Lip fillers- are the agony?

Whohasseenmyglasses · 24/03/2025 10:45

I might be having some. I'm in my early 60s and my lips are not much more now than a thin line. Very ageing and lipstick stays on for 2 minutes.

I don't want 'overdone' obviously and would go to my dentist who's trained and experienced in fillers. I've already had a touch of filler on my chin (side of mouth).

I've quite a high pain threshold but have heard lips are very painful.

Anyone?

They are a bit painful, but not horrific. You will usually be given numbing cream to put on first, which helps a lot. What filler are you planning on getting? Soft fillers like Restylene Kysse are less painful than firm fillers like Juvaderm Ultra, for example.

AliBaliBee1234 · 24/03/2025 12:23

I just get 0.5ml and have a high pain theshold but i'm not going to lie, I find it unbelievably painful.

It's over quickly, you can breathe through it and put it this way ... i have gone back for a top up.

My lady used to use a better numbing cream but doesn't anymore, that made a huge difference.

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 24/03/2025 12:29

I am trained to do filler but I've never had it in my lips. I would say its definitely on the more painful end of uncomfortable. Ive never had anyone that couldn’t complete the treatment though and as someone stated above your practitioner should apply numbing cream.

You can buy Emla cream yourself online, just apply it for 15 mins before your next appt.

It looks absolutely awful OP so I wouldn’t!! Just leave your face as it is.

PilatesPeach · 24/03/2025 12:31

Not at all for me. The therapist applies Emla cream and lets it work for about 15 mins. I feel the needle but no pain, just a sensation of it. There are quite a few jabs though I think I have around 6 in each lip.

I have to disagree with this comment. Many examples of overfilled lip do look awful, however done properly and using the correct amount of filler for that individual they can enhance a persons appearance and look very natural.

I still have a numbing cream applied, it's just not as good as the one she used to use, not sure what it was called

I disagree. I think people associate fillers with those huge overdone lips. Done well, they can look completely natural and lovely.

She didn't ask your opinion on whether to get them or what you think they look like. She asked whether they hurt.

ConstanceMartensCat · 24/03/2025 14:00

I have a v high pain threshold and I hate having my lip filler done. It’s not particularly sore just an absolutely gross feeling. Worth it though (and I have a tiny amount which looks v natural and just replaces the fullness I had when younger).

Whohasseenmyglasses · 25/03/2025 07:18

Thanks for the input. I've not decided 100% to have this but was looking for experiences. On balance, I'm wary.

I'm always struck by some 'before and after' photos posted here on MN, on lips.

Sadly most of the 'before' photos show lips 2 times the size of mine now 🙄

Come back and tell us if you went for it, and how you found it op. Toying with the idea myself as I get older, never knew lips seem to get thinner as you age and I just want them back as they were!

greatfrontage · 25/03/2025 07:32

Once they use numbing cream it’s an unpleasant prickling feeling, like tiny elective shocks (have you ever had thread veins zapped via electrolysis'?), but once your practitioner is good and keeps you distracted with chat like during a smear, it’s absolutely fine.

Couldbetheday · 25/03/2025 07:45

They never look right as they distort natural proportions, even if they are so called subtle.

But I'd imagine the pain is fleeting?

I'd be more worried about them feeling 'alien' in my body afterwards and being stuck with them. I'd want to claw them out of my face if they felt wrong !!

Also the migrating thing makes me shudder..

But I'm a wuss.

greatfrontage · 25/03/2025 08:38

@Couldbetheday and @Squiggles23 how do you even know? It’s easy to spot OTT or badly done ones, but you simply can’t tell when it’s a very small amount, properly done.

When you say “oh I can ALWAYS tell” then yes, well done you, you’ve seen a bad one. But you CAN’T tell if it’s good. That is literally the point.

For lips as the OP describes, half a ml will restore the sort of volume she had 10 or even 20 years ago. She doesn’t have some sort of responsibility to her sex to show her age if she feels low about something pretty low key like this.

My lips vanished when I hit perimenopause and I got half a ml of Juvederm in them to replace what had gone. Haven’t needed a top up in ages. Every so often I ask my practitioner if I need a one and she says no. I don’t mind my wrinkles but the lips thing really got me down.

PilatesPeach · 25/03/2025 10:17

A small amount done well looks great.

People wear make up, dye their hair, get false nails, fake tans but the minute people talk about fillers and sometimes botox people go on about the treatments looking unnatural.

If you only want to look natural then you do nothing but if you want to feel great then you do what you want.

So you can avoid all this by going to a registered nurse/doctor who has a clinic and is fully qualified. One of the people who did mine is also a surgeon.

You don't feel them and they only migrate if you overdo it. 0.5ml is nothing, it just slightly restores the shape.

Also, how do you know they never look right? You probably don't even realise most people have had it done.

They are painful but worth it imo.

Lomoto · 25/03/2025 12:37

I’ve had a bit of lip filler in the past. You can definitely have it and look completely natural. However it was very painful and I swore I’d never have it again. Although looking at these responses maybe I will if the numbing cream is strong enough.

Couldbetheday · 25/03/2025 12:56

Sorry, they never look natural because they're not.

But if it makes you happy, go for it.

blueberrysoap · 25/03/2025 14:09

I had so many people tell me it didn’t hurt but honestly was one of the most painful things I have ever done. It’s been 3 years since I had it and I still remeber how painful it was

retirementislooming · 25/03/2025 15:24

Gosh, I wouldn't do it. It's always obvious!

I'm always struck by how the 'before' looks so much better than the 'after', and I'm sure your case will be the same.

Fabellini · 25/03/2025 15:28

I found it incredibly painful, and it looked so “natural” that I couldn’t even see much improvement myself, and not a single other person noticed! Not worth doing again in my opinion, but I tried it, so at least I know for sure it’s not for me.
