Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Are people still buying Sambas and Gazelles just because everyone else is?

Anyway, I haven’t noticed a winter uniform for our school mums, but for the last few years, the summer uniform has been long floral dresses worn with white trainers.

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

This is a wild guess, but do you live somewhere in suburbia?

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:08

and lots of teen boys do sports shorts and white socks pulled up.

pambeesleyhalpert · 15/02/2025 17:09

SW- sweaty betty leggings, oversized jumper, crew socks and trainers

LittleRedRidingHoody · 15/02/2025 17:09

Early morning school tends to be Ugg Tasmans/NBs, leggings and an oversized hoodie.
After school/weekends is much more wide leg trousers, plain tees, bold cardigans and addidas.

Expensive quirky village in the Home Counties.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:10

@Cattenberg I feel I have to retire mine as they are so ubiquitous but they are a great way of adding colour.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/02/2025 17:10

Where I live I think you must mean the tired ladies in a puffa jacket, with fur lined hood, a ponytail and who look as though they haven't seen a hairdresser for a while. They mainly wear trainers of some sort or boots. They also look very tired.

I'm more inclined to notice the older ladies who wear quite fitted puffa jackets, white soled zippy trainers (Gabor I think) with slim fit narrow jeans and carry a tote of some sort. They have quite well maintained hair and good nails.

ByArtfulBird · 15/02/2025 17:11

I live in Nassington, North Northamptonshire and no there is no mums uniform they all wear different stuff where o used to live they was and every mum wore black and white

They are called trends for a reason. Many people like to follow trends. There is no right or wrong in following them or not.

Actually you are not correct. White socks have always been hideous items. For sports, with white trainers they are just about acceptable but still ick inducing.

White socks pulled up to mid-calf have never ever been acceptable and never will be. I've felt strongly about this matter since the 90's and the fact that the most hideous item of clothing in history has become trendy and I have to see it every single day proves to me that there is no God. I feel that same about white pants and felt the same about white face masks.

Yorkshire.

Vega trainers. Straight leg jeans. Long puffer coats that look like sleeping bags. Uniqlo cross body bag.

Utterly depressing.

This is the London school run uniform too.

I don't wear it. But I think they are all warmer/comfier than me.

Februarystarss · 15/02/2025 17:11

Long puffer gilets..almost everyone has one. I don’t.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:13

I'm a trainer person but they have dominated for years now. I bought some studded ballerinas which i didn't get to eat much last year so I'm looking forward to it warming up.

literally ugly ugly sandals

I’d never heard of Keen sandals either, so googled.

They look like walking sandals. The type of thing some hearty mum would wear while eating a cheese sandwich and shouting “Keep up Lucinda!” while striding across moorland.

Ghastly.

mathanxiety · 15/02/2025 17:14

An example of Keen sandals. They're extremely practical, washable, excellent for beach life, boating, walking the dog, all things outdoorsy. Ugly though.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:14

@FoolishHips I do think Princess Di rocked them with cycling shorts but maybe it was just the fact she has great legs.

@somewhereinsuburbia My money is on either Stoke Newington or Bristol 😆

Veja’s still common in SE London

@somewhereinsuburbia I still think it's Oxford

RubyBee · 15/02/2025 17:17

😂Yes, I think of earth mothers, and those sandles teamed with flowey floral, and a baby sling multi tasking super Mum for some reason, little Henry trailing behind.

Stutterheim/Rains rubberised raincoat.
Or oversized wool/tweed coat from Toast or similar.
Blundstone boots/lace up ankle boots.
Carrot leg jeans, vintage Levi’s, wide leg jeans, cropped wide leg trousers.
Cashmere or wool jumper.
New Yorker or Daunt tote bag.

I reckon you live in East Dulwich

SpeedyMcNobhead · 15/02/2025 17:19

Not going to lie I live in a socially deprived area of Birmingham and whilst I have no idea what everyone else is wearing (my kids are older and I wait in the car for them these days), I am usually in trackies a hoodie and AF1’s.

Im probably a walking fashion disaster but I don’t care 😂

PheasantPluckers · 15/02/2025 17:20

There are a lot of diverse styles here, but I only do the school run a couple of times a week when I'm working from home (and I look like an utter tramp on these days).

I've seen the leggings and white socks look, people in joggers, people dressed smartly on the way to work, people in work unform, straight or barrell cut jeans - anything goes.

Haven't seen anyone in vejas for a few years either.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:21

Lots of the supermarket Anya Hindmarch tote bags my way - I have a few too. They are practical.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 15/02/2025 17:21

Nope. I live in a village in Cumbria and the style is very assorted! I don't even recognise a lot of the descriptions on here from real life Grin

Me neither. My arms would be freezing!

InMyMNEra · 15/02/2025 17:24

And in summer, Birkenstocks - worn with just about everything, but usually wide legged cropped trousers, or dresses
