Is more expensive make up worth it?

I've always been a Rimmel/Maybelline etc, maybe No 7 if I'm feeling flush. Beauty Pie keep advertising on Facebook for me.

Is it worth it? I'm looking at some eyeshadow sticks which are £12 each which is a jump for me!

I think some things are worth it- foundation definitely! I think more expensive eye shadows are more pigmented and last longer (although I don't wear often).

RainbowAndArrow · 13/06/2025 18:50

I don't wear foundation much but I do keep looking at an under eye brightener which would be helpful....!

I think it depends on the product. I use MAC mascara, but my foundation is L’Oréal! Can’t advise on the eyeshadow sticks sorry, but I’d be tempted to go to Superdrug/Boots and try some out on your hand? I know they won’t be the same brand but you might find a cheaper alternative 😊

cherrycola66 · 13/06/2025 18:51

100% yes

stayathomer · 13/06/2025 18:51

Rimmel perfect match is my holy grail, haven’t found a foundation that suits/ feels better but eg eyeshadows only Clinique will do my sensitive eyes and my favourite’lipstick’ is a Clinique chubby stick.

Chewbecca · 13/06/2025 18:51

Some are, yes, but probably not ones advertised on FB!

This is Beauty Pie?

How much it costs often isn’t a factor in whether or not it works, for you? Victoria Beckham Eyeliner is raved about. Was rubbish for me, ran all over my face! I find the Trinny one much better and even the Superdrug Cheepo one stays better, on me.
I’ve tried a million different eyeshadows, Dior, Chanel, but my favourite is £7.50 Max Factor. Use what works for you.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/06/2025 18:58

My DD likes more £ make-up , not high end but not Suoerdrug
Charlotte Tilbury mascara , Fenty, foundation and powder ,

Mylee or Leighton Denny nails

For her (I don;t wear make-up really) she'd rather spend a bit and buy less , rather than trying to find the holy grail and wasting money .

Things she doesn;t spend on is lipbalm (PawPaw) , shampoo (BodyShop)

The packaging is better and definately with some you get what you pay for . Foundation especially , you get a better colour match and texture

Goodlorditssummer · 13/06/2025 18:59

I would add that any and all makeup is made better by a good setting spray. Charlotte Tilbury has a good one.

Fragmentedbrain · 13/06/2025 19:00

Yes

I need mascara that genuinely doesn't smudge (only ever found Estée Lauder and Bobbi brown actually managed this)

Eye pencil that goes on smoothly and not too heavy (hildun beauty)

Lip pencil as above

Under eye cream that doesn't sit in my wrinkles (Gatineau)

Creams with a bunch of science in them (shiseido, medik8, Dr jart)

It's depressing how much it costs to look tolerable 🤣

MathsFiend · 13/06/2025 19:02

I wouldn't say Beauty Pie make-up is any better than the cheaper brands.

IesuGrist1975 · 13/06/2025 19:07

I think it depends on the product and what suits you. My skin is quite sensitive and I found Nars and Laura Mercier excellent and I hate the Charlotte Tilbury stuff and find it really harsh on my skin and it has a funny smell.

I think powder make up like eyeshadow/ blush and bronzer are often better when you spend a bit more money as the texture and pigments are better. Same for eyeliner, I find the cheaper ones pull at my eyelids whereas spending a bit more money means it goes on nicely.

I’d rather buy less of better quality nowadays but loved the variety that the cheaper brands allowed me when I was younger and wore more make up.

My favourite is the Nars one, I find it excellent for my dark circles.

See I loooove the VB eyeliner, it’s my fav!
I think there are certain products that are better high end, but some you can get away with on the cheaper end. I love Fenty beauty lip liners and lip glosses. Refy blushes are good too. It’s all personal preference and what works for you! X

Exactly my point! You love VB eyeliner, it made me look like Alice Cooper on a bad day 🤣🤣 I have a massive mix of really pricy and mid range and really cheap products, but trial and error (my friends and family have been gifted an awful lot of stuff!) shows what works, for me and very often? Price point isn’t the clincher.

Caterpillargirl23 · 13/06/2025 20:11

I don't think I've ever been massively impressed with the more expensive make up. My most disappointing purchase was a Lisa Eldridge lipstick, it made my lips just as dry and uncomfortable as the cheaper brands.
If you have the money it's fun trying more expensive make up. If not Rimmel, Maybelline and ELF are fab.

Sparkletastic · 13/06/2025 20:19

Beauty Pie make up is pretty much No.7 standard and price. Truly premium brands are worth it for certain products (eg Victoria Beckham eyeliners, Lisa Eldridge lipsticks etc).

Sparkletastic · 13/06/2025 20:20

And re the VB eyeliners - the matte brown is terrible but the metallics are excellent

crazeekat · 13/06/2025 20:31

I never used to think so as I basically couldn’t afford any so was like no it makes no difference but actually I now swear by Lancôme volume a porter mascara, like nothing beats it for me, as well as Lancôme black eyeliner.

Blueberry911 · 13/06/2025 20:32

Beauty Pie is not luxury, it's a bit scammy.

Allmychickenscometoroost · 13/06/2025 20:44

I haven't found this to be the case and I've used make up at different price points, such as estee lauder, mac, Clinique. Not tried super expensive brands like Pat mcrgath, Victoria Beckham etc.

I mainly use cheaper brands despite being able to afford the pricier ones. I love maybelline, never a bad product from there. Loreal foundations and concealers are great. The only expensive product I consistently use is Mac lipliner, it's really worth the money. So creamy and lovely on.

having said that, the rimmel, Max factor etc products are really becoming much more expensive I've noticed... a tenner for the new rimmel lipgloss.. I was appalled 🤣🤣

Allmychickenscometoroost · 13/06/2025 20:48

@RainbowAndArrow if you want great eyeshadow sticks for cheaper the Elf ones are brilliant and only £6. The colours are beautiful and always recommended on here.

Charlotte Tilbury lipstick blew my mind , it is beautiful and lasts. I find I use the shade pillow talk every day . Applied a few times a day. Lipsticks lasts 6 months! The price per wear compared to buying Rimmel etc is far cheaper.
I have other expensive bits some cheap. But CT lipstick was a revelation to me. I have a few now and they are all like a dream .

PinkArt · 14/06/2025 01:13

Some are, some aren't. I was delighted to finally find an eyeliner that didn't transfer, but my budget was gutted it was Chanel. I suspect the VB ones would Alice Cooper on me too, but her posh balms are gorgeous. £30 for a lip balm is obviously ridiculous and yet I've ended up with two because they're that nice.
