Is more expensive make up worth it?

I've always been a Rimmel/Maybelline etc, maybe No 7 if I'm feeling flush. Beauty Pie keep advertising on Facebook for me.

Is it worth it? I'm looking at some eyeshadow sticks which are £12 each which is a jump for me!

It really depends on what it is, I adore Charlotte Tilbury but one of my favourite foundations is a revolution one. I’ve never tried beauty pie so can’t comment, the monthly structure put me off it tbh.

MathsFiend · 17/06/2025 11:43

I don’t think the beauty pie eye crayons are that great, and they used to be a lot cheaper than £12 each. I know some people had issues with the colour changing after a few wears, although tbh that was a while ago so may have been sorted by now. I’d defo say beauty pie make-up is more no 7 / revlon standard than designer. Though you can get some good stuff with those brands too, but you don’t have to pay a subscription for it.

i had the beauty pie subscription for a couple of years but don’t miss it at all.

Never keep stuff for best!

Very true but I wfh so only really see people on camera, they can't tell whether I have my expensive or cheap stuff on !! 😁

uncomfortablydumb60 · 17/06/2025 11:58

Personally the only thing I spend out on is lipstick. Mac and Clinique because the pigments are better
Pretty much everything else is by Revolution
I have a L'Oréal concealer which is the perfect match.

I see your point. 👍

Ophie · 17/06/2025 14:34

I have a direct split on things I’ll spend money on high end & drug store:
foundation, concealer, powder, setting sprays and eyeshadow and lipstick are always higher end for me after trialling so many drug stores I’ve never found they’ve compared. They look much better on me personally, last longer and overall just are better imo on myself.
by this I mean Dior, Nars, MAC, Charlotte tilbury, Huda beauty etc

However things like blush, bronzers (liquid and powder), lip liners and balms or glosses, eyebrow pencils and eyeliners I’ve found no comparable difference in the way it performs or lasts on my skin so happily buy the affordable ones!
this is more primark makeup, maybelline, elf cosmetics etc

funnily enough I switch between maybe Kline and Mac for my mascara, love both for different reasons and they both work great.

Ophie · 17/06/2025 14:47

I have this and it is beautiful, similarly their highlighter palette in 001 universal. They’re expensive to purchase but I’ve travelled well with them (no flimsy packaging) and they’re compact enough for a handbag if you wish to commute with them. I have had mine around 8 months now and love how buttery the shadows are, definitely get yourself down to a big boots or department store to swatch them but I do think the quality is superior to that I’ve trialled from say maybelline/loreal.

Also, every so often they go into the Harvey Nichols/Harris’s beauty etc sales☺️ Also if it’s within your budget a lot of the big brands will do a full face of makeup for x amount of money which is redeemable with product purchases, I did one at Charlotte Tilbury and got to spend the £72 on product after so essentially got to “trial” the products for free done by an MUA who explained the difference in all the variations of things.

Most makeup goes off between 6-18 months, I definitely wouldn't keep it for best!

YesHonestly · 17/06/2025 15:29

As many others have said, it varies on the product.

No make up looks good if your base isn’t good.

The more costly items that I use -
Bobby Brown Face Base
It Cosmetics CC Cream
Mac Mascara
ABH Brow Gel

Cheaper products -
Rimmel eyebrow pencil
W7 mascara for day time, which is really good
Elf lip oils or Nivea lip balm

A bit of a mix and match really!

kellygoeswest · 17/06/2025 16:23

I use a mix of products really, but in terms of my higher end go to's:

NARS Laguna 1 Bronzer - I bought this about 3 years ago, used it pretty much every day and only just hit the pan. It was around £35 but with how long lasting its been the value is great.

MAC Studio Face and Body Radiant Sheer Foundation - I have combination skin but find a lot of foundations go flaky or look too matte on me. I love how glowy/light/dewy this foundation is, and it lasts an entire work day/into the evening.

Blushers - I love the NARS liquid and powder blushers but I'm also really getting on well with an NYX one I bought recently (from the "Buttermelt" range). Genrally I prefer liquid blushes to powder but this ones so good!

