Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Big long black puffa jackets, phone in hand, leggings with white socks up to the calves, chunky trainers, obligatory ponytail.

User3523526 · 15/02/2025 18:57

Really surprised Veja is still so popular. At our school all the posh mums are Golden Goose.

troppibambini6 · 15/02/2025 18:59

Basically this. Have people really not seen this kind of thing?
Sports leggings have been around for ages. Usually worn either with Axel Arrigato or NB trainers.

I will hold my hands up I'm a sheep and this is usually what I wear. Although usually with a long black puffa if the weather is bad.

I'm in south Manchester. In prime wag/ yummy mummy territory.

Sorry that should have sports leggings and socks have been around for ages.

Just can't see past those socks? Spoils entire outfit. The trainers and the blazer too.

Oh believe me, I can spot a millennial in gen z clothing a mile off, and it isn't a good look. I'm not a fan of it on any age group though. What is it with those suede track suits with "juicy" written on the bottoms as well?😂
I'm pleased I'm not a gen z-er! The no socks look on the young men as well and short tight pants! Dh tried a pair of skinny jeans on for a laugh, and couldn't get them over his thighs.

Edited

Aren’t the juicy bum velour bottoms OG millennial though? I associate them with early 2000s Paris Hilton/playboy bunny aesthetic that was popular, I’m sure lots of celebrities wore them.

Think it’s def an age thing. Only older mums wear vejas.

Younger mums round here really only dress in athleisure wear and why not? So comfy and easy to style.

Also, white socks / longer socks with trainers are elite in the winter. Who wants cold ankles!?

Edited

This is interesting. What would you classify as an older/younger mum?

I don’t mind it getting bashed about a bit (I don’t care about bags being pristine), it’s nice and roomy - so practical for all my stuff, and I’ve honestly never worried about having my bag stolen. I also wouldn’t classify it as high end designer or super expensive, tbh. I assume the others with them feel the same. It’s just a nice midrange everyday bag to me.

I work (well, worked - I’m on extended maternity leave) in Canary Wharf, and most women in my office had very nice bags - much posher than Mulberry. I’ve never worked in the City, so it’s interesting to hear that isn’t the case there. I wonder what the differences in women’s clothing in general would be?

DH works in the City and is much more on the casual side of smart casual (think half zips) than the guys at my work.

An £800 bag is not super expensive? Sometimes I worry that I'm out of touch 😂 £800 is objectively a lot for a handbag.

Yes, everyone's wearing that where I live (Yorkshire)

godddwhathaveyoudone · 15/02/2025 19:05

I have only seen Vejas on the 40+ women. Quite a few people wear them. I like them but have heard they’re not comfy.

Still afew going strong in dc's school, but they are becoming less, since the horrible gym socks look has appeared.

Fully don't get the socks issue, they're just socks, people 🤷‍♀️

They are back than because I've seen numerous gen z-ers in them. I think it is the juicy part on the bum I hate the most.

EcruCardigan · 15/02/2025 19:07

@LochKatrine ,she was a role model and an inspiration.
She was also average height and from what I understand was careful to maintain a steady and healthy weight.

The first poster described white sports socks pulled up to people’s shins, though. I haven’t seen that. What’s in the photos are just people wearing socks (of normal length) and leggings, which I wouldn’t even notice.

Right now, black leggings or co-ords with Uggs or trainers and long puffer coats

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Totnes?

MyPantsAreMissing · 15/02/2025 19:11

My children are in a Steiner school. Individuality is the uniform . Lots of natural fabrics and pre-loved clothing. Definitely takes the pressure off for parents and children.

SulkySeagull · 15/02/2025 19:12

Vegas?! Sambas surely? No one wears Vegas anymore

Technically that’s Gen-Z in millennial wear then 😅 I was horrified to see those circle leather belts (the ones everyone wore with gypsy skirts in 2005) and von Dutch t-shirts in urban outfitters. I know fashion cycles round but it’s not been THAT long surely??

Dryrobe / long puffer coat, leggings, white sport socks, Ugg Tazz OR cuffed straight jeans, bright coloured trainers (probably Samba or Gazelles), oversized shirt / sweatshirt.

SmokeRingsOfMyMind · 15/02/2025 19:15

Those godawful wide leg leopard print jeans, also those weird gilets with ribbon ties. Ganni and Damson Madder have a lot to answer for.

Nottodaty · 15/02/2025 19:16

I work in a south east London office - our call centre staff really mix but a lot of the younger staff (18+) a lot wearing the vejas. I did go to look at some and both my daughters said no!

I don’t do the drop off any more but driving past seems to be a mix of dry robe coats with uggs and long socks, and new balance trainers, jeans and the long padded coat and the gym look - with the on cloud trainers. Odd person in hoodie - white fox/adonla look.

I think it is because they remind me of this image. 😂 I also disliked the slouch sock over leggings look in the 90s, which I was part of briefly as well (thanks dm)! Don't like the bright white tennis sock black leggings look either, tucked in pr otherwise.
I obviously have a sock phobia clearly!
