Personal Stylist has changed my life

Bigboobsnotgoodboobs · 03/05/2025 16:55

Back in October I saw a personal stylist for the very first time. It was a real investment, not cheap (it was at selfridges). I got some amazing clothes and my style totally changed

I have just had a 2nd appointment for “spring/summer” and can actually say it has changed my life.

each time I’ve gone I’ve spent just over £1000 on clothes, but I haven’t really spent much in between

I go on holiday in a couple of weeks and it’s the very first time I’m going away without being in a blind panic about what I’m going to wear, and literally buying a tonne of stuff online, however inappropriate before I go away.

its not cheap but its such an investment in me. At 45 with young children, size 16/18 I’m not lying when I say it’s transformed my life. I used to live in black leggings and black tops. Now my wardrobe is bursting with colour.

not looking for any validation here, but if you’re in a similar situation and just don’t know how to shop for your body type then I’d say absolutely go for it

Is the Good American sizing American? So if I want size 18 UK I order a 14?

Yes that is correct x

So glad this has worked for you! I’m so tempted to do the same if the results are as good as you say!

I’ve gotten into colour theory big time because I realised how some colours make me look ill. One question I had was, do you reckon if I went to a shop and tried on different colours that I could do my colours myself or do you recommend an actual person to do it? Thanks :)

babymamalove · 03/05/2025 22:20

Oh sorry OP I just realised I misread your post! Thought you also got your colours done. Feel free to ignore haha

Greycatclub · 03/05/2025 22:28

Just here really to say Good American jeans are fab!!!! They are pricey but they’re less pricey than others in Selfridges (Paige etc).

PeloMom · 03/05/2025 22:31

Can you provide her details? Is this selfridges London?

Ruthietuthie · 03/05/2025 23:53

I have a personal stylist I work with each change of season. She pulls clothes from multiple places across New York which she knows will suit me. I go up to New York for the day and to a hotel room, where I try everything on. I can also tell her that I need, say, a certain color bag, or more jeans, or a new jacket suitable for work, and she pulls everything.
She has brilliant taste and it saves me so much time. I LOVE always having something to wear.

MaySheWillStayRestingInMyArmsAgain · 04/05/2025 00:05

A colleague of mine lost a lot of weight. She probably went for a size 22 to a 12.

She went to a JL stylist for advice about new clothes to wear for work, and bought several of the suggested items: this was for a professional job.

She then appeared in dresses which were, in my opinion and those of a couple of people who mentioned it to me, both unflattering and unattractive in themselves. That and this thread have put me off ever going to a JL stylist.

CiaoMeow · 04/05/2025 00:55

That's wonderful, OP. And thank you for sharing. I'm tempted myself!

Dressinggown08 · 04/05/2025 01:03

I also had a bad experience with a JL stylist 😬. I hope someone from their hiring dept sees this thread!

DreamTheMoors · 04/05/2025 02:52

Well, I got robbed.
I saw a brilliant ad for an online stylist a few years ago.
I answered maybe 25 questions about my style preferences and my size and paid $150USD and received a pair of ill-fitting leggings and the cheapest top you ever saw.
I got had.
I imagine a lot of people got had.
lol an “online stylist” is probably on me.

MayaPinion · 04/05/2025 05:39

If you want your colours done but you’re on a budget you can ask ChatGPT and upload a photo. You can also ask it for a colour palate. It identified me as a warm spring and I think that’s spot on.

Wow that sounds like a proper treat, I guess if you add up all the smaller purchases and wasted money over the years then this works out as a valuable investment. Do you think you got lucky with your stylist? I had a John Lewis one years ago and it was awful I felt like she was trying to make me look stupid!!

A treat, £2000? And that’s without the clothes cost from the second visit.
Wish my job paid better

@Bigboobsnotgoodboobs thank you so much for posting this . I’ve totally lost my way with clothes and colours and need help . I also need to get back to the gym as well . Your post has inspired me to crack on and sort it out

Happyfeet234 · 04/05/2025 06:02

I’ve had in person stylist which was great and obvs needed for the shopping part and I’ve had online which was also good, but different…but can I recommend ChatGPT? You can upload pics and ask it to ‘act as the worlds best personal stylist’ and it comes back with your colours, body shape etc and you can ask it to make recommendations and it gives you links etc. I was very very impressed and as above I’ve done a few pro in person sessions so knew what to expect. It’s good cos you can keep asking and asking and refining until it knows what you like. It’s very clever.

Bigboobsnotgoodboobs · 03/05/2025 17:07

Yes so the stylist’s time in extra - first appointment was £500 as it included a colour analysis

2nd appointment was £400

you don’t physically go shopping. The stylist has pre selected all of the clothes already based on a questionnaire, this includes body shape, budget, lifestyle (mine was everyday wear - no fancy outfits).

first appointment was jeans, tops, jumpers, trench coat & trainers, shirts and knitwear

2nd appointment was much more extensive, jeans, linen trousers, sandals, trainers, dress, tops, sweatshirts. And pretty much everything was a capsule. I probably got about 20 outfits

this week I wore cream/oatmeal linen trousers with a white blouse (tucked in) and tan sandals. I’ve never had so many compliments

so yes it’s an investment, but off my own back I would would never ever have picked out those clothes

Sounds interesting, do you get any takeaways, e.g. a colour swatch written and advice on your body shape and styles to go for?

LillyPJ · 04/05/2025 06:06

That sounds brilliant! If there was a stylist who could understand my 'style' I'm sure it would be great. But £2000 on clothes plus £900 for two sessions... I bet I've not spent that much on clothes in over 15 years!

Appleblum · 04/05/2025 06:07

£2000 for 20 outfits is amazing!

Great news OP
I tried one at John Lewis and it was absolutely awful. She didn’t bring anything that suited me or would suit my lifestyle. I was very disappointed but I see loads of posters on MN recommending JL

This was my recent experience at John Lewis - I was so hopeful but it was a complete waste of my time.

£2000 for 20 outfits is amazing!

Amazing cheap or amazing expensive? I've no idea - I never buy 'an outfit' (just bits and pieces) and most of my stuff's from charity shops or second hand from ebay.

SchoolDilemma17 · 04/05/2025 06:39

Tbh, I don’t love the clothes she picked for you. Every second mum at school pick-up dresses like this, and for quite a while. I am glad you are happy but £500 for being given stripy and white Whistles tops doesn’t seem worth it for me.

HungryForSnacks · 04/05/2025 06:40

Yep another rubbish JL experience (Oxford St). The ‘stylist’ looked so bored and just brought out random clothes. I tried them on and she barely commented.

My ask was for trendy WFH / School drop-off clothes and she brought out a pink fluffy jumper that cost £350 FFS

It was a free service so no harm done but absolute waste of time!

Here’s the thing, I wasn’t after edgy, fashionable or trendy. That’s not me. My brief was I want a wardrobe for every day that feels timeless. I truly feel that I got that so I’m happy 😃

Yes you get an email with the results of your colour analysis (mine was warm spring) also confirmation of your body shape and what fit/style most suit you
