Hi,

Here’s a new thread!

I've heard nothing but bad things of selling with Thrift @Bimblesalong - maybe worth checking on trustpilot to see if it's improved before trying it?

Bimblesalong · 11/09/2025 15:56

Thanks @faustina I’ll check trustpilot - good call.

CakeAndJazz · 11/09/2025 17:11

@ScottishMouse sorry to hear that, and hope things are a bit better today. I think I mentioned a few weeks ago that I have a few of the cashmere cardigans, and that they do pill. I think they still feel quite robust whilst being really comfy and cosy.

Just echoing my appreciation of Plumo - I only have their studio items they design and produce in-house (so can’t comment on the prices of items from other labels). A coord that gets compliments literally every time I wear it. @weareallcats I also have the Clodagh dress from last year and it’s absolutely beautiful. Both items are the best quality of linen I’ve come across, and I can’t fault the garments in any way.

@faustina thanks for linking the boxy tees - have come across Colourful Standard before but have not known what the quality is like (their sweats and joggers are also appealing, but have struggled with quality of loungewear so much in the past).

Popplebop · 11/09/2025 18:03

I have just bravely branched out from Toast and bought these culottes and I am very happy. Wasn’t sure how they wouldn’t fit or indeed how scratchy they might be but the 8 is a good fit (between 6 and 8 in Toast). Lined to mid way down. They look very much like this image on me. Now tempted by the button pleated midi skirt they have. Previously only bought slippers from here. https://www.celticandco.com/product/tweed-culottes?cat=null&colour=413&type=false

Those do look nice!

ChelseaDetective · 11/09/2025 19:29

I’ve been looking at the Bryn Dianthus print dress all day, its a gorgeous colour and print, the problem is I don’t wear viscose…In the past I’ve found it too thin and drapey for my short, very stocky build and am very used to crisp cottons, corduroy, wool tweed and knitwear.

The reviews are all 5* positive but I don’t trust those any more since they’ve become ‘invitation only’ and I’ve not been asked to submit one since being mildly critical of one thing, despite buying a lot of items.

So Bryn Dianthus dress, yes or no?

IlovePond · 11/09/2025 19:58

@ChelseaDetective - I love the Bryn dresses but I also don’t buy viscose anymore because I get very hot in it, plus I always shrink it when washing and the material goes thick and clumpy.

I actually met one woman in a Toast who swore she put her Bryn in the washing machine - but I can’t imagine doing that myself!

I also have this issue with viscose - I think I have cracked it to some extent by gently stretching it when wet and then lots of steam when ironing (or steaming).

mm, I can’t dry clean anything as I live in the Scottish highlands and don’t have access to such a service - everything gets washed and is usually alright, but I’d forgotten that Viscose shrinks like nothing else so if for no other reason the Bryn is a no.

Thanks for saving me £215!

Doesn’t the steam shrink it even if the washing machine doesn’t? Or do you buy a loose fit and the shrinkage is OK?

I’m a dressmaker and sometimes use steam to preshrink my fabrics when its unsuitable for washing / I can’t be bothered to wash and dry it.

Saurus72 · 11/09/2025 21:28

I would say at least 50% of my wardrobe is Toast viscose dresses and I only ever wash them in the washing machine (30 degrees), no mishaps. Definitely don’t believe in dry cleaning.

Funny you should say that as I was pretty confused at the design and quality of a dress I ordered that felt it really did not live up to the reviews!

It was a lot better when there were loads of reveiws, both good and bad.

Even then though it used to annoy me that if you clicked ‘No’ to ‘Would you recommend this item to a friend?’ (I hate being asked this for everything, every two minutes) they’d be immediately on it with the reply:

‘We are sorry that you would not recommend this item, we hope that this was a mistake and that you would in fact recommend it to a friend’

I must be feeling grumpy tonight 🫣

TosstTastic · 11/09/2025 21:55

I always put in the review I wouldn't recommend to a friend. What's the point in wearing smallish run, eclectic clothes and then duplicating the look with your mate. Ridiculous idea, I'm not eight.

TosstTastic · 11/09/2025 21:59

And I like the reviews, they particularly help if the description or pictures are slightly misleading. I want to hear that it's not sold but would suit a substantial chest. I'm totally up for hearing it's like a warm hug around the house or that's it's worked at a wedding but not to the office.

I’ve never understood the obsession (everywhere, not just Toast) with getting you to say whether you’d recommend thing to a friend.

I just don’t have that kind of conversation with people, maybe others do, but I think its a bit weird.

Now that the Bryn dress is off the table I’m rather taken with the pink corduroy fabric, although a shacket and barrel trousers would not work for me at all so I’m safe! This could be the first A/W in years that I don’t end up ordering anything.

Honestly, I don’t understand the science, but gentle reshaping plus dampness seems to help.

weareallcats · 11/09/2025 22:10

I don’t think I’d recommend toast to any of my friends, not because it isn’t lovely, but because they all have a different sort of style.

PeonyBlush10 · 11/09/2025 23:24

I have a viscose Toast dress. Looks shrunken and terrible when pulled out of the machine (30 degree delicate wash), but is back to normal shape and length after a gentle stream iron.

I always presume they mean hypothetically. As in "would you if your friends had similar taste to you, and you were the sort of person to make recommendations ". I just say yes mostly.

Poplinskirt · 12/09/2025 06:40

Viscose contracts when washed and dried and then relaxes when pressed/ steamed.
It's not permanent
They do look awful, like old rags when they are freshly washed but steam out beautifully

I have many Toast Bryns/ viscose dresses and Gia shirts and they are all fine.

I love the reviews as they are usually far more help than Toast " guess the size"

faustina · 12/09/2025 10:02

I don't have any Toast viscose, but I did find some old Ghost vintage pieces during the summer, including vest tops which were perfect for the heatwave. If it's that kind of thing - like a slightly heavy crepe 100% viscose I've washed my Ghost things a million times and ironed them out afterwards - they're bombproof which was one of their selling points. Always slightly smaller after washing, but exactly the same size as when bought after ironing

IlovePond · 12/09/2025 10:57

Sadly I don’t even own an iron so I think I will have to continue to swerve the lovely viscose dresses.

I don’t iron anything, (last gave it a go in my first year at uni and said ‘never again!’😹)

Almost all my clothes - of which 95% is Toast - goes into the washing machine. The only things that go to dry cleaners are woolen trousers/jackets, and the odd mohair sweater. Some old Alix cotton/wool trousers goes in the machine.
I have 3 different Bryn dresses, that all are fine with the washing machine. And I never iron anything.

ScottishMouse · 12/09/2025 11:47

Popped into the Edinburgh store this morning to pick up a hat for a pal I am going to visit next week (which they didn’t have). It was so busy, a frenzy of trying on. I like it when it’s like that as you can see what others are choosing that maybe you wouldn’t look at yourself normally. However, I got caught up in it and bought three things! To be fair, I returned the cashmere cardi as I was fairly certain the bobbling would drive me mad. I bought the grey donegal cardi (in a bigger size than I had tried previously), the cotton cashmere dress (again in a bigger size than I previously tried), and the heathery sweater in ginger (I already have the oatmeal and have worn it already a few times even though it hasn’t been that cold yet). I must sit on my hands now for a while, and sell on some things I don’t wear.
Things I saw others trying and loved were the space dyed skirt, the Ikat wrap front trousers, and the wool v-neck dress. Loved that dress particularly but definitely for someone tall and willowy so that firmly rules me out.
