Lip fillers- are the agony?

Whohasseenmyglasses · 24/03/2025 10:45

I might be having some. I'm in my early 60s and my lips are not much more now than a thin line. Very ageing and lipstick stays on for 2 minutes.

I don't want 'overdone' obviously and would go to my dentist who's trained and experienced in fillers. I've already had a touch of filler on my chin (side of mouth).

I've quite a high pain threshold but have heard lips are very painful.

Anyone?

Ok... as I said, if they give you confidence then good for you!

Confused as to why you're being so aggressive.

FYI, I'm not bitter old or bootlike. I'm lucky to be youthful, content and naturally pretty.

I doubt it, I'm not a fan of the fake look.

Seems to be fashionable though. I guess I'm lucky I'm happy with my natural face.

I find it stingy but not painful. The numbing cream is good. Some offer dental blocks.

Now you're just being defensive.

What on earth am I meant to be jealous of?

OP, if you look up Alice Hart Davis from the tweakments guide, she has had some lip plumping procedure not long ago. Or at least I think that was the aim. I personally couldn't see any difference but she seemed pleased with the subtle results. That procedure might be an option for you?
All on instagram and she also has a website. Her day job is basically to find out about all these sort of procedures, test them and describe the process.
She is a very nice lady doing some interesting experiments and it is actually interesting to listen/read/watch some of her experiences. I know a lot I don't need to know about a million procedures since I discovered her a good few years ago.

Yes, I know there are other treatments out there like 'volumisers' or special moisturisers. However, her own lips are extremely full if what we see are her own without anything done! I know of her and I'm familiar with the places she uses.

Whatever she had done was showing on instagram maybe end of last year? Not that long ago, but I can't remember when. Honestly I couldn't see any difference but you are right, her lips always look naturally well defined even without makeup.
Sorry, I'm not much help in the practical sense you need.I hope you find the right solution with minimal or no pain/discomfort.

Yeah but isn't it madness that people put themselves through pain for an entirely unnecessary procedure.

No, not really.

I'm covered in tattoos and multiple piercings. All painful, but I like them.

You are confusing fillers that replace lost volume with fillers that completely over inflate and attempt to restructure features.
filler that replaces lost volume in the lips is subtle and as it only replaces what was lost, it looks natural. It’s like someone who has had post mastectomy breast reconstruction looking natural vs Jordan.

carrotsandtomatoes · 26/03/2025 22:02

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 25/03/2025 20:18

They never look natural

It’s literally impossible to claim this. You wouldn’t know if they ALL look fake would you. As you’d only notice the unnatural looking ones.
It’s one of those unachievable assertions or unviable claims.

NeutralBee · 26/03/2025 22:09

If you are going to a dentist you may be able to opt for a dental block to numb the lips completely.

Whohasseenmyglasses · 27/03/2025 11:36

Chuchoter · 25/03/2025 17:57

The problem you face is that if you have your lips done, which you may or may not be pleased with you will then move on and look at another part of your face and want that 'fixed'.

Unnatural plumper lips are going to look odd on your 60 something face. I've seen it and it looks strange.

You'll waste hours of your life peering in the mirror

trying to turn back time just like King Canute did trying to turn back the tide.

I'm only slightly younger than you and my lips haven't lost volume but they have lost some definition which can make lips appear less full than what they actually are.

I use an eyebrow pencil in a hazel colour just in the very outer edge of my lips, not to over line them but just to give them definition.
It creates a natural looking shadow effect which makes my lips look fuller.

I have on occasion used fake tan around my lips in the same way and that also gives an illusion of fuller lips but still looks natural .

Bit patronising maybe? @Chuchoter

I don't have the problem you think I'd have.

The point is that if lips are obviously filled, they are overdone. It's ridiculous to think that ANYONE of any age would want lips that are obviously filled.

What you see on slebs' faces or very young women, their overdone lips are not how most women want to look.

I had some cheek fillers in the past and no one- not even close family or friends could tell. The place I went to - one of the best in the UK- specialises in 'underdone and subtle.'

Take your King Canute analogy elsewhere.

You could say the same about lots of things, for example waxing your legs or having your eyebrows plucked.

I had mine done a few years ago only the minimum amount, I liked the look of them however it’s very painful and it only lasted about 6 months, the pain more than anything stopped me wanting to to again.

Gettingbysomehow · 27/03/2025 13:32

I'm 63 and have a very subtle upper lip done as i have such thin lips now. I avoid the trout pout at all costs. Just lightly bee stung.
I don't feel injections really, it stings a bit but nothing emla cream can't fix.

TheFatCatsWhiskers1 · 27/03/2025 14:45

Not trying to put you off, but one thing to consider is that the thinner the lips are, the more obvious filler can appear, especially from the side. Here's an example of someone with a genuinely thin top lip https://www.reddit.com/r/PlasticSurgery/comments/1dpxhj0/lip_injections_on_very_thin_lips/

The comments say how natural it looks, but to me it's really obvious, especially in the July 2023 pic.

I have a pretty thin top lip so I overline the cupids bow slightly. If I were going to have a cosmetic procedure to change it I'd have a lip lift because that's increasing the vertical height of the lip, whereas filler doesn't really do that. Not much help if both lips are equally though.

I think her lips once healed and not swollen look a whole lot more balanced with the filler.

I think they look overdone at the end and I'd call them' duck lips'!

Weird, if you're so youthful, content and naturally pretty, that you felt the need to come onto a thread literally asking a specific question that you couldn't answer, just to tell us that you're, oh, right, youthful, content and naturally pretty.

@Whohasseenmyglasses I had a tiny bit a couple years ago. Not enough to see any real difference, so I haven't bothered again, but with some numbing cream, it wasn't particularly painful. It was done by a maxillofacial surgeon, though, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

capybaraqueen · 27/03/2025 16:26

With numbing cream: agony.

With a dental block ie proper injections to numb you: a dream.

I can't believe people even attempt it without a dental block!!!

See. It’s all subjective. I think she looks miles better at the end because she actually has lips. Before she had no top lip and it didn’t look great.
