Is more expensive make up worth it?

I've always been a Rimmel/Maybelline etc, maybe No 7 if I'm feeling flush. Beauty Pie keep advertising on Facebook for me.

Is it worth it? I'm looking at some eyeshadow sticks which are £12 each which is a jump for me!

The cost is completely irrelevant to me, I’m just happy to find things that don’t make my very sensitive skin flare up. I prefer their body creams and lip oils to any others I’ve tried, and I’ve tried a lot.

That's fine for you, but some of those RRP prices just look silly and made up. Hence why I don't think (and a lot of people also) that it's doing what it claims. Such a strange subscription model.

I don't wear foundation much but I do keep looking at an under eye brightener which would be helpful....!

I bought this, it's very good. My under eye circles were doing my head in and I'd been looking for something suitable. I'm interested in trying other Beauty Pie stuff, I've found some more expensive stuff is worth it as it's more pigmented ( eyeshadows) or lasts longer. Just read the reviews of each product and decide which issue is bothering you the most, I was willing to pay a bit more for the under eye product as I couldn't find anything suitable, but cheaper makeup ranges are very good these days. It's trial & error really.

This is Beauty Pie?

I've always assumed beauty pie products must be very overpriced because of the subscription model, they wouldn't want peoples balance getting too high so they pause the subscription, but there is also a limit to how many products someone will buy month to month. I generally steer clear of any company that uses a subscription model, like mlm's, if it was any good they would just sell it.

Littleguggi · 14/06/2025 23:30

Definitely! I use Pat Mcgrath foundation and blusher, and my skin condition is so much better compared to when I used a foundation from Boots. You are paying for skincare as well as makeup

angelandspike · 14/06/2025 23:44

Yes and no for me I guess
I've found some great budget stuff and some great expensive stuff
Got a wet and wild highlighter that’s beautiful but I also appreciate hourglass highlighters
same with foundation, I really like Estée Lauder but also no 7

Denimrules · 14/06/2025 23:49

Just bought 2 different concealers - Clinique and Kiko Milan. The latter much cheaper and really excellent.

Loki64 · 14/06/2025 23:56

Ive used soooo many brands over the years. I now will only use fenty, I find it amazing and as soon as I started using it I kept getting compliments on my make up, I did it exactly the same as always just switched product.

AliBaliBee1234 · 15/06/2025 00:06

I used to be a complete make up snob but now... it's not worth it as much as it used to be. The cheaper options have upped their game too much.

That being said, I always use high end foundation/skin tints etc as I find ingredients in cheaper ones can break me out.

blueshoes · 15/06/2025 00:09

I never spend on expensive make up because there is only so much make up can do for my face 😂

I got my eyeliner and eyebrows tattoo-ed in so no need to spend on those or waste precious minutes applying them in. Daycream from Q10 Aldi, foundation from L'Oreal, blusher from Rimmel, concealer from Collections and lipstick from MAC. Job done.

WTHJH · 15/06/2025 07:09

@RainbowAndArrow if you want to have fun trying out expensive makeup without any cost go on to the

Hermes

or

Gucci

sites as both offer virtual trying on. Obviously that won’t help with the texture of a foundation but you can experiment with eye and lip colours.

Really it depends what matters to you. I wear very little make up, use contact lenses and have sensitive skin. The best mascara I’ve experienced is by Tom Ford; I used to repeat buy, but the price is slightly terrifying now. My favourite lipsticks have come from Gucci - and it’s easy to become addicted to their beautiful packaging, in addition to the excellent functionality.

You could take a look at Cult Beauty. Loads of mid to high range cosmetics brands - and there are often free gifts or sample sizes to assist with trying new stuff.

NeedWineNow · 15/06/2025 09:51

I think so for certain things. I like Lancôme, Benefit or Estée Lauder mascaras for instance. After buying and discarding so many cheaper items or being swayed y dupes I’ve decided that it is more cost effective to just get one decent mascara, foundation etc.

luckylavender · 15/06/2025 09:56

I love VB eyeliner. Tried loads and it suits me best. I love Urban Decay eye shadows. But mascara, always come back to Maybelline, lipstick usually Maybelline or L’Oreal. Use Laura Geller baked foundation.

Pastadisaster · 15/06/2025 10:02

I think it's very much person/skin dependent. I have a mixture of cheaper and more expensive makeup but that's only really come from trial and error. I have very oily eyelids and the cheap gel eyeliners are no good. Bobbi Brown and Mac gel pots we're good throughout my twenties and thirties but I don't know if the formula changed or my eyelids got more oily but I was finding it started to transfer to my eyelids. I've not bought Jones Road (which is actually Bobbi Brown's company now, she left the Bobbi Brown brand) and this doesn't transfer at all - but is more expensive.

The beauty pie eye crayons are exactly the colours I'm after - but that's £72 for 6 eye shadows.....

I never wore expensive makeup until a few months ago. I decided to splash out on some Charlotte Tilbury foundation - both liquid and powder. I loved it so I bought some blusher & bronzer too. It is really nice but expensive so I only use it for special occasions and nights out. It lasts for hours. Worth the investment to look good I think.

Why don't you order 2 contrasting colours and try then out, if they work for you then order the others! I like high end make up. Dior eyeshadow, Chanel eyeshadow, Lancome lipstick but I also have drug store stuff. For foundation I'm not too bothered as I find cheaper products are often sheerer and my skin is pretty good. Basically I like more expensive things that contain colour as my pet hate is when the product comes out nothing like what it looks like in the pot.

Never keep stuff for best!

CuriousKangaroo · 17/06/2025 08:33

Completely depends on the brand and item. I use a mixture of high street and high end make up - just depends on whose is best for me and my skin.

NeedWineNow · 17/06/2025 09:00

Off the back of this thread and my earlier post I had a sort out of all my makeup and was ruthless about throwing out old dupes, things I didn’t use etc. The brands I now have (and will be sticking with) are

Foundation - Estée Lauder and Tarte powder, Garnier BB cream
Blush - Estée Lauder and Benefit
Eye shadows - Estée Lauder, No7, Pat McGrath, Tarte
Mascara - Benefit, Estée Lauder
Brow gel - NYX
Eye Pencils - VB, Kiko
Lipsticks - Clinique

Beauty Pie is the Tupperware of our times

sweetpickle2 · 17/06/2025 09:23

Beauty Pie isn't luxury, but their eye brightener is very good.

The majority of my make up is Armani or Dior or Saie, and I do find it streets ahead of the drugstore stuff.

That being said, I use a 2 quid eyebrow pencil from Poundland and am yet to find a more expensive option anywhere that comes close.

UpToonGirl · 17/06/2025 09:44

Frustratingly...it depends but sometimes you don't know until you try it. I've got some Laura Mercier eyeshadow sticks which are pretty good products but the colours just don't quite suit me.

Recently I've been more strict with myself before buying foundation to go to a counter and get a decent sized sample so I can try it over a few days. Before I'd been getting colour matched but I felt awkward about asking for a proper sample, which is ridiculous considering how much some foundations now cost. Bit more difficult for other products but if you can get to a counter and try the product out first you could save a fortune.

For me I tend to spend more on powder (CT), foundation (Shiesdo) mid on blush and eyeshadow (NudeStix) and low on mascara and lipstick.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 17/06/2025 09:46

I find the more expensive stuff tends to last without smudging. Love Bobbbi Brown stuff.
