Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

I’m about 73829 months pregnant so wear leggings (with pulled up socks), a massive sweater, quilted coat, scarf and cashmere beanie, stompy sort of wellies. EVERY SINGLE DAY. But there isn’t much that’s currently comfy, fits and is practical for doing an hour long round trip nursery run for two. Either WFH in same outfit, minus coat and boots, or get changed at work. I’m sick of the sight of my own bloody uniform.

Other mums are occasionally also in leggings/hoodies but mostly in workwear and a long wool coat with very nicely done hair and make up.

padsi1975 · 15/02/2025 23:08

White socks over trainers been around here for awhile, spotted first on the trendy young Mums. Noticed the high school girls ALL wearing white socks over their black tights the other day so the trendy Mums might ditch the look now. Haven't tried it myself but it does seem very practical.

Mix if Sweaty Betty and Hush:

Leggings, sweatshirt, maggot coat.

Jeans, oversize jumper, boots, wool trench.

Long skirt or dress, jumper or cardigan, boots or trainers, maggot coat.

I've never heard of veja trainers!

By mum uniform do you mean mums of babies and toddlers or just any mums? I see many in dungarees although that is going out, lots of jeans and hoodies and trainers

Proudestmumofone1 · 15/02/2025 23:36

Gosh this is funny to read - honestly veja trainers, converse, dungarees etc haven’t been seen around here for 8 plus years!

to the point I sold all my old veja trainers (circa £120 new) recently for about a fiver on Vinted! 🤣

Whereabouts are you and what do people currently wear?

I was thinking about mums of babies/toddlers (as that’s what I am), but it’s been interesting reading about people at other stages.

Interesting that OP asked about mum uniform in general, described a toddler group but overwhelming majority exclusively discuss school drop off over any other event they meet parents

Like many others, school drop off clothing depends on where person is going after. Good portion go to gym (myself included on days I drop) so will be wearing gym wear with socks over leggings (you’d be out of place in my gym classes if they weren’t over the top!) and rest are mostly workwear. Pick up time you will very rarely see a parent in gym clothes, either work or usually jeans - still a lot wearing skinny/slim fit with few younger mums wearing wider leg - with jacket/dresses in Summer. For school run, most parents don’t carry handbag and if they do, they’re going to work and it’s a work one for laptop etc.

I'll be the odd one out than, as won't be doing socks over leggings. Trainer socks for me all of the way.

Just thinking about people saying that the mum uniform is a bit depressing… Mine was Breton top, skinny jeans, Converse. I hate the big long puffy coats. And Sweaty Betty leggings.

But even more depressing, was the teen uniform I witnessed today. Six young girls on the bus, all wearing… First of all a full body layer of tan. Then a monochrome uniform of black micro mini / hot pants, cropped black puffy jacket, black & white Adidas. All quite literally the same outfit. I red recently that it’s online influence. They were like clones. Like a pack of Zebra!

DevilledEgg · 15/02/2025 23:50

Large NE village....

We've got chav mams
We've got goth/alternative mams
We've got gym bunny/runner mam's
And we've got chunky mam's
We've got preened, cosmetics/filler mam's
We've got addict mam's
We've got hippy mams

Out you can think of really

We don't seem to have an overall uniform though. Just lots of clicks

pinkhousesarebest · 15/02/2025 23:51

Lots of adidas sambas/ spéciale but also vejas. Big three quarter length puff as ( south eastern France and it’s freezing) with the occasional Jott on warmer days / or a nice, oversized blazer.Sunglasses. Nice, swingy hair.

Allihavetodoisdream · 15/02/2025 19:16

Never seen this, but am in north london…

Same 😁

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 15/02/2025 23:55

In terms of what I wear - wide or barrel jeans, Adidas gazelles, colourful knit, Uniqlo moon bag in corduroy or bag with a print, I do have a long puffer coat for park / school run. Longchamp bag or adidas backpack.

Wouldn’t say I’m typical in my area but amongst my friends from all over London I am.

I am into looking a bit current with my jeans but not a slave to trends, I’ve always worn adidas and glad Vejas are now out of fashion, never liked them!

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Bristol? (Haven’t read the whole thread, sorry!!)

godddwhathaveyoudone · 16/02/2025 00:33

I haven’t heard of a lot of the brands being mentioned! Feeling really out of touch 😩

Proudestmumofone1 · 15/02/2025 23:06

North west london / slightly outside of NW london suburbs -
eg Hampstead, Mill Hill, Radlett…

lululemon or adanola leggings.
oversized sweatshirt, aninne bing or adanola
sports socks eg thicker ankle length.
mini uggs, sambas specials or Chanel/ loewe trainers.

always a ‘designer’ bag not just high street - Chanel plus non-branded tote for ‘kid or baby’ stuff. Or loewe bag.

oh and a lot of baseball caps - always branded / designer. Typically Celine.

age group - I’m later 30s toddler mum, but would say this is consistently the look for 30 - 42 ish year olds.

god I need to change my wardrobe after writing this… can’t believe I’m a sheep in a pathetic tribe!!! 😳🤣

Edited

@ForZanyAquaViewer this was my first post, followed up with no veja trainers around here for 8 + years!

Yep, fashion seems so much more homogeneous but then look at the high street compared to the 90s when there were far more brands & they tended to have their own handwriting. I remember as a teen getting pissed at my friend for buying the same trainers in a different colour way 😆

never heard of veja! around here it was mallet trainers around your time line , think it's shoe uggs and new balance now (don't get out the car for school run and park off the road as I don't associate with anyone 😑 😂)

Fully don't get the socks issue, they're just socks, people 🤷‍♀️

And so much comfier than bloody trainer socks.

Those New Balance trainers where the sole extends up the back - I see that a lot.

I’d say they’re two years out of date. I work at a university, none of my students wear those anymore. They’re all wearing new balance 530 or Nike or adidas.

Oxford?

I was going to say Cambridge...

MotorwayDiva · 16/02/2025 07:01

Non uniform here, mix of work clothes or jeans/leggings and warm coat.

HelloDaisy · 16/02/2025 07:14

GutsyGertrude · 15/02/2025 14:46

Actually no! I see little cliques wearing similar things. There are two mums who are friends and always wear athleisure for example. There are some others who all wear long puffy coats, jeans and Adidas gazelles or sambas. But in general there is a big variety.

I'm in East Berks.

I’m in Berkshire and totally agree with you!

DustyLee123 · 16/02/2025 07:32

Long black puffer coat, so then you just see the Ugg boots. And a poodle mix dog.
