Lip fillers- are the agony?

I might be having some. I'm in my early 60s and my lips are not much more now than a thin line. Very ageing and lipstick stays on for 2 minutes.

I don't want 'overdone' obviously and would go to my dentist who's trained and experienced in fillers. I've already had a touch of filler on my chin (side of mouth).

I've quite a high pain threshold but have heard lips are very painful.

Anyone?

Yes pretty painful and the swelling lasts a few days so don’t plan any socials for straight afterwards.

Thanks for the input. I've not decided 100% to have this but was looking for experiences. On balance, I'm wary.

I'm always struck by some 'before and after' photos posted here on MN, on lips.

Sadly most of the 'before' photos show lips 2 times the size of mine now 🙄

This was me, now I have almost average sized lips instead of pretty much no lips.

Once they use numbing cream it’s an unpleasant prickling feeling, like tiny elective shocks (have you ever had thread veins zapped via electrolysis'?), but once your practitioner is good and keeps you distracted with chat like during a smear, it’s absolutely fine.

Yes I have had leg veins done that way!

Gosh, I wouldn't do it. It's always obvious!

Everyone says that and told me how lumpy and overfilled my lips were
Except I’ve never had filler

Sorry, they never look natural because they're not.

But if it makes you happy, go for it.

Of course it can look natural in the same way good hair colour and lash serum enhanced lashes can look natural.

I had a small amount of filler last year. I found the numbing sensation weird but it didn't hurt at all. I really like the result; it just smoothed out the lines above my upper lip which was what I wanted. Didn't regret it at all and I don't think anyone noticed.

jan2310 · 25/03/2025 16:25

Should add im in my late 50s

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 25/03/2025 16:35

Yes they are painful. Also, I had late onset allergic reaction and my face blew up 4 months after having them. I had to have them dissolved which is awful and takes months and never really removes all the filler.
Since then I have had allergic reactions to other things. And each time my top lip on one side blows up.
I have had to have 2 a&e trips, 3 loads of antibiotics, 2 lots of steroids and countless anti histamines and a trip to the allergy clinic!

Apparently it's more common than people think.

I would buy a nice lipstick and be grateful for your health.

milliemermaid · 25/03/2025 17:14

I am also thinking about this.
I saw an interview with Daisy May Cooper recently, she said that she has had hers done, and I think they look great.

saveforthat · 25/03/2025 17:16

EmmaEmEmz · 24/03/2025 13:13

She didn't ask your opinion on whether to get them or what you think they look like. She asked whether they hurt.

Yeah but isn't it madness that people put themselves through pain for an entirely unnecessary procedure.

Stressfordays · 25/03/2025 17:23

I didn't find they hurt at all really. The numbing cream was that good my entire mouth was numb though like I'd been to the dentist. I'm going back for round 2 Saturday so couldn't of been that bad anyway! I had no pain after either, not even with the swelling. I loved the swelling, that's why I'm going back for another .5ml 🤣

MadKittenWoman · 25/03/2025 17:39

I was really scared when I had mine done (like you, early 60s with a thin lip, mainly on one side) but it was actually fine and I was pleased with the result which is really subtle. She used numbing cream which worked well. I have fillers in my cheeks to get rid of nasolabial and marionette lines, and Botox in my 11s, twice a year. I am due a cheek top-up soon but I don’t need a lip top-up yet. I have also had filler in my jawline which was more painful, but nothing too bad. You’ll be fine.

Well no one's going to ask you to your face are they? That would be rude.

But if they give you a confidence boost then good for you.

The problem you face is that if you have your lips done, which you may or may not be pleased with you will then move on and look at another part of your face and want that 'fixed'.

Unnatural plumper lips are going to look odd on your 60 something face. I've seen it and it looks strange.

You'll waste hours of your life peering in the mirror

trying to turn back time just like King Canute did trying to turn back the tide.

I'm only slightly younger than you and my lips haven't lost volume but they have lost some definition which can make lips appear less full than what they actually are.

I use an eyebrow pencil in a hazel colour just in the very outer edge of my lips, not to over line them but just to give them definition.
It creates a natural looking shadow effect which makes my lips look fuller.

I have on occasion used fake tan around my lips in the same way and that also gives an illusion of fuller lips but still looks natural .

And plucking your eyebrows.

And plucking your eyebrows.

I haven't got piercings and don't pluck my eyebrows but I can't imagine either are as painful as injecting something into your lips

ILostMyself · 25/03/2025 18:34

I had it done a few years ago and had no idea it was painful, so that was a shock. Thought it would be similar to Botox but it hurt sooo much. I said never again but then saw another lady last year and, although it was painful, it was much more bearable this time (and she was a lot quicker which helped).

Unfortunately though I bruised massively the last time and it’s lasted three weeks. Three weeks of trying to cover it with make-up/lipstick but it was so bad you could still see it. I don’t feel like the look of them is worth the pain and possible bruising so I won’t be getting again!

Lostmyway86 · 25/03/2025 18:48

I've done it once and never again, the most painful thing ever(and I've given birth twice!). I got a lip flip instead now, bit of botox above the lip. Doesn't last long but far less painful and gives me a boost!

@Couldbetheday and @Squiggles23 how do you even know? It’s easy to spot OTT or badly done ones, but you simply can’t tell when it’s a very small amount, properly done.

When you say “oh I can ALWAYS tell” then yes, well done you, you’ve seen a bad one. But you CAN’T tell if it’s good. That is literally the point.

For lips as the OP describes, half a ml will restore the sort of volume she had 10 or even 20 years ago. She doesn’t have some sort of responsibility to her sex to show her age if she feels low about something pretty low key like this.

My lips vanished when I hit perimenopause and I got half a ml of Juvederm in them to replace what had gone. Haven’t needed a top up in ages. Every so often I ask my practitioner if I need a one and she says no. I don’t mind my wrinkles but the lips thing really got me down.

This is true. My SIL had lip fillers and various other bits done. I just noticed she looked well and prettier. I am very visual - I noticed shit! She confided, telling me what she had had. Her husband hadn't even noticed.

EffinMagicFairy · 25/03/2025 20:09

Perhaps consider a lip blush, semi permanent make-up, just puts back lip definition lost by the ageing process. Looks very bright for first couple of days but softens down to a natural look after about a week and can last 18mths +

JustFeedMeCake · 25/03/2025 20:16

I have just my top lip done every few years as my bottom lip is fine. I prefer injections rather than by cannula which I found far more painful. It is a subtle look, done by a doctor, she also does my Botox and the difference to my face is amazing. My lips match in size. Go for it!

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 25/03/2025 20:18

They never look natural
