Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

ive seen so much on social media mocking dryrobes but never seen one in real life

I saw some on parkrun spectators today. One bloke who I know literally looked 4x his actual size….they are not flattering. Me and my mate both agreed we weren’t tempted. I do get they are practical for cold, wet days.

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

I don’t know but the gnome shoes made me laugh.

MrsPeregrine · 15/02/2025 21:54

Woman wears long puffa coat during cold winter months and comfy trainers for the school run. Oh how awful 🙄 Well, I would style it up if I had the financial resources that some of the posters on here do, but I don’t. So I will stick with my unstylish mumsy look. I really couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks anyway.

Surprised there has been no mention of Vivos yet

Thank you, yes I see now. I was imagining some sort of curly toed hobbit boot.

I will now sleep tonight 😝

Barefoot shoes aka gnome shoes

Interesting that OP asked about mum uniform in general, described a toddler group but overwhelming majority exclusively discuss school drop off over any other event they meet parents

Like many others, school drop off clothing depends on where person is going after. Good portion go to gym (myself included on days I drop) so will be wearing gym wear with socks over leggings (you’d be out of place in my gym classes if they weren’t over the top!) and rest are mostly workwear. Pick up time you will very rarely see a parent in gym clothes, either work or usually jeans - still a lot wearing skinny/slim fit with few younger mums wearing wider leg - with jacket/dresses in Summer. For school run, most parents don’t carry handbag and if they do, they’re going to work and it’s a work one for laptop etc.

I can’t say I’ve seen anyone wearing vejas in years.

Really?

I thought they were new.

They just sort of sprung from nowhere all of a sudden.

I assumed they were a supermarket own brand at first. I don't see the appeal.

They do actually look like they could be worn in the 'shire! They look comfy to be fair.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 15/02/2025 22:03

Those New Balance trainers where the sole extends up the back - I see that a lot.

I think maybe those of us who see them as dated wore them first time round (about 7-10 years ago). I initially said about 5 years but thinking on it it was longer than that. I actually threw a pair away recently.

We're probably just old!

I think people are just responding about the ‘mum stage’ they’re at. I only have a toddler, so not at school drop off stage. I assume that the uniform will be less uniform at that stage, but who knows? I’ll probably be working again, so will probably be dressed very differently myself.

I’m really enjoying this thread.

I live in Manhattan. The school run is an absolute bloody fashion show every day. Although right now, everyone is wearing some variation of stompy snow boots and a giant coat because the weather is bloody awful.

Of course, paired with diamonds and violently expensive handbags.

Flopsy145 · 15/02/2025 22:27

GutsyGertrude · 15/02/2025 14:46

Actually no! I see little cliques wearing similar things. There are two mums who are friends and always wear athleisure for example. There are some others who all wear long puffy coats, jeans and Adidas gazelles or sambas. But in general there is a big variety.

I'm in East Berks.

Same as me in Oxfordshire.

Although a new group is emerging wearing dry robes and I'm not keen, they are not stepping out of a lake and running straight to the school run they're all in jeans and trainers and then massive bloody dry robes. Looks ridiculous but guess they're comfy.
As I'm on mat leave I'm in the athleisure club at the moment but will move to casual office wear when I'm back at work

I wish converse would die out, a novelty at first revived from the 80s. The look is getting old now, and doesn't suit anybody over the age of about 20.

Literally revived about 15 years ago too!

I've been wearing them for about 30 years. Had no idea they were ever in or out of fashion. I don't pay for the real.ones, I buy the cheap lookalike ones from Deichman.

CalliopePlantain · 15/02/2025 22:45

Wellies and a Barbour jacket

florasl · 15/02/2025 22:46

@godddwhathaveyoudone I am a millennial and have recently sold all my 00s Abercrombie, Jack Wills, Hollister, Juicy etc… that was in my parents attic for loads of Vinted. £25 for a ‘y2k vintage Jack Wills’ micro mini skirt, £60 for a Guess Handbag!

Happyearlyretirement · 15/02/2025 22:53

Semi rural, dryrobes, gym gear or work wear. The only thing I grit my teeth at are the wicker basket mums. I only do the school run to help my niece out and really nothings changes since my days.

Fizzygoo · 15/02/2025 22:53

It’s been a while but my uniform was

wellies/ with tucked in jeans
mohair jumper with waxed jacket or without

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 15/02/2025 22:55

I’m in Scotland. I only do school pick up once a week, but it’s a real mix and I’ve yet to see a trend. About half the pick ups are done by dads or older siblings. Dads seem to wear Jeans, t shirts and trainers and a jacket. For mums. A mix of modest clothing/hijab, some mums in leggings, hair up, puffed lips, something done to eyebrows, and some mums in work clothes or jeans

Lots of black knee length or longer puffer coats , leggings , chunky ankle boots , trainers .
I am a bit different in a green coat , above knee casual dress with a warm cardigan plus tights and knee length boots

Proudestmumofone1 · 15/02/2025 23:06

North west london / slightly outside of NW london suburbs -
eg Hampstead, Mill Hill, Radlett…

lululemon or adanola leggings.
oversized sweatshirt, aninne bing or adanola
sports socks eg thicker ankle length.
mini uggs, sambas specials or Chanel/ loewe trainers.

always a ‘designer’ bag not just high street - Chanel plus non-branded tote for ‘kid or baby’ stuff. Or loewe bag.

oh and a lot of baseball caps - always branded / designer. Typically Celine.

age group - I’m later 30s toddler mum, but would say this is consistently the look for 30 - 42 ish year olds.

god I need to change my wardrobe after writing this… can’t believe I’m a sheep in a pathetic tribe!!! 😳🤣
