used to know it inside out.
There’s a new Australian brand Three Warriors which is great. I do use tanning stuff now and again in just not a regular tanner.
My younger friends really like Rose & Caramel.
I think, and I have tried it, that St Moriz is a great range, and it’s brilliant value for money.
There are so many formulations now but it’s basically just skin dye - DHA. There are waters, sprays, oils and gels but lotions and cream formulations last longer.
If I was spending my own money, and I do, then I go for Fake Bake. A bit old school, it went out of business a few years ago, there are no new ‘wow’ products but the core range is back and it’s my favourite. The packaging looks bloody awful now and the name is a bit early noughties 😂
St Tropez is also old school but it’s a great range.
I think a lot of pro tanners use Sienna X been around for a long time for a reason!!!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 29/06/2025 09:47

She’s a stunner

She does stay in a hotel at Glastonbury though..

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 29/06/2025 09:53

I'm fascinated by James Harknett now. His insta is great. He even does David Gandy.
He's obviously bombproof at keeping celeb secrets.

FluentAquaMoose · 29/06/2025 09:56

BlueEyedBogWitch · 28/06/2025 18:45

She is the voice of my Couch to 5k app. I’ve completed it several times, do loads of exercise, and I’m still a pasty stone overweight size 14.

Pffft.

We sound like twins! I’m a short arse too with blobby legs . Had a PT for 3 years and had to give him up 6 months ago due to injury. Would love to look cool like JW but obviously a shorter fatter version 🤦‍♀️

Floisme · 29/06/2025 09:57

Jo Whiley is one of the few reasons I still tune in to Glastonbury. I've no idea how she does it and I'm afraid I've no tips but I'm delighted there are women like her out there in public life. Watching her makes me happy.

I think one reason it works is that, like @Highsmithery says, it doesn't look styled. I've no idea whether or not she uses a stylist but, if she does, then they're bloody good at their job because she (JW) looks totally confident and at home in anything she wears.

Who is the designer on IG please @CanOfMangoTango , many thanks :)

Bridport · 29/06/2025 10:21

I follow her on instagram and she swims, runs and gardens.

I'm sixty and am really inspired by her. When I was 20 60 didn't look like Jo Whiley and if she can do it I'm gonna give it a go.

Bridport · 29/06/2025 10:28

Something I notice about her is that she never wears tight clothes (except to exercise). Something about everything being a little bit loose always makes her look relaxed and cool. She rocks sunglasses too.

notacooldad · 29/06/2025 10:31

*She’s a stunner

I dont blame her! I would too.

Over the years her shows has introduced me to so many up and co.ing bands.

worrisomeasset · 29/06/2025 10:32

Incredibly, there was a time when she was mocked for being unattractive. I’m sure I read an article in the Guardian back in the ‘90s that said she “had a good face for radio” and there seemed to be a consensus that she wasn’t pretty. It puzzled me as she was (and is) extremely good-looking.

Highsmithery · 29/06/2025 10:35

I don’t actually think she’s good looking at all - but she’s really got a certain something that makes her attractive.
