Personal Stylist has changed my life

Back in October I saw a personal stylist for the very first time. It was a real investment, not cheap (it was at selfridges). I got some amazing clothes and my style totally changed

I have just had a 2nd appointment for “spring/summer” and can actually say it has changed my life.

each time I’ve gone I’ve spent just over £1000 on clothes, but I haven’t really spent much in between

I go on holiday in a couple of weeks and it’s the very first time I’m going away without being in a blind panic about what I’m going to wear, and literally buying a tonne of stuff online, however inappropriate before I go away.

its not cheap but its such an investment in me. At 45 with young children, size 16/18 I’m not lying when I say it’s transformed my life. I used to live in black leggings and black tops. Now my wardrobe is bursting with colour.

not looking for any validation here, but if you’re in a similar situation and just don’t know how to shop for your body type then I’d say absolutely go for it

I only clicked to see if it was Clare Watkins, I follow her on Instagram as well and love her outfits. She seems like such a lovely person too!

that’s fantastic.

Did you have to pay for the service or just the clothes?

How many outfits do you think you got out of the £2k you’ve spent do you think? Do you think the stylist considers how many outfits you’d be able to put together? Workwear or just casual? Did it include shoes?

sorry for all the questions I’m just tempted and curious how it works.

John Lewis provide a stylist for free, no obligation to buy anything and even get a brew/wine!
Highly recommend

@Kangarude
also hugely disappointed with JL the woman I saw was positively bored and running the place down. She had pre selected a rack of wedding outfits for an over 50 nothing I would have been seen dead in

B0D · 03/05/2025 19:29

Oh and no shoes available in size 8

Huckleberries · 03/05/2025 19:29

@Bigboobsnotgoodboobs thanks OP I can see what you mean, if she spends that time and has that knowledge. Thank you

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 03/05/2025 19:45

Do you have to have any in person appointments or is it all online?

I’m not too sure to be honest, her website will give more details xx

If had the money or was in a professional career I would definitely do this. But I probably spend £300 a year on clothes tops and mostly from Vinted or supermarkets so I’m not really the target demographic! Sounds great though.

Carpetty · 03/05/2025 20:03

I think this is a common issue for women in their 40's post children.

We need to learn to love our bodies all over again.

That often involves finding a new style of dressing that fits our new body.

It is so worth doing.
Feeling good about ourselves effects us in every single area of our lives.

I had a personal shopping session at John Lewis; I didn't really like the selection she’d pulled out, and she basically told me more clothes would suit me if I lost weight. (I was a size 14.) Haven’t been back…

Heck that’s awful. The whole point of a stylist is to work around your unique body shape and preferences. She sounds highly unprofessional particularly in commenting on your size negatively (regardless of whether you were 14, 4 or 40). Personally I would have reported her. ♥️

BountifulPantry · 03/05/2025 20:16

Wow I love your photo you look great and it’s so nice to hear you had a great experience and found some great clothes!

Id love to do something like this as I never know what to wear. I have an ok figure but just no « eye » for fashion.

MoominMai · 03/05/2025 20:20

Would be interesting to hear if anyone’s had a good experience with a free John Lewis stylist. It probably won’t be as good as with a paid stylist as from OPs post looks like a ton of work including a colour match goes into it but would be interested in experiences!

I went there (Nottingham John Lewis) to find a dress for a wedding post baby when I felt awful about my shape. She found me an amazing dress, and it was on sale for about £70! Complete bargain... Would definitely do again.

My mum did selfridges personal shopper for a mother of the bride outfit and he found an amazing one as well.

Remember you don't have to buy anything! (Or if you're embarrassed, you can take stuff back the following day 😂)

LilDeVille · 03/05/2025 21:11

God I need to do this. I’m a mess. She sounds like the right balance of honest and kind. The clothes you’ve shared look like things I would just scroll past as look boring, but I know in reality they will look and feel great - I definitely don’t have the eye for shopping! Might book her now for a year’s time or something 😆

Katemax82 · 03/05/2025 21:12

This is why I used to love stitch fix ...

Ah thanks for posting! So good to hear you had a positive experience and your mum too 😊. Definitely a worthwhile consideration then for the budget challenged amongst us!

I’ve ‘done’ John Lewis Personal stylist twice.
The first time was 10 years ago and I needed something below the knee (not the style then) for Henley Regatta. I was 5’10” and a size 10. She brought out petit styles - her argument being that a long Petit dress would be below the knee on me. It was but also way too short in the body- as you might expect.

The second time I was looking for mother of the bride outfit and described my style in advance as pared down, elegant - although I did say I was open to trying new things. She offered frilly, flouncy stuff which, even if it wasn’t completely against what I had described as my style was totally unsuited to a woman of my age (late 50s) and size.

i really want to think John Lewis gives a good service but they’ve let me down twice.

AChangeIsAsGood · 03/05/2025 21:33

@MoominMai me! I ended up spending over the max I'd menyally budgeted. I told her I wanted to be pushed out of my comfort zone and she did give me some new and more current looks. I came back with Whistles jumpsuit, top and jeans, a JL own brand shirt and cashmere jumper. I've worn them to death and used them to look for other clothes since.

Although it could just be that I was such a state that anything would be an improvement.

Bigboobsnotgoodboobs · 03/05/2025 17:13

No I don’t think I got lucky, the stylist doesn’t work for selfridges, she just rents a personal styling room.

she has a large instagram presence and a good website with lots of reviews. I had to wait about 6 months for a free appointment and I know that she is fully booked for the rest of the year

We all want her details now. I was thinking to do John Lewis one but yours sounds much better. Who is it?

Ah interesting that you asked to be pushed out your comfort zone! Good idea actually as you’d know you were in the hands of an expert so to just let them size you up independently as it were. So interesting to know that she was obviously spot on though and those clothes became well loved staples. So in a way even though you went over your budget, it could be that long-term you’ve saved because you got such satisfaction and longevity from what you had maybe.

Thanks for sharing - def a consideration for me when I’m in the right headspace!

Is the Good American sizing American? So if I want size 18 UK I order a 14?
