Is more expensive make up worth it?

I've always been a Rimmel/Maybelline etc, maybe No 7 if I'm feeling flush. Beauty Pie keep advertising on Facebook for me.

Is it worth it? I'm looking at some eyeshadow sticks which are £12 each which is a jump for me!

I buy cheaper brands these days, but ended up going back to Bobbi Brown for foundation as I find they have the widest range of colours and do the best matching.

zaxxon · 14/06/2025 07:59

Temptalia is a good site if you're looking for cheap makeup dupes, especially lip products. It's US based, so some products are unavailable here, but loads of brands are global now of course.

@PinkArt
Can you tell me which Chanel liner this is please

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 14/06/2025 08:05

I use a lot of Bobbi Brown make up. The mascara and eye liner, are the two things I won't budge on. They lost my custom for foundation when they stopped the one I used, I now use a L'oreal one.

Eye shadow sticks i found similar in Superdrug for a lot less.

If I have the money I'll treat myself but the cheaper brands are just as good.

BigGra · 14/06/2025 08:28

I had presumed beauty pie was white label products but it’s not, the company is owned by the same woman who also owns Soap and Glory.
Their operating model is subscription, the higher the annual membership fee you pay the lower the end price product.
As to whether the products are better would be a matter of personal opinion.

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 14/06/2025 08:33

Not always. I've just found a very cheap powder (W7 Micro Fix) and it's so finely milled compared to my Maybelline which costs more than double!

yourefreetodowhatyouwanttodo · 14/06/2025 08:38

I always splash out on the base make up
foundatjon/ concelar (hourglass)
also lipstick as it sits better (bobbi brown)
Blush - rare beauty
highlighter Charlotte tilbury
I have found cheaper lipglosses are better

but I use boots brand skin care
vit c
hyaluronic acid
azelaic acid
glycolic acid which has transformed my skin along with weekly lasers / steaming face

Mauvehoodie · 14/06/2025 08:57

I haven't found expensive any better necessarily. I do obsessively read reviews though and try and work out what products will be like eg I have quite oily skin so if a product has a few reviews that say it slid off their face then it's likely it'll do the same with mine even if the majority of reviews are good. I did like il makiage foundation though, a fb sell but one that worked out!

I think it's more helpful to spend the time watching some YouTube videos and getting the application really good and right for your age/features/skin type etc. no matter the cost of products. Lisa Eldridge has some good ones.

SisterTeatime · 14/06/2025 09:10

The packaging is better so if, like me, you don’t wear much makeup and cart it about with you, it lasts much longer before the packaging falls apart. Having said that, I’m really keen on Pixi makeup - the packaging is good and the base, blush, bronzer and eye brightener are great. The eye brightener is 10x better than others I’ve tried at a similar price, though ELF isn’t bad. And I like Boots Natural lipstick partly because it has very little payoff.

I’d always spend on powder (NARS) and I think the very cheapest eyeliners tend to be poor. L’Oreal/No 7 sort of level is fine, but ideally I’d buy £££ eye makeup. It partly depends what your ‘problem’ or sensitive areas are.

Chewbecca · 14/06/2025 09:16

My VB eyeliner packaging is shite, the lid constantly comes off so the nib is permanently broken and it doesn't sharpen very nicely. I do like the colour though!

Tiredofwhataboutery · 14/06/2025 09:23

I used to wear expensive make up (pre children with a disposable income) I’ve honestly found Aldi really good. They do a concealer / brightened in a gold tube which is as good the YSL one. I’ve found as I get older (46) to stay clear of powder as aging so just a bb cream concealer, mascara and a cream blush, setting spray. Looks like me but better

msmillicentcat · 14/06/2025 09:24

I think generally you get what you pay for but it also depends on your skin and also your likes and dislikes. I love VB eye pencils and the Lisa Eldridge lipstick is my current favourite. I find cheaper makeup sometimes doesn’t go on as nicely or last as long, but that’s not always the case.
I used to be a member of Beauty Pie for a couple of years. I didn’t love the skincare and ended up with a lot stuff that I used a few times and then shoved in a drawer. But the makeup is fairly decent, I have 2 of those eye shadow sticks which I quite like and they don’t feel massively different to the Fenty eyeshadow stick I have.

That's good to know because I really love the colours but because of the delivery charge it would be daft to just get one and try it ..

Yes sometimes it is. I splashed out on 4 Tom ford lipsticks, I don't buy a lot of makeup but they were definitely worth it, same with Charlotte Tilbury. I use Estee lauder foundation but they discontinued the one I like, might try Nars next.

Agree with Aldi! I got a concealer in there recently and it's so pigmented I only need the tiniest bit which looks so much better on the mid 40s undereye area.

The stylo yeux waterproof. I've moved over to liquid liners in recent years but the Chanel was my go to for ages. It's a twisty up one too, so less wastage than the ones that need a traditional pencil sharpener.

Pyjamatimenow · 14/06/2025 10:37

Foundations and blushers are, lipsticks and eyeshadows less so

Beauty Pie is not luxury, it's a bit scammy.

How is it scammy, they’re pretty clear what their setup is.

Poonu · 14/06/2025 10:44

Goodlorditssummer · 13/06/2025 18:56

How much it costs often isn’t a factor in whether or not it works, for you? Victoria Beckham Eyeliner is raved about. Was rubbish for me, ran all over my face! I find the Trinny one much better and even the Superdrug Cheepo one stays better, on me.
I’ve tried a million different eyeshadows, Dior, Chanel, but my favourite is £7.50 Max Factor. Use what works for you.

I agree I got caught up in all the hype. Because the first time ever I contracted blepharitis. Although I'm not blaming the pencil I guess I was just using it loads. Tbh I found it too smudgy as the day or night went on - not in a good way.
Foundations definitely but I think that's more to do with shade and skin type i.e. if you're looking for a moisturizing one.
Liquid liners definitely high street.

slinkiemalinkiey · 14/06/2025 10:44

You need to experiment and see what works the best for you. I use slightly more expensive make up but find that I save in the long run as I don't do any of those wandering up the aisles in Boots that end up with random purchases.
My mascara is Dior. My eye shadows are MAC or Dior ( Dior definitely last longer) . Lipsticks are Dior or MAC. Eyeliner is Dior. I don't use foundation as such but do use this.

Like the sound of this. Is it a setting powder?

Yes, a pressed powder to set makeup. I get it from the cheap makeup shop in an outlet shopping centre but you can get it from Amazon. W7 Matte Micro Fix.

I also want to know how it’s a scam. I’ve been a member for years and there’s enough products I buy over and over to make it worth it. I just ignore the ‘retail price’ stuff.

I don’t rate the makeup other than the powder, cream blush and lip glosses. I quite liked the eye shadow sticks but managed to snap both the ones I’ve tried, and I’m not generally clumsy.

The only expensive brand I regularly buy from is Lisa Eldridge.

Blueberry911 · 14/06/2025 18:42

You're paying money for the privilege of spending more money with them, on products that they claim are made in the same factories exactly the same as the luxury brands. It doesn't sound legit to me at all? But you do you if you enjoy the products :)

The cost is completely irrelevant to me, I’m just happy to find things that don’t make my very sensitive skin flare up. I prefer their body creams and lip oils to any others I’ve tried, and I’ve tried a lot.
