Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

ForZanyAquaViewer · 15/02/2025 14:32

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

@NotAlwaysasitSeems , trainers with a V on the side Campo | Women's Trainers and Shoes

@somewhereinsuburbia , I need a link to gnome like shoes.

Thank you, I'm not up with the trends evidently, I don't think I want to be 🤭

@LittleRedRidingHoody I used to work in fashion & certain things you just recognise.

Exactly! I just can't un-know now, which would be useful sometimes 😂

A fairly insecure mum at DSs school was telling me how much she LOVES her new Lululemon leggings when they were very VERY clearly dupes and I found it so awkward to keep my mouth shut and just say nice things.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:42

I thought Vejas got popular cause they were pleather.

What an interesting school. Apart from Homo Sapiens, your school has other races? Klingons? Neanderthals? Southern Apes?

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Oxfordshire?

I wear a gorgeous per una coat, straight leg jeans and boots with a heel, black cross over bag. Gold hooped earrings, lippy on and hair brushed. I'm a Glam-ma not a Mummy tho

😂good on ya❤️

RafaFan · 15/02/2025 17:45

The "hockey mom" and "dance mom" cliques where I live in Canada are all wearing those knee-length sleeveless puffy coats. Personally I like to have sleeves on my coats in sub-zero temperatures!

That sounded like a foreign language to me😂

Actually you are not correct. White socks have always been hideous items. For sports, with white trainers they are just about acceptable but still ick inducing.

White socks pulled up to mid-calf have never ever been acceptable and never will be. I've felt strongly about this matter since the 90's and the fact that the most hideous item of clothing in history has become trendy and I have to see it every single day proves to me that there is no God. I feel that same about white pants and felt the same about white face masks.

I love how passionate you are about this! 🤣

2 looks depending on which side of the village you live in. Wealthier side: sleeveless puffa coat, Breton jumper, little dog that you are taking for a walk, coffee not in a Stanley cup,

Less wealthy side: Stanley cup, leggings with the white socks, hair tied up, eyebrows microbladed and lips filled. Or leggings you can see the knickers through, hoodie, top bun

Very interesting! My school pick up clothes tend to be much closer to the less wealthier look you describe (minus the Stanley cup & fillers!)

stillnotdark · 15/02/2025 17:47

Rural Norfolk village but my Dc are in their 20's
Back in the day anything went, still seems the same
I have gone on the school pick up with a crossbody Mulberry though Blush

Kilroywashere · 15/02/2025 17:49

Wellies and grubby anoraks or office wear, depending on whether they've got to get back to the farm or work in the town nearby.

ClassicBBQ · 15/02/2025 17:49

Crocs or nikes, long white socks over shit-coloured leggings that show off cameltoe, dryrobe or long black puffy gilet. Hair tied up really high.

EcruCardigan · 15/02/2025 16:54

They are bad for your feel as there is no arch support. They look naff.

This is such a funny reason to dislike the look of something on others. Obviously you consider comfort for yourself but I can’t say I’ve considered whether I like/dislike someone else’s shoes based on whether their arches are supported 😆

LadyRoughDiamond · 15/02/2025 17:51

Mixed bag here:
The athleisure Mums with/without Uggs and dry robe (usually on the way to a class or run)
The country Mums (mix of outdoor wear, tweedy bits and posh country boots or just riding gear)
The eco Mums (lots of Toast/Lucy & Yak with Birkenstocks and something woven by a friend with their own loom)
Everyone else (straight cut jeans, parka or puffa, trainers - old stool Nike Hi Tops, New Balance, Veja).
No handbags as we’re all rural and going everywhere by car.

Edited to correct bloody autocorrect

I can’t say I’ve seen anyone wearing vejas in years.

Same! Very surprised. And I’m in SW! Much more new balance or adidas sambas

NotAlwaysasitSeems · 15/02/2025 16:38

God no, leave the visible over the legging/jeans or whatever socks in the 90s. When I see anybody in those, I cannot help but think about my old trunchbull PE teacher, and shudder 😂

Trainer/ankle socks all the way for me.

Edited

The trainer sock / pulled up crew sock divide is famously the main indicator to distinguish between millennials and Gen Z Grin

lollilou2 · 15/02/2025 17:55

Nike 95’s/110’s, leggings and moncler/Canada goose coats.

Blankscreen · 15/02/2025 17:56

Veja trainers are the most uncomfortable trainers I've ever owned.

They were definitely mum uniform round here for a bit but that has waned the last few years.

There serms to be more of a mix of styles now where I live.

I spend most of my life trudging round in an equidry coat looking a bit worzel gummidge ike so no style points here 😂

EcruCardigan · 15/02/2025 17:57

@Newposter180 , if you read my post properly, you'd see that I don't say I dislike the look because of the lack of arch support.

I dislike them because they are completely flat.

Converse x Coraline Chuck 70

The ones that aren't completely flat look even worse because they lack what made the Converse originally look cool.

No, she also said they look naff, so basically they're not comfortable and look displeasing as well. I think as another pp said we're starting to see less of them, so the craze must be ending unsurprisingly.
