The next thread, royal style mavens! The title suggestion was from our last thread. Mary of Teck was never knowingly underdressed or less than bejewelled!

The Telegraph has an article today about Mary’s fashion. Sorry it’s behind a paywall, but every time I try to use archive lately, it doesn’t work. Maybe someone else can?

eta the link won’t even load now 🙄

waltzingparrot · 04/04/2025 21:01

Has anyone posted this before? Just watched some amazing royal jewellery that I've never seen before. Queen Mary of Teck definitely had the best jewellery - I mean, an 11 row pearl necklace!

It's an interesting watch if you haven't seen it.

Thanks, @waltzingparrot - 11 row pearl necklace, you say?
That's Mary of Teck!

@Maireas She did seem to like wearing all the jewellery she owned all at the same time 😂

KiIIingMeDeftly · 04/04/2025 22:26

Tatler has the lowdown on Isabella of Denmark's 18th birthday celebrations. It all seems a bit excessive considering she isn't even the heir, but we know that her family love birthdays!

Somehow I think Mary got the term less is more completely muddled up & ended up with more is more! 😂

Beketaten · 06/04/2025 02:27

My grandmother (born 1903) always said Queen Mary had some kind scar on her neck and covered it for that reason. No idea why she thought this, she certainly never met Queen Mary (although she did meet the Queen Mother during the war).

Serenster · 06/04/2025 06:57

It was Queen Alexandra (Mary’s MIL) that had the scar on her neck, and so habitually wore chokers. She was another “more is more” royal jewellery wearer. Her coronation portrait makes me laugh - it really does look like she covered herself in glue then rolled around in her vault. 🤣 Her diamond collier is presumably still in the vault somewhere.

Thanks, @Serenster . I didn't know that about Alexandra. That is some Coronation outfit! It must have added quite a few kilos!

Oh really, must have got my queens mixed up! Thanks. Great image of Alexandra.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 06/04/2025 11:33

Alexandra also had a pronounced limp as a result of rheumatic fever and eventually the fashionable ladies at court copied her and it became known as the Alexandra Glide!

Maireas · 06/04/2025 11:42

Really?! That's so funny, isn't it. Not her disability, obviously, but the impact of someone before social media.

I think goitre surgery (thyroidectomy) was a reason for scars on the neck/throat.
(Mostly lurk on here but occasionally post!)

Morning! Yes, and it was less acceptable for women to have scars.
This reminds me of the Agatha Christie "A Murder is Announced".

She was also deaf, so had to live with a couple of disabilities in addition to a perpetually unfaithful husband.

Yes, I heard of her deafness. Also the proclivities of the sociable Bertie.

I went down a rabbit hole on Alexandra this morning because of this thread 🙄😀
She didn’t have it easy with Bertie the philanderer.
Sharing a bedroom as a child with her sister (they were aristocrats but not wealthy ) I’m sure they never dreamed that one would become a Tsarina of Russia and the other Queen of Great Britain.
Perhaps her love of jewels stemmed from her earlier more impoverished life and the hurt she felt about her husband’s affairs. I apologise for my armchair amateur psychology.

Maireas · 06/04/2025 15:30

No apologies, @deeahgwitch ! It's genuinely very interesting. I was reading about the Tsar's sister, Xenia, who lived in somewhat reduced circumstances in Frogmore Cottage following the revolution. I think there were many impoverished aristocrats before and after, for many reasons.

And his other sister ended her days in a modest flat above a hair salon in Toronto! So she had Alexandra's experience in reverse.

Goodness! She certainly did.
After the war, Princess Michael of Kent went to Australia with her mother, who then worked as a hairdresser, by coincidence.

Thank goodness for the stylish European Royals!!! They never disappoint - Leti, Mary and Maxima all are stylish, and sometimes quirky (Maxima!!!). Out and about, being visible. So little to view from our Royals now - a shame.

Starting the day with Leti. I like this outfit, the red sweater is a great shade and I like the Adolfo Dominguez skirt, with the fine red detail. Low heeled slingbacks. It's not too formal, but not casual. She looks really good, imo.
