Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

ForZanyAquaViewer · 15/02/2025 14:32

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Not really, mix of jeans, joggers, dresses, leggings. Coats of choice are dry robes, helly Hansen sailing jackets (or other sailing jackets) puffer coats sometimes. Shoes are pretty random, outdoorsy often. I run a toddler group twice a week

There are a lot of diverse styles here, but I only do the school run a couple of times a week when I'm working from home (and I look like an utter tramp on these days).

I've seen the leggings and white socks look, people in joggers, people dressed smartly on the way to work, people in work unform, straight or barrell cut jeans - anything goes.

Haven't seen anyone in vejas for a few years either.

Are Vejas fabric, a type of brand? I just buy trainers that are supportive and what I also like the look of, couldn't care a less what is "in."

LilacPony · 15/02/2025 17:27

Black leggings, long socks with leggings tucked in, trainers, hoody/jumper and a long (nearly to the ankle) gillet 😅

mitogoshigg · 15/02/2025 17:28

And extra marks for having your yachts name on your sailing jackets!

Sounds very posh- Mulberry bags.

No- where I live they seem to all be in leggings and down coats, some with Uggs, but mostly trainers.

Medium town, south of London, but very expensive.

I reckon you live in East Dulwich

Good guess. One of the North London equivalents!

Bbq1 · 15/02/2025 17:30

How do some people know the make/brand of every item of clothing a person is wearing?Trainers are obvious but not everything else. Are they checking labels?!

WhatTheKey · 15/02/2025 17:30

This thread is the first time I've heard of Veja!

AliasGrape · 15/02/2025 17:31

I don’t think there’s any one set ‘uniform’ but then I don’t know that I pay that much attention really, I feel like I recognise quite a lot of the outfits described here, so the answer is probably a bit of all of the above.

9 times out of 10 I’m in leggings and a puffer coat and either trainers or mini Ugg style boots (yes, just to horrify everyone further they’re not even real Uggs) First to admit it’s a fugly look, but it’s warm and comfortable and I don’t give a shit - it’s winter, freezing and usually raining. Maybe I’ll make more of an attempt to look better once we get some sunshine.

Mulberry bags everywhere. It appears to be the standard everyday bag. I’m in Wimbledon, whereabouts are you?

Up the road in Streatham, slightly different crowd 😂 still pretty middle class but I don't remember everyone having designer bags when my kids were very small or now (my kids are young primary age).

I wouldn't want to take an expensive bag (Mulberry totes are about £800 aren't they?) to a playgroup. Kids could scratch it up / it could get stolen. How do you even wear a tote bag when pushing a buggy? But then again I don't really see the point of £800 handbags. I've had a few expensive handbags in the past but I don't find them practical and they don't stay pristine for long. I don't see people wearing designer bags at work either (professional role/office in the City).

VivaVictoria · 15/02/2025 17:32

Wimbledon is posh @ForZanyAquaViewer
So is 'having help' in the house. Or owning a bag costing £1K

Most of the country does not live like that.

They're living in clothes bought at Tesco or Sainsbury, and won't have even heard of Veja trainers.

You're in a little bubble.

LostittoBostik · 15/02/2025 17:33

@Allihavetodoisdream Ha!
I hadn't heard of Blundstone but guessed from the rest. I've just looked them up and now want a pair

Picle · 15/02/2025 17:33

Long back puffa coat
Pompom woolly hat
Small crossbody bag
Hiking boots or New Balance Vaygo trainers
Leggings or loose fit jeans
T shirt or jumper
Flask or takeout of tea or coffee

Scottishskifun · 15/02/2025 17:34

Around us in Winter it's whatever is warm so typically a ski jacket/warm coat, woollen hat and winter boots it's way too cold to be stood around in trainers. When it snows it changes to snow boots!

Can't say there is a mum dress code as such here mostly because it's been sub 7 degrees for the last 3 months

Me too. I’m hanging on for the gnome-wear. Just a link will do. I’m desperate to know!

Well, hoodies often promote the company, costs/gilets have small emblems, leggings almost all now have a distinction somewhere that tells you where they're from. There are often also viral or popular pieces.

I wouldn't go looking or asking (unless I LOVED the piece!) but I've been 'scaling up' my own look over the last year or so and can now pretty accurately identify a fair number of brands based on logo/style.

Also sambas and that other one somebody mentioned. I just pick trainers up and think do they look nice, are they comfortable 😂 I'm a bit shit with knowing the name of the style though, occasionally I do.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:36

@VivaVictoria tbf not all of Wimbledon is Wimbledon village. Many who live there also wear Sainsbury's clothes.

Gnome? I had some leather pointed toe ballerina pumps years ago for work which l mistakenly thought looked nice at the time. This is what I am imagining? 😂

I feel like they were super fashionable for a short amount of time in certain circles, but there was no rhyme or reason to it (eg one group of friends were into them, another similar group never heard of them)

I'm surprised they're still a thing to be honest. I'd forgotten til this thread but I had really wanted a pair and never pulled the trigger! Happy about that now 😂

I would say that uniform was worn about 10 years ago except for the Tote. 10 years ago it was the interchanging strap (mainly striped) on a cross body bag.
