Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Wimbledon is posh @ForZanyAquaViewer
So is 'having help' in the house. Or owning a bag costing £1K

Most of the country does not live like that.

They're living in clothes bought at Tesco or Sainsbury, and won't have even heard of Veja trainers.

You're in a little bubble.

Edited

All very true. However, I’m not sure how that’s relevant? I didn’t ask if everyone dressed the same as us, I’ve asked about the different ways mums dress where they happen to be. And, from the responses, it would appear that some places have ‘uniforms’ and some don’t.

Last summer I looked around and nearly everyone was wearing Lucy and yak dungarees and Birkenstocks

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 15/02/2025 18:02

I draw the line at Lucy and Yaks. They make literally everyone look like an overgrown toddler.

@Allihavetodoisdream Ha!
I hadn't heard of Blundstone but guessed from the rest. I've just looked them up and now want a pair

I know. I do like them. They are comfy and built to last as well.

EcruCardigan · 15/02/2025 18:04

@PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat , I don't look like an overgrown toddler in anything.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 15/02/2025 18:04

Relatively poor southern coast - a mix here.

Chunky trainers, athleisure (leggings with the ruching up the arse), top bun, fake nails, eyelashes and over plumped lips - one group.

Random jeans/comfy trousers/fleeces/raincoats - other group

Lots of dryrobes. Fake for majority, a few private school mums wear the real thing.

Gosh. I didn’t start this thread to be critical, but I have to agree with you - that does sound like quite the look.

This is very trendy now where I am in central London with gen Z - leggings and socks to shin, usually with new balance sneakers and a cropped puffer jacket with hoodie

TastyTakoyaki · 15/02/2025 18:08

Veja trainers or Birkenstocks with chunky socks
bootcut denim jeans, blue or leopard print
oversized hoodie
dry robe
carhart beanie

StElse · 15/02/2025 18:08

Lucy and Yak trousers, leopard print hoodie, bright and battered air max. Hoops.

Not just gen z in my area, a couple a little older with this look; they do stand out more as try hard. They're the same ones that follow every fashion trend regardless of what suits them, personal taste etc. I'm pleased I'm not a gen z as hate the looks, but I bet every generation says that about the one before. Fashion goes around and around anyway.

Up the road in Streatham, slightly different crowd 😂 still pretty middle class but I don't remember everyone having designer bags when my kids were very small or now (my kids are young primary age).

I wouldn't want to take an expensive bag (Mulberry totes are about £800 aren't they?) to a playgroup. Kids could scratch it up / it could get stolen. How do you even wear a tote bag when pushing a buggy? But then again I don't really see the point of £800 handbags. I've had a few expensive handbags in the past but I don't find them practical and they don't stay pristine for long. I don't see people wearing designer bags at work either (professional role/office in the City).

I don’t mind it getting bashed about a bit (I don’t care about bags being pristine), it’s nice and roomy - so practical for all my stuff, and I’ve honestly never worried about having my bag stolen. I also wouldn’t classify it as high end designer or super expensive, tbh. I assume the others with them feel the same. It’s just a nice midrange everyday bag to me.

I work (well, worked - I’m on extended maternity leave) in Canary Wharf, and most women in my office had very nice bags - much posher than Mulberry. I’ve never worked in the City, so it’s interesting to hear that isn’t the case there. I wonder what the differences in women’s clothing in general would be?

DH works in the City and is much more on the casual side of smart casual (think half zips) than the guys at my work.

Couldn’t agree more. I can’t bear dungarees on anyone older than 5.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 18:12

@ForZanyAquaViewer don't you find it heavy for everyday wear though?

Hollietree · 15/02/2025 18:12

Lululemon, Sweaty Betty, AYBL or adanola leggings and jumpers. White socks with On Cloud trainers.

I haven’t seen a pair of Vejas in about 2 years - very outdated here! Nor Mulberry - they were very big here 15 years ago but not in recent times.

Sweaty betty leggings or other gym leggings, white socks and trainers. Long puffer coat.

VaccineSticker · 15/02/2025 18:14

FoolishHips · 15/02/2025 17:11

Actually you are not correct. White socks have always been hideous items. For sports, with white trainers they are just about acceptable but still ick inducing.

White socks pulled up to mid-calf have never ever been acceptable and never will be. I've felt strongly about this matter since the 90's and the fact that the most hideous item of clothing in history has become trendy and I have to see it every single day proves to me that there is no God. I feel that same about white pants and felt the same about white face masks.

I agree with your sentiments. I dislike white socks pulled up mid calf as well, however whether we like it or not they are the current trend. You don’t have to follow them or like them, but they ARE the trends…

We are all impotent against the power of Yaks. They would even make the Princess of Wales look like an overgrown toddler.

@somewhereinsuburbia .what are those leather gnome like shoes?

Probably these https://conkershoes.com/product/buckle-shoe/ if it's anything like where I live, which it sounds like.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 18:12

I haven't worn an over the shoulder bag for a long time now, I find find it is too restrictive, and unnecessary. I am a fan of pockets and backpacks, which you can get smarter versions of too. Times have changed, we all travel a lot lighter now, pay on phones etc. I remember emptying my Mums handbag out as a child, and commenting it was like Mary Poppins!

TENSsion · 15/02/2025 18:20

I’ve been living in knitted dresses, tights and boots this winter.
We’re rural and the popular trend is leggings, dry robe, hoody, wellies and a cap.

EcruCardigan · 15/02/2025 18:21

@Deljay , suddenly I don't need them any more. Grin
I like Handmade Leather Sandals - Conker Shoes - Totnes, Devon, Since 1977 and Leather Lace Up Boots - Handmade by Conker Shoes since 1977

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 18:23

@NotAlwaysasitSeems I do use a shoulder bag but it's fabric. Fashion keeps trying to bring shoulder bags back and I've been tempted by the suede squashy ones in the shops at the moment. But cross body and backpacks are so practical.
