Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Thankfully not. My eccentric little Welsh seaside town has everything and then some...

I’m not sure if we really have a look around here! Or maybe it’s just that I don’t see many mums anymore now that DC is of an age to just get booted out of the car at the school gate instead of parents having to come into school.

But I’ve enjoyed reading everyone else’s. The athleisure look went out years ago here, and the white crew socks/White Fox hoodie is definitely teenagers only, not the parents!

White fox and white socks isn’t really the athleisure wear of choice where I am. Definitely for kids! It’s more alo and lululemon. Younger mums / older teens in adanola.

cunoyerjudowel · 15/02/2025 21:02

Adanola uniform up here

12345mummy · 15/02/2025 21:07

A mix here of sports leggings, skinny jeans and boots. Lots of long puffa jackets. Some walking wear. We are in the country.

I think the Mum uniform everywhere is geared around:
comfy
warm
arse doesn’t hang out when bending over
ditto boobs

Ive never felt so boring however, when I try and mix it up and one of the above is not fulfilled, I instantly regret it 😆

There’s a lot of semi transparent leggings with white socks and knock-off crocs round this way. Nightwear also seems to be acceptable. There are at least 2 mums that I have never seen wearing clothes, only pyjamas and dressing gowns!

They are living my dream

TipsyBlueOtter · 15/02/2025 21:16

I live opposite school so I like to get dressed properly only AFTER my school run, so sorry if anyone is squinting at me trying to work out what tribe I'm in. I'm wearing a cashmere sweater but it's got hay on it. You can't prove they're pyjama bottoms.

Stuff I see quite a lot is Hokas, the sensible end of Patagonia, barrel leg jeans, chunky print cardigans.

Saggyknickers · 15/02/2025 21:19

Im Surprised at veja trainers still being popular in London, they're really passé where I live (northwest). Everyone wore them about 3-5 years ago but don't see any now. Mulberry bags are over too and I'd say only older people maybe carry them. In fact the mulberry concession in our local department store has massively downsized. I see lots of Gucci/Prada round here (it is a very wealthy area though).

Near me it's Anine Bing sweaters, sweaty Betty/lulu lemon stuff, big puffa coats and pushing a bugaboo. Younger mums seem to like the beige leisurewear trend! Everything very beige and black and dull and oversized.

Im still in my skinny jeans and Dubarrys, never stopped wearing them but apparently they're back in now 😂

BitOutOfPractice · 15/02/2025 21:22

I resisted the long socks with leggings and runners for yonks. But omg it’s so cosy compared to trainer socks. I’m 57.

Im sorry if that offends people who think we should only stick to our Gen lane but I promise on only wear them to go to the gym (I walk and it’s cold)

godddwhathaveyoudone · 15/02/2025 21:25

ive seen so much on social media mocking dryrobes but never seen one in real life

Grammarnut · 15/02/2025 21:25

ForZanyAquaViewer · 15/02/2025 14:52

This is nice. I think I need to introduce some variety to my everyday wardrobe, but I honestly wouldn’t know where to start!

Wear a skirt and jumper with black tights and court shoes (pearls optional). That should startle them.

somewhereinsuburbia · 15/02/2025 21:26

Not Brighton, Cambridge or Edinburgh. Bristol. There is quite a look. I love being alternative by wearing a Primark black coat and knock off uggs.

I can’t say I’ve seen anyone wearing vejas in years.

This

FatAgain · 15/02/2025 14:50

just reading this is so depressing.

im gonna sex it up bigly after half term 🤣

🤣👏👏👏

Fifiworks · 15/02/2025 21:34

Vejas are old hat - it’s gazelles, with straight leg jeans and a quilted (not puffed) long jacket.

otherwise it’s leggings with 4th arc fleece.

haven’t been paying attention to the bags.

Thulpelly · 15/02/2025 15:09

Dryrobes.

Lots of these at my kids sports club!

Saggyknickers · 15/02/2025 21:35

somewhereinsuburbia · 15/02/2025 14:58

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Cambridge?

Scorchio84 · 15/02/2025 21:35

Here in Dublin it's mostly sports/leisure wear/leggings or joggers.. it's been a while since I've seen anyone in pyjamas at the school gate though in fairness, our school board sent out a polite (I suppose) text to discourage them 😆Yeah the big puffy coats here too that I'm sure cost a fortune.. some of the kids come in after Christmas in Canada Goose & they're not fake

Mine will always be skinny ripped jeans, I look ridiculous in any other styles, hoodies, breton tops etc for school & short Uggs & Adidas Sambas or Gazelles, probably exceptionally dated but there you have it oh & I also wear joggers & leisure stuff for lazing around in

LovelySunnyDayToday · 15/02/2025 21:36

DappledThings · 15/02/2025 15:19

Don't think so. Not noticed any but I don't take much notice of what other people are wearing and I've never heard of Vejas so if everyone is wearing them I wouldn't know.

Just jeans and jumpers really. Ordinary clothes.

Vejas were popular about 10 years ago!

WombatChocolate · 15/02/2025 21:37

So it’s Bristol for the gnome shoes? Is that specifically Clifton?

Lollipoplol97 · 15/02/2025 21:39

Coventry 🤣

Please please post a pic of the "gnome shoes". I need to know what you mean or I won't be able to sleep tonight.

Hanban1987 · 15/02/2025 21:43

Bloody hell, only read one page and I really need to change my look! Day to day I wear straight leg jeans, black tee/jumper, slightly battered vejas and a knee length black puffer.
I live in East Yorkshire and the general school run mum is in ath leisure, white socks, chunky trainers and a short puffer. Maybe I don’t belong around here haha.

MumTeacherofMany · 15/02/2025 21:48

Long black puffer, leggings, white nike socks and new balance trainers or uggs in Milton Keynes

I think it was the shapeless flat, soft leather (or presumably vegan ‘leather’) shoes a pp linked to upthread. The sort of shoe you’d expect to see mummies wearing when they take the children to Woodcraft Folk.

I don’t know for sure that this is what she was referring to, but presumably similar.
