These sandals - yay or nay?

Keen Rose https://amzn.eu/d/dSI6aKb

I want sandals with a toe box to hide my fugal nails, comfy to walk and sand in all day. Will wear as a teacher who teaches forest school and outdoor activities as well as in the classroom. With and without socks, must be machine washable.

I like the look of these Keen sandals. Do you agree or can I find better?

I had a fungal nail infection a couple of years ago, although that is not why I was wearing the Keen Rose sandals - I love them, they are practical and supportive for walking in a rural area and I have a couple of other types of Keen sandals.

Anyway the fungal nail was easily disposed of within a few weeks with a Scholl fungal nail kit from Amazon, but I assume you've tried that OP.

LegoTherapy · 27/05/2025 08:30

They are fine and I say that as someone who wears Teva chunky fuckers. I second getting your toe nails sorted but if you don’t want to do that just paint them. My mum was thought to have fungal nails but clippings sent off said they were fine, just discoloured and thickened. I just paint them for her.
People who post on here often recommend some extremely awful items in my opinion so I always say to go with what you personally like and what fits your needs. I can’t remember what any of my teachers wore on their feet and if they are outside with you they will probably think they are appropriate for the environment.

WorriedRelative · 27/05/2025 08:41

I have a pair of Keens and they are very comfortable and supportive, really practical if you need something that will stand up to and be safe hiking and wading. I bought mine for entirely practical reasons not fashion and got a single dark colour so they basically look like trainers/hiking shoes. I think the Rose style are awful, it's that weird kind of trying to be practical but feminine thing I think. Go for something more unapologetically sporty like the Keen Newport or Whisper or Zerraport.

Seems most think they ugly...however think I will just go for them. Comfy, outdoorsy, hide toes from teenagers.
Some asked why wash them? If I don't wear socks then my shoes start to smell and don't want to spread fungus to other toes!!

Why aren’t you getting treatment for your fungal infection? It’s available from a chemist

NewMoonToday · 27/05/2025 09:01

Nay.

Look cheap and ugly.

goldtaps · 27/05/2025 09:02

I don’t think you need to give what your shoes look like a second thought. Who are you trying to impress with your shoes?… No one I’d imagine!

wear shoes that fit your purpose and be down with it. If anyone was to even give a passing thought to someone else’s shoes then that says more about them than you! Go for it

DiscoPolly · 27/05/2025 09:09

I wouldn’t wear sandals to forest school. We tell the children not to wear them for good reasons.

Everygrain · 27/05/2025 09:12

They look fine for what you want, I would get them.

I have had fungal nail on and off for years, OTC treatments help a bit but not much. Mine is not bad enough to have to take the tablets which can have side effects. I have found the thing that helps mine the most is never to wear nail varnish which I used to use to hide it but made it worse.

getsomehelp · 27/05/2025 09:36

It is much better to have a toe box if you are walking in rough nature & outdoors.
Obviously not "pretty".
You are looking for something for summer, when on your feet all day.
They are fine

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/05/2025 09:36

For forest school, I think they are perfect. Toe boxes are great to protect your fungal toe nail.

Have you worn Keen before?? They tend to come up quite big/wide.

(Edited because quoted post didn't show)

Interesting that they're both the same brand! I prefer OP's for looks, comfort and practicality. I quite like the white macrame too, but they look like they wouldn't survive 2 minutes on a city street, let alone a forest school!

GarlicPile · 27/05/2025 09:42

Nay ... but everyone needs a pair of godawful, ugly, practical sandals. I like the Siebel ones better. Nobody's going to say "What a beautiful pair of ugly sandals", though, so you may as well go for whichever most suits your specific purposes.

Jk987 · 27/05/2025 09:50

Fungal nails are easily treated - do that! It’s basic self care!

Once that’s done you got the pick of some much nicer shoes.

In the meantime paint your toenails in a nice bright colour.

MyKingdomForACat · 27/05/2025 10:04

Hell no!

Lifestooshort71 · 27/05/2025 10:16

I think they look as comfy as slippers but can be worn outdoors (the Holy Grail), I'd buy 2 pairs if I had some spare cash.

ReignOfError · 27/05/2025 10:20

I love my Keens, although I usually wear Whisper. My most recent pair finally gave up the ghost in April after 7 years and well over 15.000 miles of walking on everything from fells and rivers to city streets.

I’m off to buy replacements today as it happens.

Definitelynotme2022 · 27/05/2025 11:12

I'm sorry, I think those sandals are horrible. But then they're not my style at all.

I have had a fungal nail infection, and I've treated and cured it. I tried loads of things, but the only thing that has worked is Active Silver magic gel. The pot lasts for ages, and I still apply it every few days just to be on the safe side. Although I have gel varnish on them now. But it's definitely worth a go! The other thing that worked was when I was on quite a strict diet and had completely cut out sugar - although that could be a coincidence.

LoyalMember · 27/05/2025 11:19

Hideous looking. You'd look like some Green Party, Greenpeace activist.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/05/2025 11:35

Oh my eyes! God those are ugly. And will make literally everything you wear look frumpsville. They are however ‘practical’ (awful word, lol)..

coffeegirl73 · 27/05/2025 11:47

Sorry OP they are dreadful ! Just wear loafers ? If you hate your nails or cover up with some nail polish or get the nails treated - don’t get those tho !

justanothermanicmondayyyy · 27/05/2025 11:59

These are SO much better.

the sandals OP posted are beyond horrific and I'd rather look at fungal nails.

unless anyone at the school has a fungal nail fetish I don't think anyone will take the blindest bit of notice.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 27/05/2025 12:17

I have keen whisper sandals. Very ugly but they are comfortable so I really don’t care

bumblingbovine49 · 27/05/2025 12:20

I have these op. They are seriously confortable and I think look slightly better than a lot of 'hiking' type sandals which these are really . I honestly think they are way more innocuous than a lot of those type of sandals. Buy hey, what do I know :)
