Lip fillers- are the agony?

I might be having some. I'm in my early 60s and my lips are not much more now than a thin line. Very ageing and lipstick stays on for 2 minutes.

I don't want 'overdone' obviously and would go to my dentist who's trained and experienced in fillers. I've already had a touch of filler on my chin (side of mouth).

I've quite a high pain threshold but have heard lips are very painful.

Anyone?

It just looks awful OP … please don’t do it. Maybe speak to a beautician or use lip liner?

fancyfrogs · 27/03/2025 22:04

I don’t find it agony at all. I’ve had 0.5ml put in 4 or 5 times now (8-12 months apart I’d say). Numbing cream works wonders, there might be some spots you don’t feel at all and some might be a bit stingy. But I’ve always found it relatively quick and absolutely fine tbh.

StubbornStool · 27/03/2025 22:06

It def hurts. But doesn’t last long

See. It’s all subjective. I think she looks miles better at the end because she actually has lips. Before she had no top lip and it didn’t look great.

I agree she had no top lip and they could be evened out but from the side they look too 'pouty for my taste.

You see if I had lips like your 'before' I'd be thrilled to bits and not be thinking about this ! Mine are around half the size of your 'before' pic. Or less!

It looks absolutely awful OP so I wouldn’t!! Just leave your face as it is.

This reminds me of my late mum launching into a diatribe about how awful people with Botox look, how fake it is, how you can always tell etc etc. when she eventually paused for breath I told her I'd been having Botox every 4 months for over 2 years. She was so set in her opinion that she refused to believe me. When she died a few years later I was still having regular Botox and she was in complete denial about it.

Shesafancyflapjack · 28/03/2025 08:36

I’m 57 and have had it twice, 0.5 was not enough to restore my upper lip so I later had 1ml and was pleased with the results. It’s not very long lasting and it is extremely painful, to the point I wanted to push the doctors hand away, it’s more than just a sting, and requires lots of injection sites, some more sensitive than others. If there is an improved numbing cream that might sway my decision to have it again, but it’s the only procedure I still remember with a wince. Having said that, you deserve to feel good about yourself, ignore the ‘duck lip’ comments, that’s only applicable to those who have a huge amount in and want the extreme look, not an enhancement and reshape like you.

Howldens · 28/03/2025 08:39

OP, my dentist does my lip filler and uses injections to numb the area (the same type as if you are having a filling). The lip filler doesn’t hurt at all. But the numbing injection can be a tiny bit sore. She said she hated causing her patients pain & so prefers personally to do this. Your dentist might offer it too.

Everything looks awful when it’s overdone, but subtle fillers and botox etc enhance or replace what was lost, not make it look too much.

I love a scroll of that plastic surgery subreddit from time to time. My favourite posts are the 'what can be done about my really thin lips' ones (I know PP didn't say this) alongside a photo of someone with huge lips. This is a decent tutorial on overlining them slightly I only do the cupid's bow lightly and then the outer edges of my bottom lip, which is actually part of my lip but it's paler than the rest. When I lined the entire top lip I felt there was a risk of it being apparent after much scrutinising with a handheld mirror, but just the cupid's bow doesn't appear to be noticeable at all.

Re lipstick, I cover my lips with vaseline for 10 mins, then scrub off lightly with a damp flannel to exfoliate. I do the lip lining then lightly colour the rest of my lip in with the lip liner. Blot, apply lipstick, leave for 10 mins so it stains, blot (I blot a lot as I don't like a full-on lipstick look). I finish off with a non-oily lip balm (the oil dissolves the lipstick) like this www.boots.com/no7-protect-and-perfect-lip-care-10ml-10288363. The lipstick grips better to the lipliner and if it does rub off a bit, the lip liner has stained your lips by then so it's not as noticeable.

I’m sure they’re lovely. Give it a whirl and see what you like. It’s not gonna kill you or last forever.

With numbing cream: agony.

With a dental block ie proper injections to numb you: a dream.

I can't believe people even attempt it without a dental block!!!

I personally hate the numbing injections. I usually have emla and that's fine, I've also had them done with nothing, and I'd actually rather have nothing than the numbing injections.

Pyjamatimenow · 01/04/2025 23:42

Not too bad. Hurts more when they do the Cupid bow area

Whohasseenmyglasses · 24/03/2025 12:07

anyone?

I know you're out there!

Truthfully, I had one go at it. (Thin top lip) And it was sharp, stingy and eyes watery (I gave birth twice with nowt but gas and air so good pain threshold)

I look in the mirror now and think 'this is me. I'm pretty. But I'll never be beautiful . I am me. It's how it is ' I've come to self acceptance. Can you ?

Duck lips do indeed look atrocious. I love seeing other fellow women parading their beauty! Good for 'us'. But I genuinely don't think lip fillers look good on women. It looks so obvious and false. I'm yet to see ones that don't

RonaldMcDonald · 02/04/2025 05:23

Do it.
Increase them by .25ml of filler per quarter or 4 months until you are happy with the effect.
Do not see the small amount being used as a waste see it as a cost of having nice lips, where you control the inflation and you and everyone else for that matter gets used to how it looks. Be clear you want it into the body of the lips as filler migrates. It is also hydrophilic and so a small amount every three/four months will show you what you need and let things settle.
If you need other touches of support use the rest of the syringes in those areas. Personally I saw a lot of benefit from the peri fossa being filled a little and it did slightly lift the lip too which was helpful.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 02/04/2025 06:11

I had them done 3 years ago to restore some lost volume. I had 1ml across both lips. Had numbing cream but it was undeniably painful. It doesn’t last that long and you just breathe through it. They settled down nicely after 3 days but 24 hours afterwards the swelling was hugely noticeable on me and I had no choice but to go into work and own up when asked. So I’d recommend getting them done when you have a few clear days afterwards to let them settle if you’d rather keep the whole thing discreet.

I’m hoping to get this this once mine start losing volume, is the end result quite natural? I’m hoping because I’ll already have the lip skin that it won’t look stretched and fake.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 02/04/2025 10:56

They’ve been like this pretty much since I had them done. Not planning on any more unless they thin significantly.

The lady on Reddit with the really thin lips looks great. So what if it shows. It's nice.

CharlotteCChapel · 16/12/2025 09:43

If nobody notices, what's the point?. Ive had thin lips on one side, top right, to the extent that aren't really there. It's never occurred to me to have work done. They're part of me and as such I'll keep them.

Good for you. Some people choose to be different. Stop the press.
