Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

This isn’t something I would admit in real life, but I don’t wear anything particularly nice/expensive looking on the school run because it’s a mixed economic area and it wouldn’t feel right.

couldabutdidnt · 15/02/2025 19:17

<waves to @SulkySeagull> vega wearing mum right here!

I’ve been wearing mine 6 years now and they still look alright! Not remotely cool admittedly but I’m a mum of two preschoolers. There’s fuck all cool about me left and I don’t even pretend otherwise!

An £800 bag is not super expensive? Sometimes I worry that I'm out of touch 😂 £800 is objectively a lot for a handbag.

It might ‘objectively’ be a lot, but it isn't to me. Which is what I said.

@somewhereinsuburbia .what are those leather gnome like shoes?

Conker shoes, or maybe Chuckles.

This is interesting. What would you classify as an older/younger mum?

Well obviously you’re only as old as you feel but generally below 35, over 35? I’m in between 35-40, and still in my athleisure wear 😅

Honestly, everyone looks so different on the school run! Some in work attire, some jeans and jumpers, some in tracksuits, the odd one in pajamas Blush

I'm usually in some kind of matching gym/loungewear set or similar comfy clothes

mummysmagicmedicine · 15/02/2025 19:34

dry robes!

By that definition, I am and mostly know older mums, so our Veja love makes perfect sense. 😆 Most of us didn’t start having kids until our mid-thirties.

I’m the same age as you and feel about 100. Toddler mama life is very ageing! 🤣

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Brighton?

troppibambini6 · 15/02/2025 18:59

Basically this. Have people really not seen this kind of thing?
Sports leggings have been around for ages. Usually worn either with Axel Arrigato or NB trainers.

I will hold my hands up I'm a sheep and this is usually what I wear. Although usually with a long black puffa if the weather is bad.

I'm in south Manchester. In prime wag/ yummy mummy territory.

Hale?

Ah yes my eldest is in secondary and my youngest in year 2 so I always feel like a “young mum” even though I’m actually getting into the older demographic now 😊

troppibambini6 · 15/02/2025 19:40

@Blondiney next door Wink

Ceebeegee · 15/02/2025 19:41

Black leggings, trainers or uggs, and a black sleevless knee length puffer jacket. With a frenchie or sausage dog.

elliejjtiny · 15/02/2025 19:43

I'm in Somerset and everyone wears different clothes here. Lots of mums are carers and retail workers working shifts though so there are quite a few in their work uniforms. The stay at home mums and dads wear all different things, although most people are wearing thick coats at the moment as it's really cold.

Same, I’m from Cambridge

I don't know about anyone else but I wouldn't notice how expensive/nice your clothes are on the school run.

Really surprised Veja is still so popular. At our school all the posh mums are Golden Goose.

I hate those so much. The fake distressed look. Ugh.

Just realised I am probably one of the oldest mum's on the school run now. My youngest is in year 6 now and most of the children in his year come and go by themselves now. I'm 42. There is one lady who is 46 with her youngest in year one and another lady who is 50 with children in upper KS2. Then a couple who are my age. I found out the other day that my son's friend's mum was born when I was doing my gcse's, that made me feel ancient.

NotAlwaysasitSeems · 15/02/2025 19:55

Had to look up golden goose as didn't have a clue what it is 😂 Could just buy a cheap pair, and bash them a round a bit. Oh now I'm starting to sound like dm, when she made her annoying scissors comment, alluding to the ripped jeans I would buy in the early 2000s.

Blondiney · 15/02/2025 20:01

@troppibambini6

Waves😁

TaggieO · 15/02/2025 20:05

Vejas have definitely been and gone round here.

Lots of Lucy and yak dungarees, or baggy jeans with ugly vintage jumpers. Lots of Passenger. Vans. Obligatory dry robes.

Emptyandsad · 15/02/2025 20:05

ForZanyAquaViewer · 15/02/2025 15:25

Mulberry bags everywhere. It appears to be the standard everyday bag. I’m in Wimbledon, whereabouts are you?

I thought you were wimbledon! I'm just down the road and recognised the uniform. I hadn't heard of Vejas, but when I googled them I realised that I see them everywhere

pinkstripeycat · 15/02/2025 20:06

South wales coast: converse boots or pumps (I’ve been wearing the same boots since I was 15 and I’m now 52! Goodness knows how they don’t have holes!) cropped ankle jeans, white t-shirt, long messy hair. In winter, a thick hooded cardy and short ankle wellies for beach walks. We’ve been wearing the same since the 80s. Stuck in a time warp 😂

Yes if someone was wearing Vejas I would automatically put them at mid to late 40s, but those trainers haven’t been in fashion for a while now where I am (North London). Maybe it’s a North/South divide indicator!

Around here at 42 you’d be a young mum with a Yr6 child! Most have a toddler at that age or pregnant with their first!!
