Personal Stylist has changed my life

Bigboobsnotgoodboobs · 03/05/2025 16:55

Back in October I saw a personal stylist for the very first time. It was a real investment, not cheap (it was at selfridges). I got some amazing clothes and my style totally changed

I have just had a 2nd appointment for “spring/summer” and can actually say it has changed my life.

each time I’ve gone I’ve spent just over £1000 on clothes, but I haven’t really spent much in between

I go on holiday in a couple of weeks and it’s the very first time I’m going away without being in a blind panic about what I’m going to wear, and literally buying a tonne of stuff online, however inappropriate before I go away.

its not cheap but its such an investment in me. At 45 with young children, size 16/18 I’m not lying when I say it’s transformed my life. I used to live in black leggings and black tops. Now my wardrobe is bursting with colour.

not looking for any validation here, but if you’re in a similar situation and just don’t know how to shop for your body type then I’d say absolutely go for it

This seems as incomprehensible to me as throwing money into a fire. But I’m glad it works for others.

Pikablue · 04/05/2025 07:10

You get what you pay for, JL offers the service for free and the people who do the styling don't have the same passion, experiences and motivation as someone who works freelance or otherwise as a stylist and has to build a solid reputation in order to secure more work.

Glad it worked out well for you OP, i think the poster saying they don't like the clothes has missed the point- they absolutely fit the brief you gave and the whole point of a decent stylist is that they tailor their recommendations to what you want!

A treat, £2000? And that’s without the clothes cost from the second visit.
Wish my job paid better

No the £2000 was for the 1st and second visit combined

trust me we aren’t rich, this was a much talked about and considered choice. I’m 45 years old with 6 year old twins. The only new clothes I had bought over the recent years were baggy tops and legging.
most of my tops had got holes in them

I had almost hit crisis point, I hated how i looked, clothes shopping drained me of all of my energy, I didn’t have a clue and picked up all the wrong things

I probably won’t buy any new clothes now until next year.

I have also had a bad experience with JL. Used to do the free styling with debenhams and that was always top notch (at the Oxford Street store). Really miss that. Sad that the jl offering is bad all around rather than just my experience

sandgrown · 04/05/2025 07:25

@Bigboobsnotgoodboobs thanks so much for the jeans recommendation. As an older plus size mum I really struggle to find flattering jeans.

herethereandeverywhatnow · 04/05/2025 07:29

I’m just here to say I’ve had 2 pretty good JL experiences, one at Peter Jones and one at Oxford Street. It sounds like the experience is very variable but both stylists I met (while very different) produced multiple items and outfits within budget that I’d never have chosen but then liked, but I couldn’t stretch to buying all of them unfortunately - reading this thread is making me want to go back as it’s been a few years since then (and I still repeatedly wear the things I bought from these sessions). Silly things like finding that Jigsaw plain white T-shirts are the best in terms of quality and fit, and different styles of jeans to try, made it really worth doing for me.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 04/05/2025 07:30

I used the JL service at Solihull, it was a woman with long red hair she was good and it has kick started me into different choices and no hard sell.

Sorry did the £2k include the stylist time and all the clothes for 2 appointments?

Seems really cheap to me..

Rispa42 · 04/05/2025 07:33

love this @Bigboobsnotgoodboobs - so pleased for you!

I actually had a similar experience with a free stylist at JL back in 2019, I remember her bringing out clothes, thinking no way, then trying them on and loving them - still wear most of what I bought today!

I’ve had multiple appts with JL since (the original stylist I had left over Covid) and they’ve all been crap. In the 3 sessions I’ve had, I’ve not bought a single thing, super disappointing. Would love to find someone decent again!

Dunkou · 04/05/2025 07:34

I used JL Oxford St a few years ago, for general everyday and office wear. The stylist was clearly pretty bored, and ran out of things to offer me as I’d asked for no man made fabrics and my budget was medium.

She did however bring me a few dresses which worked and I would never have usually considered, so it was worthwhile.

Rispa42 · 04/05/2025 07:36

And yes, agree with other posters, apart from the first stylist I had at JL, who was great, the others have all seemed bored and disinterested and just want to finish up with you as fast as possible…

Guinessandafire · 04/05/2025 07:40

A good friend used the John Lewis one and so much happier and looks fantastic now.

It's definitely a worthwhile investment if you are unhappy with your wardrobe and style.

It’s great to see this post. I find it sad when someone posts about clothes giving them confidence and others dismiss fashion as frivolous or pointless. Wearing clothes that make you feel confident benefits so many other areas of your life. From making friends to being confident at work. If my outfits, hair etc aren’t working I don’t feel good. Glad she found you so many great outfits. Would you feel comfortable replicating her styling yourself now to supplement with more pieces?

NoSleepOver · 04/05/2025 07:50

@Bigboobsnotgoodboobs Do you visit her at Selfridges & she therefore only selects outfits from Selfridges for you? Can I please ask which branch of Selfridges?

21ZIGGY · 04/05/2025 07:50

Bigboobsnotgoodboobs · 03/05/2025 17:59

Of course, it’s Clare Wakins Personal Styling xx

I knew you were going to say clare! My friend goes to her and recommends her to everyone!

so my 1st appointment was in October so firmly autumn winter

i was starting to really panic about spring/summer. I’d gone to M&S, tried loads of things on and hated everything. I literally came home so down and depressed. We go away abroad in a couple of weeks so I was starting to really stress

my appointment last week was amazing and I’ve now got all my things for my holiday as well as the rest of spring/summer.

so yes to answer your question now I’ve shopped 2 different seasons I now feel much more confident in choosing clothes

So it’s not quite as straight forward. She does a lot of work beforehand and depending on your requirements/budget she’ll maybe pick selfridges, Harvey Nichols or I think maybe a city centre appointment. I live near Sheffield and there is literally such a poor selection of shops here so I’d always go to Manchester

I live in Manchester too. Where do you go to visit her then? Thanks for replying to my questions.

Don’t want to high jack your post op but just to add…

I was feeling so crap, can’t lose weight, can’t stop binge eating. After having 2 kids my confidence was at an all time low. I saw a personal trainer (which to me was something rich, fit, privileged people do) I was so wrong it has changed my life. I’m a stone down in weight and managing my eating so much better. Going to the gym twice a week and just feel so much better. Can’t recommend it enough. So well done op glad you’re feeling good about yourself. Sometimes you have do do a leap of faith!

Love this!

I like the idea of a personal stylist too but if I had to pick one it would be the PT as it’s prioritising health.

Could you share how much did it cost and how long did you use their services?

I’ve lost over 2 stone myself using home exercises mainly and focusing on diet most of all. It’s taken over 2 years though. I have one more stone to go and hoping to shift that by end of summer.

Once I have lost the rest of the weight I may look into the personal stylist service. For most of my life I was very slim and I think got away with wearing things that weren’t that flattering on my 5ft 2, short torso, big boobs frame when I put on weight it really showed so I have been more mindful about what works for me recently.