Lipliners and mascaras - I generally go High Street/'drug store'. I tend to go for "tubing" mascaras because I have quite watery eyes and these are the only type which don't transfer during the day!

Guavafish1 · 17/06/2025 16:27

mac is great for foundations … expensive. Like YSL lipstick. High street is also great but has also become pricey

Taytayslayslay · 17/06/2025 20:31

I don't think beauty pie is that good. I have spent a fortune on makeup over the years, but now I just stick to drugstore! Usually revolution because it's affordable and does exactly what I need.

RainbowAndArrow · 26/06/2025 08:52

So after reading everything on this thread and risking becoming a make up nut I bought a Nara set and a Dior one. I've never, ever spent anywhere near that kind of money on make up

I wore it yesterday. I hadn't mentioned anything to anyone and saw my friend. Her first comment was 'wow your eyes look amazing!'

So thanks S&B!!!

It's an expensive hobby to buy make up that doesn't work for you.

I'm like you OP and prefer avon, maybelline, elf and rimmel price ranges. I get a No7 advent calendar and a beauty box from Boots at Xmas with some expensive items in, but they don't seem anymore expensive than my usual cheaper stuff other than nicer packaging. I'm of the mindset that it's the same stuff with higher profit margins.

I personally love the trinny skin care and make up it looks better on my skin than anything I have tried they also have old school make up counters where you can book a proper consult to get shade matched and see how you like the products. Everything is cream based which may not suit everyone.

That’s what they tell us! I’ve got much older make up and it’s fine.

TheCoralMoose · 01/07/2025 02:45

I wont buy Dior Chanel or very expensive brands i think they are way over priced.

I buy Boots 17 or natural collection.

Too Faced born this way foundation is brilliant i bought a bottle for a special occasion i wouldnt buy it all the time though.
I love the Too Faced counter in Boots.

simsbustinoutmimi · 01/07/2025 02:52

I would say no. I’ve had Chanel, Huda, YSL, Mac foundation. I found the best was Maybelline dream radiant. Collection concealer is great and a cult classic. So cheap too.

i love my blushes and have tried loads, the viral Dior one was crap, NYX much better.

HOWEVER I’ve never found a powder better than hourglass ethereal light. It’s just gorgeous. Nothing matches up.

and I think MAC lipstick surpasses any other brand

max factor do the best mascara and I’ve tried higher end brands

simsbustinoutmimi · 01/07/2025 02:55

Foundation, eyeliner, blush, mascara, , concealer - I’d go cheap

lipstick, powder I’d go high end

so Overall no it’s not worth it

Elektra1 · 01/07/2025 05:18

I don’t rate Beauty Pie make up products (skin care is good). Some more expensive make up products are just better than high street, but there’s loads of high street stuff that’s excellent. I use the NYX eyebrow pencil (£10) that’s just as good as the Anastasia one (£35). L’Oreal True Match foundation is great but Armani Liquid Silk is better. Plenty of high street mascaras are great - look for the tubing kind as they don’t transfer to your skin. Eyeshadow sticks I find the Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier ones better than any others.

justasking111 · 01/07/2025 05:36

Foundation Elizabeth Arden, blusher Nars liquid, bronzer bare minerals and ultra glow loose powder mixed in a compact for the right shade. Eyeshadow Mac individual, mascara Maybelline, lipstick Mac.

I do use expensive brushes for foundation, eyeshadow and bronzer. It sticks better and for longer.

My days of experimenting with cheap products are behind me.

How much it costs often isn’t a factor in whether or not it works, for you? Victoria Beckham Eyeliner is raved about. Was rubbish for me, ran all over my face! I find the Trinny one much better and even the Superdrug Cheepo one stays better, on me.
I’ve tried a million different eyeshadows, Dior, Chanel, but my favourite is £7.50 Max Factor. Use what works for you.

How??? The VB one sets like a sharpie on me! Needs proper remover to make it budge. Its phenomenal
