Royal Style: a day starts well if it starts with Mary of Teck.

The next thread, royal style mavens! The title suggestion was from our last thread. Mary of Teck was never knowingly underdressed or less than bejewelled!

The style of Sophie’s dress suits her but I think that colour washes her out, and I’m not at all keen on that crinkly type of material.

Sophie and William looking rather “county” on a joint visit to the Royal Cornwall Show!

I’m sorry, but the “national day” costumes always really annoy me. I’m sure that traditional Swedish men’s attire was not a business suit, shirt and tie.

So why is it only ever the Swedish ladies that have to dress up? Even little Ines looks as though she has a costume on!

Edited to add that Estelle is looking very grown up all of a sudden.

Women generally like to dress up more than men do, and these costumes were basically made up by the Victorians.

RockaLock · 06/06/2025 16:39

Fair point , but I’m not entirely convinced that the women are dressing up because they really want to, moreso than the men.

You surely wouldn’t get all the women and no men dressing up if that was the case?

Love the shape and length of that skirt on Sophie, and it does look good with the boots, but it’s June. Boots just seem a bit wrong even though it’s not a warm sunny day 🤷‍♀️. I realise they are walking around on grass but even wellies would have been a bit more
appropriate

AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems · 06/06/2025 16:40

There wasn't an equivalent for men as far as I'm aware. They probably just wore whatever smart clothes they had. But I could be wrong.

Greenland has specific men's traditional attire and Fred does wear that.

AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems · 06/06/2025 16:50

(and as regards royalty I don't suppose all of the men necessarily like having to be suited and booted for public occasions either. In the grand scheme of things it's not such a hardship - male or female - given the privilege that comes with their status and standing)

Speaking more generally Scandinavia is as equal as it gets so I think that anyone who complies with dress traditions very likely does so because they genuinely want to.

RockaLock · 06/06/2025 17:12

Thanks, @AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems, that does make sense.

Although the very fact that the Victorians (or Swedish equivalent) invented silly costumes for the women but not for the men seems a bit sexist in itself to me - but I suppose that’s the Victorians for you.

I would have loved to have seen Sophie rock up in wellies! Grin

MotherofPearl · 06/06/2025 17:17

I don’t think that combination works at all on Sophie. Far too many incompatible elements, and I agree that the cord skirt and boots look is better suited to October than June.

Maireas · 06/06/2025 17:20

William looks nice, I like his jacket and shirt combo.

Sophie has a lovely figure and a proper English rose complexion but her outfits often don't do her justice. That pale pink dress up thread is too long (some gorgeous pink pointed shoes peeking out though) and the county show outfit is what she'd probably throw on if she was just going to have a wander and not be photographed.

deeahgwitch · 06/06/2025 20:21

Those pinky nude shoes Sophie wore with the pearl were gorgeous @Lifestooshort71
Does anyone know where they are from?

deeahgwitch · 06/06/2025 20:23

Jimmy Choo have a square toed version but Sophie’s are pointed toe shoes.

deeahgwitch · 06/06/2025 20:26

Found them Jimmy Choo Rosalia65.
Sadly out of my price range at £700 🥲

It's been bally cold and windy on the west coast today. I'm sorry I didn't light the fire this evening. As it is I'm wearing my damart dressing gown over my clothes and a rug doubled up over my knees 🥶. I'd have worn boots today.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 06/06/2025 21:15

Dreadful outfit on Sophie, and William's isn't great either.

Eaumyword · 06/06/2025 22:56

Oh I think William looks fab in that outfit.
Sophie not so much - all elements of her outfit are nice, but together don't quite match. Don't blame her for the boots - it's still quite cold on and off!

Edited

Yeah we want to see the guys in the male national folk costume

That's a great costume. I read somewhere that William and Harry refused to wear kilts in Balmoral.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 07/06/2025 10:18

I have actually never seen photos of either of wearing kilts as adults. Maybe when they were children but not since then. It's always Kate who opts for tartan north of the border!

KiIIingMeDeftly · 07/06/2025 10:22

I thought that was CPV in the picture! It was only after a second look that I realised it aas Estelle. She's shooting up!

Yes, I was about to say they were usually in jeans or chinos in pictures I've seen. Same with Diana.
That was a pet hate of my late Scottish mother, that the RF would get all kitted up in tartan when north of the border. She used to say "I'd never put on a flamenco outfit to visit Spain". It used to grind her gears and I often smile and think of her when I see them tartaned up!

I wonder if the royals have Bavarian style outfits for visits to the German relatives!
