Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Had to look up golden goose as didn't have a clue what it is 😂 Could just buy a cheap pair, and bash them a round a bit. Oh now I'm starting to sound like dm, when she made her annoying scissors comment, alluding to the ripped jeans I would buy in the early 2000s.

I remember having jeans that were more rip than denim. My parents were extremely unimpressed and quite vocal about it. 🤣

I love my golden goose although they aren't that fashionable anymore. They have a built in instep lift so for someone with a high instep they are super comfortable. They were cheaper when i bought them though.

Where I live in south of ireland the mams round here pick their kids up wearing pj's now that's depressing that they couldn't be bothered to get dressed for the school run

I thought you were wimbledon! I'm just down the road and recognised the uniform. I hadn't heard of Vejas, but when I googled them I realised that I see them everywhere

I love that a few people read the OP and thought ‘yes, this woman is in Wimbledon’. 🤣

Still waiting for @somewhereinsuburbia to tell us if any of us guessed correctly. My money is still on Edinburgh.

Have they not got dressed all day?

Have they not got dressed all day?

I think it's too much of an effort for them

LT1233 · 15/02/2025 20:19

Head to toe gym gear, puffer jackets and either short uggs or trainers. Don't think I've seen a pair of jeans or anything other than leggings for about 20 years. I also dress like this tbf. North Manchester

Yes if someone was wearing Vejas I would automatically put them at mid to late 40s, but those trainers haven’t been in fashion for a while now where I am (North London). Maybe it’s a North/South divide indicator!

Around here at 42 you’d be a young mum with a Yr6 child! Most have a toddler at that age or pregnant with their first!!

I need to move to North London then! I was about average aged with my eldest who is now 18 but there were quite a few mums who had started at 17-19. In my youngest's class there are a some mums my age but we all have much older dc too. There are quite a few still in their 20's and the rest are all somewhere in between.

babiesinthesnowflakes · 15/02/2025 20:29

I haven’t seen many vejas recently, I thought they were the fashion ~5 years ago.

Around here, a commuter town near London, it’s something like:

30% athleisure (usually with socks over leggings, which just looks normal to me now)
30% wide leg jeans and jumpers/cardigans
20% dresses, tights and boots
20% mixed bag of comfy clothes e.g. skinny jeans and uggs, tracksuit bottoms, pyjama type trousers

ShinyPebble32 · 15/02/2025 20:29

Very interesting thread! I now live in a village with a fairly unique feature that attracts a lot of ‘incomers’, so there’s quite a mix. You have the standard new balance/straight leg jean crew and some rural horsey types, but also the odd very high-end fashionista, some in full sportswear and quite a lot in uniforms associated with said unique feature. Drive a mile to the next village over, and it’s 100% horsey types in dubarry boots etc.
It really does vary so much from area to area, where I moved from was wall to wall long puffa coat, microbladed brows and lip filler vibes - but I’m in a minority here even with a watered down version of that look!

Nope. I live in a village in Cumbria and the style is very assorted! I don't even recognise a lot of the descriptions on here from real life Grin

I also live in a village in rural Cumbria. I recognise the leggings and white socks but otherwise it's all a mystery.

Goodness! I’m 42 and my youngest is 18.. I’m pretty sure there are plenty of grandmothers my age where I live (although I’m guessing it’s a very different demographic).
I wouldn’t wear veja’s (too much of a middle class / mumsy vibe) but I have stolen gen z’s Nike ankle socks over leggings when I’m dressing down.. I’m all about the warm ankles 😂

Do! It’s great here (apart from the crazy house prices!). I don’t know anyone who had their first baby who wasn’t over 37! My child’s friend’s mum is having her second at 45 (well she will be 46 by the time they’re born). It’s very common here.

RaveToTheGrave1 · 15/02/2025 20:38

Lip fillers, blonde hair or very black hair, leggings, those weird looking sock sneakers and some sort of beige jumper top

MattDillonsEyebrows · 15/02/2025 20:42

😂 This reminds me of a 50th I went to last year. All totally lovely people but literally all the women were wearing floaty dresses, little denim jackets and white trainers, mostly superga. All various colours and styles but there was definitely a ‘look’!
I did actually go wearing a denim jacket (not a floaty dress as I’m too gauche to carry it off) but when I saw the uniform, I felt so uncomfortable that I took it off! 😂

theotherplace · 15/02/2025 20:44

Yes.

Leggings, uggs, some sort of fleecy thing that could double as a nightgown. HATE it with a passion

NoWayRose · 15/02/2025 20:44

We haven’t had Vejas for a good years now - it’s all NB and long puffas.

Lilactimes · 15/02/2025 20:45

cheezncrackers · 15/02/2025 14:59

Well, it's February and it's cold, so it's not that surprising to see lots of people in puffa coats! Round where I live though, I would say that no, there isn't a uniform. Lots of athleisure wear, lots of smartish jeans/trousers, lots of nice coats of various types, but at this time of year yes, a lot are puffa style, lots of smart trainers, but not specifically any one brand, same with leather bags.

Sounds the same as where I live in n London x

Melancholyflower · 15/02/2025 20:46

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:00

well you think they look naff where's I wouldn't even think anything but we all have different tastes.

I'd never take style notes from people who use the word naff!😂

Switcher · 15/02/2025 20:48

Most mothers where I live are trying to look as unglamorous as possible, apart from the eastern European ones, whom I can't help admiring. I mean...full make-up, kids with gorgeous neat hairstyles, perfect casual but neat wardrobe. I on the other hand, on the rare occasion I actually drop the kids off, wear some unfashionable skinny jeans and exactly the same bloody salt rock hoody I wear on every zoom call, every holiday snap, every single record of me.

Jk987 · 15/02/2025 20:51

I'm in full make up and a smart top because I have to dash home for Teams calls. I wouldn't wear Vegas because they're aging. I'm not young but don't want to look older!

ShinyPebble32 · 15/02/2025 20:52

StElse · 15/02/2025 18:08

Lucy and Yak trousers, leopard print hoodie, bright and battered air max. Hoops.

Got to be Bristol!

This has been a look for at least two years where I live but it's only teens and early twenties who do it. You wouldn't see anyone over 23 looking like that.

I think it was millennials for a few years but Gen X are slowly but inexorably coming round to it as our ‘eye’ adjusts to the look.

Just wait… soon you’ll start thinking hidden trainer socks now feel a bit dated and y’know, sport socks do keep your ankles so warm… 😁

TappyGilmore · 15/02/2025 20:55

I’m not sure if we really have a look around here! Or maybe it’s just that I don’t see many mums anymore now that DC is of an age to just get booted out of the car at the school gate instead of parents having to come into school.

But I’ve enjoyed reading everyone else’s. The athleisure look went out years ago here, and the white crew socks/White Fox hoodie is definitely teenagers only, not the parents!

PurpleChrayn · 15/02/2025 20:56

Camel toes and duck lips round our way.
