Purple hair on a "mature" lady

Hi, please can I have some help/ thoughts from you lovely stylish ones! I am 48, size 10, fairly ordinary and boring looking. Work as a senior engineer in relaxed and open minded company. I have a shoulder length bob,
and a septum piercing.. if this is relevant. Now, I went to a festival last weekend and dyed my sand coloured hair into bright purple for that, loved it! I've always wanted to try a bright colour but been too scared. The colour will wash off over some weeks, but the thing is, I actually really like it and wondered if I could rock it in my ordinary life? Or do I just look ...sad and old and d esperate to look younger? Please help me, is it a keeper or should I dye it back to my roadside brown as soon as possible? Edit- Sorry I can't seem to add photo so you'll just have to imagine how I look!

Honestly…if I see anyone with purple/pink etc dyed hair I just think “desperately trying to look edgy/relevant”.
Surely you could do other things with your hair to jazz up your look? Get rid of the Bob and go for a pixie cut/an undercut/short back and long on top etc?

LadyLucyWells · 17/06/2025 11:23

48 is 'mature' now? Go for it! You are young. And anyway, I have seen purple hair looking great on 80 year olds!

MuddlerInLaw · 17/06/2025 11:24

@Ameliel what do you imagine is the worst thing that could happen if you, as a free human being, choose the hair colour you like?

(I’m in my sixties and would frankly deck anyone who either called me a ‘mature lady’ or who thought my styling decisions were any of their business.)

GnomeDePlume · 17/06/2025 11:24

I can't see the point in colouring hair haircolour, go for it.

CreepingCrone · 17/06/2025 11:25

52, pink, purple and blue hair. Lots of piercings (septum too) amd tattoos. Fully Feral in my fifties and loving it 🌈

KurtCobainLover · 17/06/2025 11:25

I'm 48 and have purple hair and I love it! I also have a mullet, multiple piercings and am covered in tattoos that I keep adding to (running out of space now). I couldn't give a flying fig what other people think of me. I feel confident and that's all that matters to me. I did grow my hair last year and had it it's natural sandy blonde colour and people kept telling me I didn't look like me.

MuddlerInLaw · 17/06/2025 11:26

Every single person on this planet is ‘relevant’ @largeknitter. It doesn’t require any effort whatsoever to be so.

lovemycbf · 17/06/2025 11:27

i think it looks like Mrs Slocombe from are you being served.
The good old ladies purple rinse!
sorry just my own opinion but looks try hard to be cool and younger and just awful

Highlighta · 17/06/2025 11:29

I saw someone last week that I have not seen for a while. Ever since I have known her she has dyed her hair purple. She is in her 50s if that matters at all, I don't think it does.

She is blonde now. So I asked her what happened to the purple, as it really looked great on her. She said she was thinking of going a bit more tame, but decided to go back to purple as she felt a bit boring.

I was very honest in saying that she really rocked the purple. It brightened her up as well.

That example is stunning. Go for it OP. If you get bored after a while, then change it up to something else.

I always think it makes the person look older as in desperate to prove how young, fun and rebellious they are. BUT if you love it - do it!!

Beyondburnout · 17/06/2025 11:31

You already have purple hair and you love it so keep it.

Holluschickie · 17/06/2025 11:33

I don't like purple hair on anyone regardless of age. But that's irrelevant
If you like it, keep it. Your age doesn't matter.

GirlwithKaleidoscopeHair · 17/06/2025 11:35

Do IT!

my hair went white early and 10 years ago I stopped pretending it was still v dark brown. Revelation! I’ve been pink, red, purple, green, blue.

I’m 50.

I'm regularly told my hair is amazing. 😻 I’ll take that, god knows we all need a lift sometimes.

i also find younger people take me more seriously - as in they actually talk to me like I’m a human ;-)

turkeyboots · 17/06/2025 11:37

I dislike the pastel hair colours, go for a proper purple.

Go for it, you have one life and it’s short.

I knew a wonderful lady who was in her 80s and everyone knew her as the purple lady - everything was purple - her hair, her clothes, her bags, her jewellery. She was well loved.

The best people are the ones who are true to themselves and choose not to fade away.

HeadNorth · 17/06/2025 11:38

I've never seen purple hair look good on an adult. But then again, I've never seen you. If you think it looks great, that is what matters.

Agreed. I'm late sixties and dyed mine postbox red. I'd had all the colours of the rainbow when I was a punk in my twenties .Took one look at it and thought nope. I felt like one of those geezers that wears jaunty braces in lieu of a personality

PhilippaGeorgiou · 17/06/2025 11:51

If you love it, then do it... people spend too much of their lives caring about what other people think. Be happy in yourself, and rock purple hair...

I've permanant azure blue hair for so many years I can't remember, bobbed, wavy, long you name it and I'm 63. I like it because it's fun. I don't give a thought to being edgy or out there, so what?
It doesn't matter what other peeps think OP you go for it and rock your look.
Some of the things / clothing styles on here that some posters rave about are naff in my book, but everyone is different.
Go for it!🤘

It's brill! Do it, definitely. There will always be people who look down on any kind of unusual appearance but who cares about them. Let them stick with their classy beige boringness. I definitely will be using colours when my hair goes gray, finally a chance to have bright colours without needing to bleach!

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/06/2025 11:56

I am 52 and went back from pink to my normal colour this year after ten years. And I have only done that because the upkeep on the pink was getting on my nerves!

I would like to know why some people think its "try hard" or "trying to look young and cool".. What are we supposed to be doing then? Twin sets and pearls? I had my hair that colour because I loved it, nothing to do with how old I look!

WitchesofPainswick · 17/06/2025 11:59

That's a lovely shade OP. Go for it. I don't look twice at people with different coloured hair these days - although I saw a senior manager recently who I'd only seen on zoom and her 'sensible bob' had a bright pink under-layer - looked VERY SEXY I have to say.
